Tutorial: How I Hollow A Wooden Vessel Using A Twca Cam
Ойын-сауық
Here is a free video explaining in depth how I hollow wood to create specific vessels using a Twca Cam Tool.
The Twca Cam is a heritage tool that stems from clog making and spoon carving. I have adapted a technique to efficiently use the tool to remove material and create the undercut convex howl forms that I make. There are many other makers using this tool to create wooden vessels, but I thought it good practice to break down my techniques into a step by step guide to help push the craft further.
I really enjoy this process as it allows me to use a lot of my body and mind to create shapes that I find natural, organic and inspiring. I hope that with this video, I can inspire more makers to carve in this way and move further into the future of the hollowed vessel.
The tool I use is forged by Nic Westermann and the adze by Josh Burrell.
The wood I used was birch, I find birch to be extremely forgiving as a material and reliable when making these forms and less prone to splitting or cracking.
I wish to express that this isn't a guide of what you should do, but more a guide into how I hollow. The best way to learn is with a tutor in person, and if you do feel inspired, I recommend taking a step into a learning environment to craft with a tutor so that they can observe your technique.
I am very new to this style of video, Although I have been teaching for many years, I find teaching in person, much easier! I would love feedback and the opportunity to answer any questions.
Lastly, enjoy your making! Make time for it, make slowly, purposely and leave many things behind.

I don’t remember happen chancing upon whatever video made me subscribe to your channel, this feels like the first time I’ve seen you. But I’m glad I did, great video man, very informative, relaxing to watch, fantastic minimalist but insightful commentary - you’re a natural teacher. Looking forward to seeing you tackle the outside. How do you sharpen those tools?
Beautiful. I would like to know where did you buy the carving tools?
Perfect video tutorial, many thanks for creating it Samuel. I am going to watch it and watch it to learn as much as possible. I like your work! Keep it up! So far I have made a couple of spoons and three small wooden cups, but I would like to learn and have the experience to carve a kuksa cup. Greetings from Slovakia, Slavo.

To sharpen I wrap some we and dry abrasive around a dowel and brush the inside.. then I strop a little for the outside. Thank you for your feedback! ❤
