Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion is a first-person shooter video game developed by Acclaim Studios Austin and published by Acclaim Entertainment. It was released for the Nintendo 64 video game console in 2000. Shadow of Oblivion is the third main installment of the Turok series and a sequel to Turok 2: Seeds of Evil. The game received generally favorable reviews from critics. A separate game, also titled Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion, which is set in the same fictional universe but follows a different storyline, was released for the Game Boy Color in 2000.
Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion is a first-person shooter where the player controls the protagonist from a first-person perspective. The player can choose to play the game as either Danielle or Joseph, who both have unique abilities. For example, Danielle can jump higher and carry high-powered weapons, while Joseph can crawl into crevices and use the sniper rifle in conjunction with the night vision goggles. Each character has eight main weapons that may be upgraded in different ways for a total of 16 weapons per character, although some of them are shared. Players can save their progress at any time with the use of a Controller Pak.

I personally really liked Evolution. I think it was mostly because there were a few levels later in the game that are still to this day some of my favorite level design. It was called The Suspended City. The assault on the city had the coolest city siege feeling I had played at the time. Outside that though I don't remember anything about the game other than the multiplayer was fun with friends.

Those cutscenes were great back then! Edit: also, while both get the assault rifle, Danielle gets the minigun and Joseph gets a Sniper Rifle. The shotgun also has character specific upgrades, one gets the shredder (lazer shot that bounces off walls) and the other gets incendiary rounds.

Comparing Frame rate of Turok 3 with the Turok 1 and 2 HD remasters. I've been playing Turok ever since i was like 8 or 10 years old, and even replaying for years and years later, I've never had problems with any of the 3 main Turok Games on the N64. Of course the HD remasters would have better Frame rates because the technology that we have now these days is like far superior compared to what we had back in the 90s. I've played Turok 3 quite fine and even manage to unlock Joshua as a secret playable character in Turok 3.
@N.i.E.M.O

@Baron o Spirals Turok 1 ran like butter on the N64 for the most part, but Turok 2 was by far the worst running game of the entire series. Good reason too, as it was the most complex. Turok 3 toned down the enemy AI, death animations, particle effects, and audio quality when compared to T2, but the framerate was undoubtedly an improvement - still not as smooth as T1, but better than T2. Also, T3 had the least amount of 'fog', which was impressive for the time. T3 needs a remaster

@Gruntvc

Probably not, but they did get Half Life 1 on Sega Dreamcast and PS2. The cancelled Dreamcast version is pretty interesting and can be played.
@sonsofblades
5 жыл бұрын
@@Gruntvc Yeah, I knew about those. I already tried them both out (the ps2 version was actually my first taste of Half Life many years ago). Though strictly judging on Turok 3's handling of environments and character models, it wouldn't have been too far fetched for HL1 to be running on there. Albeit at a 20 FPS rate or somewhat less. Consider that the original textures for HL1 could fit in a 3DFX Voodoo 1 (4mb) (128x128 resolution textures, IIRC), and the model complexity was actually quite a bit lower than even Turok 3's models, I don't see why it wouldn't have been able to be ported. A N64 port wouldn't have been profitable, though, since it would have most likely launched at the very end of the N64's life. Probably a good reason it doesn't exist.
Your videos are getting more fun to watch. Noice job Sonny Gym.
Turok 3 also ends on an unresolved cliffhanger to this day, which kinda sucked. Even Turok 2 has a more satisfying ending, as at least Oblivion was still defeated in that game despite the sequel hook.

I remember really loving Turok Evolution. It wasn't on a comparison basis with the rest of the series, but as an FPS at the time it had everything for me: Cool creature enemies, crazy worlds, fun weapons, and I think it was the first FPS I ever saw serious use of some friendly AI (in a couple "chapters"). I replayed it somewhere back, and found some issues with it, but nothing too drastic. Regardless of how you tear it apart though, I always look forward to hearing it or anything of the Turok franchise being discussed again.
I remember playing this back in the day.. it was ok. Hi from Brisbane good to see a decent Australian content creator, keep it up dude
I loved this game when I was a kid. The black cartridge always lured me in. I was so terrified of it until I finally sat down and beat it in a matter of hours with my friends when I was like 10. We had it for years beforehand. I always thought it was an amazing game......then I found and played Turok 2. Turok 3 is absolutely pitiful in comparison.

Its funny hearing your Thanos ainti-climax analogy, seeing how that's almost exactly what happens at the beginning of Endgame.
Love you G! Great look into the game
I think a remake of this on modern systems and fixing its issues and a rewrite could get the series going again.
I had this game and there was a marked difficulty change depending on who you picked. Danielle had the harder game overall for several reasons: 1) Her exclusive areas were mostly long falls and bottomless pits of instant death. 2) Her weapon upgrades were either explosives which would damage her or a minigun that chewed through assault rifle ammo. 3) Her height made her a big target even while crouching. 4) She was considerably slower. I was disappointed that a fourth game was never made to finish where the ending left off. It was a big question mark that never got answered.
The HALF LIFE references are undeniable.

Turok 1 and 2 had PC ports which made remastering far easier for Nightdive, and that's what they used as a base. 3 doesn't have a port at all, so unless they have the original source code and dev files for it, I'd personally say it's quite unlikely.

Night Dive bought the rights, supposedly at least and I think they got the code to it alongside the Turok 2 code as well so it's a matter of money and time I'd guess. Stephen Kick made the joke about whether fans would want them to buy the rights to Turok Evolution as well - I have to imagine his shock when some replied wanting just that.

You know I used to watch my dad play Turok 3 on the N64 (I was too young and this game freaked me out, but I would play Turok 1 & 2 with cheats) but I gotta tell you, this footage looks nothing like I remember and trust me I remember this game very vividly because it scared me shitless. I wonder if the PC & N64 versions look that much different because I see subtle similarities, but this looks extremely different from what I remember. On a separate note I’m looking forward to Turok: Evolution because for me personally I freaking love that game. If they did a remaster like a legit remaster I’d buy it because it’s fucking awesome.

Oh Turok, sweet childhood nostalgia be thine. I remember getting the first game when I was young because they had a used rental copy for sale at a Blockbuster, and because it was called Turok: Dinosaur Hunter, my Dad thought I'd like it (because I loved dinosaurs, if the implications isn't clear). It was my first FPS and I really enjoyed playing it, though I basically only played it with the cheats on. Fast Forward a couple of years and come Christmas time at the relatives and my aunt gives me a very small box to open for Christmas (something I'm ashamed to say I was crushed at the prospect of at the time, because bigger was always better), which held a copy of Turok 2: Seeds of Evil. It became one of my favorite games of all time, though I still used cheats liberally (I still remember the "unlock all cheats" password: bewareoblivionisathand), but tried to play more on my own. I loved it so much, that when I saw the sequels/side games in the Blockbuster, I had to play them. And thus I discovered the disappointment of Turok 3 and the not-great-without-friends and never-mentioned Turok: Rage Wars, the multiplayer-only entry that was built on Turok 2's surprisingly good multiplayer suite with the intent to cash in on the popularity of Quake Arena and the like. I still rented both games multiple times, but knew that they weren't really what I wanted. So I quietly moved on from Turok, letting it rest in my nostalgia, unblemished by time. Then I made the mistake of buying Turok: Evolution out of a bargain bin for $3. After trying to play it, I felt like I paid about $5 too much and have to work to remember the good times anything bearing the name "Turok" gave me. Or at least I did until recently, when I bought the PC re-release of Turok 2 that patched everything up, gave it the best control scheme, and made it run smoothly. Now I just focus on that when I think of Turok. Some childhood memories, and that. Anything with numbers bigger than 2...eh, never heard of it.
I have dreams about the beginning segment of this game. I always wondered what was down the streets that the player couldn’t go to.

Seeing some of the comments saying they weren’t aware of this one’s existence. Wow, I’m one of those fans that got this when it got released and for granted it could’ve done better. Don’t get me wrong I can understand why some missed this. And while I agree that Night Dive should do a remaster. I think they should do a remake because imo I feel like there were some things missing and playing which ever character doesn’t change the game much. And if I recall Acclaim was going through some troubles so I guess there’s that.

The "hidden" were not going to show up again by the looks of it, and neither were Tommy's girlfriend nor grandfather. I wish there was an extensive interview with Prey's story-writer to read what his original plans were, as I got really invested in the game's characters, setting, and story. I hate it when developers do not finish a game's storyline, the same thing happened with Half-Life 2, but at least there we had some sort of closure with Laidlaw's "Epistle 3". Sorry for the long rant lol, but it pisses me off.

I keep hoping that Night Dive Studios will indeed bring this to PC using the KEX engine, which (I believe) is what they used on the first 2 Turok games, and both of those turned out absolutely fantastic imo. I would LOVE to play this game with proper frame rates, because the biggest killer for me about this game on the N64 back in the day was just that...the bad frame rates. Same with Turok 2, but that game seemed like it fared a bit better in that regard in the long run.
