Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion is a first-person shooter video game developed by Acclaim Studios Austin and published by Acclaim Entertainment. It was released for the Nintendo 64 video game console in 2000. Shadow of Oblivion is the third main installment of the Turok series and a sequel to Turok 2: Seeds of Evil. I loved playing Turok 1 & 2, was never really interested in rage wars. I never got the chance to play this game when it first came out and could not find a copy anywhere in Australia at the time. I remember writing to a N64 magazine here a while after it was released and telling them of my love for the previous 2 games and ended up getting a reply wanting to know my address as they had a copy they wanted to give me. I was speechless and when it finally arrived I played the hell out of it and enjoyed it as much as the others.

Respectfully I disagree. I feel Turok 2 was the highest point in the series. True the textures are better in turok 3, i found the animations, meshes and gore where better in turok 2. Less linear to boot.

The first game i've ever played on the N64 was Turok 2 when my mom bought me my first system and it came along with NFL 98'. What I can say in my personal opinion about it is that it definitely tops Turok 1, 3, and Rage Wars. It has better weapons, plus increased capacity of how many guns you get to carry (more than any other Turok), better movements, better animations, more realistic blood/gore, smarter/strategic AI enemies, intensifying/atmospheric music. The levels were more intricate and complex, although they were very long so I will give it that downside because it did take me months to finish and complete the entire game (given I was 7 yrs old at the time..). But it's still what made the game worth playing for me, that urge of wanting to finish it and paying very close attention to detail when finding the feathers, keys and special objects, it's what made it a very memorable experience that I couldn't find replaceable when it comes to the other Turok games, or any first-person shooter for that matter. I will admit that the story is a bit lacking in Turok 2, but it's the gameplay that pretty much makes up for any lack of storytelling. Which is why I have to hand the 2nd place of being my next favorite to Turok 3. Turok 1 is great, but it annoyed me how you start off the whole series not knowing anything about what's going on when it comes to the story. But the gameplay and visuals is still great for being an early release for the N64 in 97'. Rage Wars is a dead last for me. It was just a very plain Turok game to say the least. It's fun for a while, but it gets boring when you have no buddies to play it with. Plus it was merely a deathmatch type of game with only bots.

I always thought that the visuals in Turok 3 were a step back from 2, though it was still very enjoyable and its cutscenes and scripted parts gave it a more cinematic feel. I was always impressed with the facial animations in some of the cutscenes; they looked believable, which is not something I would have expected from an N64 title. They had some cliffhanger in Turok 3 that you know the team at Iguana were planning on elaborating on in another game that they probably never even worked on before they went bankrupt. It's a damn shame, too. This series died far before its time.

+Andersen William It was a step back because Turok 3 was rushed because Acclaim Entertainment was shitting Acclaim Studios Austin to finish the game (Also , Acclaim Studios Austin was working on Turok Evolution at the same time when Turok 3 was in development.) Yes the facial animations was pretty good, too bad most of the N64 games did not used that for their titles.

“Sorry I’m late Mr. President!” I think the reason the graphics didn’t look as good was because of the amount of resources and time they spent for facial animation and animations in general. They pushed the N64 to the limits so it came with a price which is dial it down some in other graphical parts of the game. The fps already seemed to drop down to the single digits at times. All of this along with what was said in earlier comments about this game during it’s development cycle.

This was my first introduction to the Turok saga actually. I remember this game well and it was awesome. By the time it came out my brothers and I were still using the N64 strong. We didn’t get the GameCube until it was already at least 2 years old. My brothers and I were all 10, 12, and 14 years old and we split the cost 3 ways to be able to afford it and Turok Evolution was one of the first games we got, how could you forget that Minigun! Very good memories

Yeah, it's such a shame that they aren't recognized at all. Don't get me wrong, I love Goldeneye and Perfect Dark, and I loved the old Rare, but it kind of bothers me that they get all the praise while Akklaim/Iguana, which in my opinion where pushing more boundaries, do not. I mean, the simple fact that Turok 1 got console FPS control right months before Goldeneye launched and it's not even recognized kind of pisses me off even to this day.

Really enjoyable review to watch, thanks for making great content. I remember playing this game all the time back in grade school, my mom would let me rent it from Hollywood Video down the block when I was doing well in school. It was the only Turok game I didn't cheat to get through, and I was even able to assemble the PSG without cheats! I think I have the fondest memories with 3 for those reasons, but 2 is an objectively a superior game when you look at complexity, longevity, and the impact it had on the industry. 3 is great but doesn't surpass other corridor shooters of the time

Best to worst Turok games 1. Turok 2: Seeds of Evil (Best Soundtrack, best weapons, better enemies, awesome boss fights, the best Protagonist.) 2. Turok: Dinosaur Hunter (Its so Original) 3. Turok: Shadow's of Oblivion ( Better Sequel to Seeds of Evil) 4. Turok: Rage Wars ( It was an alright game put with big glitch problem on 2 plyaer trail. Auto-Shotgun is so awesome in that one.) 5. Turok: Evolution ( Really can't stand the whole flying. weapons are kind of eh, especially that shotgun I'm like what kind of shotgun is this) 6. Turok: (2008) ( A major disaster Reboot)

I didn't think this was as good as Turok 2, but I still heartily enjoyed the game. I didn't really think that choosing between Joseph and Danielle made that much difference though. True one was specialized in sniper weapons, and one had explosive weapons, but I really don't feel it changed the game that much. The ending was also a cliffhanger, and instead of getting a Turok 4, we got Turok Evolution, an extremely substandard prequel to the original Dinosaur Hunter, followed up by a remake that absolutely no one liked. Turok is one of the few gaming sagas that I would like to see revived, even though I now that will NEVER happen.

Turok 3 was a major disappointment when I played it long ago. The graphics were worse overall, the music was a huge step back from the symphonic touch we had before, and the worlds and enemies I encountered felt bland and uninteresting. It's not a very bad game, but it's definitely nowhere near as good as Turok 1 and 2.

At first glance, it seems that way, but (if you haven't played the game to the end, consider this your spoiler warning) the ending suggests that Adon would be able to bring back Joshua, even if it meant turning her back on the council. So while Joshua appeared to have died, it's possible that he is to be brought back. However, until someone makes a continuation of Turok 3 (doubtful considering who has the rights to the game, even if they licensed the first 2 games to Night Dives), we may never know.

That's true Glenn. But from a technical aspect I would have to say T2 has unquestionably superior lighting, enemy AI, texturing, animation and of course death animations as opposed to almost instant disappearance in T3. Though that was to be expected considering it was practically a new team. I agree though that the save anywhere and more straight forward level designs in T3 are improvements...Your vids are top notch by the way! Fantastic!

Too bad i missed this game, well, all four Turok games, they do look fun and amazing on a technical level. At the time n64 cartridges were quite expensive, and also i was a student, so my budget for videogames was so limited that i had very few games. They did deserve a rental at least, but well, they are good games and i'm glad to watch it in your videos.

Personally my biggest criticism of Turok 3 is that it went in the Half-Life style "set piece to set piece" level design from my preferred open exploratory level design that the first two games went with. Still, that sort of level design is done well and it really is a technically impressive game with solid shooty mechanics. Acclaim and Rare both pushed the system to absolutely amazing technical heights especially near the end of the console's life. Banjo Tooie, Perfect Dark, Turok 3, Conker and (to use a first party title for once) Majora's Mask were amazing games on a technical level. Of those, I personally think only the more cartoony ones aged well graphically.

I feel that the fight for the graphics in this game hurt some of the game play. I was weird admittedly, but I loved getting lost in the levels of Turok 1 and 2. Being able to get lost felt as if it was more of a realistic environment to me. Sure I liked Turok 3 when it came out, and I thought that mis-matched world dimension was a neat idea, but it felt more of a linear funnel. Maybe that's why I enjoyed Hexen so much.

I still have the cartridges of Turok 1 and 2 and I have never play part 3 but based on what I seen in videos and reviews of part 3 I think Turok 2 had way more and a better arsenal of weapons than 1 or 3 it also had really good buss battles. Turok 2 was a great game and it did have the nightmare of getting kill before been able to save the game progress but still a great game. Turok 3 did have great graphics thanks to the expansion pack and they did alleviate the nightmare of saving your progress something that the other games didn't have. I definitely would love to find some free time and go try Turok 3 and just make my own decision if is better than Turok 2 or not.

When this came out I did take notice, but I didn't get it at first because I had expected it to be released on the PC like the first two games were which is where I played the first two games, but I picked it up a year or two later on a discounted price and I was quite surprised. It took time to grow on me as much as it has, but it still impressed me - it felt close to a PC shooter with Half-Life esque elements and aside from the floating weapons and items were the only things that still felt like a more console oriented shooter. My favourite Turok is still the first one, but this would be my second favourite.

Turok 2 felt like a significant progression from Turok 1. And it was brilliant. Turok 3 feels like it was a completely different game that they decided late-on to add the Turok name to. It plays so differently. The graphics are actually worse than Turok 2, and the weapons are curiously inferior. I enjoyed Turok 3 but it isn't a patch on Turok 2.

Great review and thanks for it. I enjoyed the game but not so much as the other two. I get your point of view, but Turok 3 felt to much like half-life to me. I really missed the feel of the other two games. For instance: 'how you can hear Tall'Sett and Joshua struggle to climb a vine, how you can hear them both breath the air in their lung when they go out of the water, and the I AM TUROK quote and that kind of stuff. I really like it what they did to the story but I cant get how there are two lightburdens. Cleary both Danielle and Josh both have one but in the two other games there was but one that was given trough the generations to each turok. Well, Turok 3 was oke, played it on oblivion in 2,5 hours. But i missed the tone and feel of the other two. Great review

@@n64glennplant I can understand why some die hard fans of the first two may not have enjoyed the 3rd game, as it changed quite a few things. As you mentioned, one of the major differences was it's more linear style and I prefer it (going to be hated for saying that!) The size of the levels in the previous games and ambiguity about where to go, sometimes hurt the experience for me as I would just be wandering around aimlessly forever. Sometimes Turok 3 is a bit TOO linear, I'll agree, but for the most part it keeps you moving and there are always varied objectives, new weapons to try and enemies to destroy. Great game! You make me want to start reviewing N64 games Glenn, I love that era.

i play 3 more than the others, mostly because i rarely pull out the old emu. I suppose this is because it is the most complete experience. I remember when It first came out, I was not happy they created a game (as I thought in 1999?) that looked like gangbusters Turok but played more like 007. Obviously it played way different. My high school self wanted Turok 2.5 but actually got #3. Amazed by the dialog and animation but it was a 64$ purchases that leaked into my next gen Christmas gift. I ended up asking for Turok and I am proud to own it still.

I've been wanting to play this game for awhile and finally bought it earlier this year. I enjoyed it for what it was, even if the frame rate was pretty low in some areas. I wish it had more dinosaurs though. As the series progressed on the N64, it seemed like there were less and less dinosaurs which stinks. But it was based on the Valiant/Acclaim comics to be fair. I liked the 2008 Turok though even with the tame violence and less impressive weapons and would love to see another entry in the series.

Turok 2 is definitely my favorite Turok game of them all. Turok 3 is not as good as the first two games, but it's still a game that I love. I just wish that night dive studios had given us an hd remaster of Turok 3 for modern consoles like they did with the first two games. They did a fantastic job with Turok 1 and 2 and probably would have with Turok 3 improving it''s gameplay and geting rid of some of it's flaws. My guess of one of the reasons why they didn't is cause they just thought alot of people considered Turok 3 to be a dud. But it it really isn't, it's one of the best games on the Nintendo 64, one of the few reasons I would want to own one today.
