The Operative: No One Lives Forever (sometimes abbreviated as NOLF) is a first-person shooter video game with stealth gameplay elements, developed by Monolith Productions and published by Fox Interactive, released for Microsoft Windows in 2000. The game was ported later to the PlayStation 2 and Mac OS X.
A story-driven game set in the 1960s, No One Lives Forever has been critically acclaimed for its stylistic representation of the era in the spirit of many spy films and television series of that decade, as well as for its humor. Players control female protagonist Cate Archer, who works for a secret organization that watches over world peace. In addition to a range of firearms, the game contains several gadgets, which are disguised as ordinary female fashion items.
At the time of its release, many reviewers felt that No One Lives Forever was the best first-person shooter since 1998's critically acclaimed Half-Life. After receiving several Game of the Year awards in the press, a special Game of the Year Edition was released in 2001, which included an additional mission. The Operative: No One Lives Forever was followed by a sequel entitled No One Lives Forever 2: A Spy in H.A.R.M.'s Way released in 2002, and a spin-off that takes place during the time between the first two games entitled Contract J.A.C.K. released in 2003, both developed by Monolith.
A re-release of the game has been hampered by the complicated state of the series' intellectual property (IP) rights, with even parties assumed to be in possession of the IP having publicly admitted not knowing the precise legal situation of the series.

A shame about the IP hell that this game is trapped in. Activision, Sierra, Vivendi Universal, Fox and Monolith all have no idea who owns the rights to the game and it's apparently not worth the lawyer fees for any of them to make a claim. A shame because for all its faults, it really was a game that had 110% charm.

I mean she seems to assume that Y the Last Men as an example of straw feminism based on a single panel of an extremist group despite the book being more nuanced about that topic. On the other hand, I’ve seen dishonest anti SJW too. @Sursurk nah dont agree. I had Skyrim on PC when it came out and ran it on Max settings, no issues. Now I have the Special Edition on PS4 Pro which looks WAY better then the PC version did. Also, why not take a look at Yakuza Kiwami 2, The Last of Us Remastered, Crash Bandicoot, Okami HD, Halo: MasterChief Collection (specifically Halo 2), Burnout Paradise Remastered... Oh that's right these are console games... That's because PC isn't the be all end all, and PC does not get everything good. PC only gamers miss out. Your still waiting on Spiderman and RDR2. There are significantly less PC Remasters cause some of the best shit only gets to console and doesn't get Remastered to PC . I ain't even gonna start on the quality of Nintendo games you miss out on. Unless of course you get it illegally and download 50 different programs and update the shit out them just to simulate a fuckin controller we just only need to switch on.

The first NOLF was wildly creative in level design, overheard goon conversations, dynamic music, feminine spy gadgets and female representation in fps. To this day I still consider this in the top 5 fps games that I have played. A game like this could only be made in the early 2000's. I still remember the Baron Dumas interview that was so rediculous and hilarious wrt the dialogue options. The 2nd NOLF just didn't hit the same high points as the first imo. There were at least 2-3 long conversations that you could overhear in the first game which clearly indicated that the goons had a life and that they were not just cannon fodder (a goon talking about his small daughters first day at school, another one scared shitless due to his mil coming to stay for a month or so, a bad guy wanting a half day so he could attend some Beatles concert...etc)...but you had to be stealthy to actually hear these fantastically well written dialogues.

I seem to recall that the door sealed anyway when I finally got through. Rude.

You can't really talk about adaptive music systems without a HUGE shout out to Lucasarts iMUSE system. I think they were one of the first and the best. TIE fighter is the game that comes to mind that really nailed it with the adaptive music. It came out in 1994 - 6 years before NOLF I loved the Lithtech games. They were always colourful and fun, and pretty fast paced. ID games were technologically ground breaking but had that 'I live in my parents basement and only listen to Metallica' vibe to them.
