Tutorial: Forward Crossovers on inline skates; How to make them smooth and safe even at high speeds.

Спорт

This video tutorial aims to fix one of the most common problems that Asha sees when people try forward crossovers. She identifies the problem and gives a training exercise to help you fix this issue.
Apologies for the slight nausea creating, fast moving background of this video.
Forward crossovers are more complex and challenging than they look and Asha's full tutorial class on this skill (available in the "How to Skate - Intermediate" online course is almost 15 minutes long. This is not a skill that should be summarised. Test that course for free (see links below).
Many skaters try forward crossovers before they have the necessary pre-requisite skills to do so safely. These include;
Conscious edge control and ability to glide on both inside and outside edges in curves on 1 leg.
Scooting in a circle is a good way to train the new outside edge.
Parallel turns in both directions
Confident Toe Rolls in straight lines and on inside & outside edges (both legs).
Your success with crossovers will increase hugely if you work on those pre-requisite skills first.
Let us know in the comments if you were making this mistake and how the corrective exercise felt when you tried it.

    Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. Right! Exactly! It's something people who learn by themselves without any instruction don't realize at all. But if you watch speed competitors and ice figure skaters you will see it's very noticeable indeed. The knees being bent has a lot to do with this under push. With straight legs this under push is non-existent, simply because you don't have the strength that the flexion gives, and the support leg (front) is never stable enough to bear your weight.

    Nice - I'll give this a try when I get back outside on skates. In common with a lot of people, I think, I can do crossovers fairly well one way (anticlockwise) but I'm ropey the other side (clockwise)! I can do them clockwise practising in a car park but lack the confidence and stability to throw them in when I'm out skating. This exercise on my weak side might help, so thanks 👍🙂👍

  • @SkatefreshVideos

    Glad it was helpful! Yes, all my videos and exercises can be skated by inlines or quaddies. The toe roll position on inlines is replaced on quads by a one legged glide with the back leg bent as if the front wheels are on the ground but they're just hovering in the air, front knee bent properly of course. Pretty much all other positions translate well. SO in this crossover exercise you crossover onto a 2-3 m one leg glide. I should do a. video of this on quads....

    The Toe roll on inline skates is replaced on quads by a one footed glide but in the same position (front knee super bent, back knee touching front shin and back foot toe close to the ground but not touching. You practice crossing over and then gliding in that position for a few metres and repeat. You'll know if you're really balanced or not depending on that front knee bend. If you can roll then you're balanced. Try it out.

    This is extremely common and gives you very useful DATA. You are skating very heavily one sided which is normal but it will only get worse and more pronounced if you don't consciously start training new exercises on the weaker side/leg. Just the scooting in a circle will be super challenging the you first start it and Id get comfy with that before even thinking about crossing over. There's probably many earlier skills you missed on your weaker side so going back to some advanced beginner basics could be useful for you to gain additional strength and control on the other side. I can recommend an online course from my range that will totally help you even up and gain those base skills (choose either beginner to revise or intermediate to push yourself). If you went though all the beginner skills on both sides it would be a great foundation building process and then the harder skills like crossovers become doable. Try the Int free trial to have a go for free. skatefresh.com/product/how-to-skate-intermediate-level-full-course/

    Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. The skate you choose actually depends on your feet, and what you want to do. In general any inline skate is designed to be used on a road/parking lot/outdoors, but the fitness type or the freeskate/freestyle type are better for that. The Next line by Powerslide seems to be fine for a lot of skaters no matter size/shape and they are very strong, but as I say your feet decide. Certain brands/models are great for some skaters but for others they are not suitable at all and feel terrible, and this is because each person is different. The same happens with wheel diameter/hardness, it's a personal choice. Asha rides several different skates. In this video her skates are the Powerslide Hardcore Evo with a NN frame holding 4x90mm with a light rockering. However, this frame is not the one that comes with the Hardcore Evo assembled in factory. You will find the price for the Powerslide Hardcore Evo in any Google search, it will vary depending on the country. Besides, every year the models lightly change.

  • @SkatefreshVideos

    @SkatefreshVideos

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. Haha. I will tell you she still prefers triskates and the reason is pretty simple: she has a permanent injury in a hip and triskates allow her to skate without the effort 4 wheels require. Big wheels have more speed, keep the momentum longer and therefore she can relax some more. Triskates saved her years ago, she was always on 4x80mm before the accident. However, she loves to do tricks, dancing, etc. and that is something better achieved through small wheels. The frames she has been testing lately are nice for these tricks and that is why you have seen her riding 4 wheels again.

    The thing is, I can do crossovers going to the right, but that's not the way my skate rink goes. I'm trying to do crossovers going to the left(which is the way im supposed to go) But its like I just can't successfully balance on my left leg after I cross my right one over it. I've been trying for a good while and I still can't manage to cross over left, what to do?

  • @SkatefreshVideos

    @SkatefreshVideos

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. Going to the left, when you cross the right leg over the other you must transfer the weight to that leg (the right one) and keep the balance on it, then when you uncross the weight goes back to the left leg. The weight goes from one leg to the other in a cycle. As for the rinks, it's a general rule that everybody goes the same direction to avoid accidents. Most people are right-handed so turning to the left is easier for them, therefore rinks choose the counterclockwise direction as the norm, and lefties need to comply with that rule even while they don't feel comfortable with it. When I practice crossovers I go to a fountain where there is a big circle around, so I can go either clockwise or counterclockwise and either forwards or backwards.
