I've had my lathe for several years, and have turned a couple hundred pens with it, as well as other small objects. I've always been hesitant to try a bowl though. This video walked my right through my first attempt, and now I have a nice little bowl to put my keys and loose change in, and also the confidence to try bigger, and fancier bowls. Thanks!

I've done a fair amount of spindle turning, but never any bowls. Bought a decent lathe recently that came with a nice chuck and a bunch of other extras. I've watched dozens of bowl turning videos that SHOWED the turning of the mortise with which to mount the bowl to the chuck, but did not EXPLAIN anything. This is the first I've watched that does that, so thanks!

Watching your video I'm reminded of how important it is to master and stick to the basics. I've done mostly spindle turning. My lathe is a 1950's era cast iron unit, eight inches center over ways, 36" between centers, all in excellent condition. I built the stand, suffice it to say the stand is quite heavy and quite sturdy. At a thrift store I bought an old treadmill, quite a good one for $40. I salvaged a Leeson three horse power DC motor out of it. I did spend $115 on a variable speed controller. So my lathe is infinitely variable speed from five to thirty-two hundred RPMs. I love it. My only complaint is that I wish it were bigger. I want to start bowl and vessel turning. Alas! small bowls. I'm two years from the start of the fourth quarter of my life so I've got plenty of time for a bigger lathe. I will say that when sanding I turn the lathe down to its slowest speed. Saves on sandpaper. Best regards young man!

I watched many lathe videos about bowl turning but I was getting very frustrated. I'm retired and I have no previous lathe instruction. This video with the faceplate ring was very helpfu[. I ordered the Axminister chuck system for my first project. I have also started using carbide tools and find turning with them very satisfying. Maybe some day I will try the bowl gouge like the video pros. The equipment cost and techniques required for for the pro tooling is prohibitive. Thanks for your practical and helpful videos!

@@robertgarcia9070i know this is a late comment but my first lathe i bought a year ago is a Sealey SL1000, cost me £150 2nd hand, does the job although only 2 speeds, i don't find it an issue really. And tool wise - Robert Sorby - 6 piece turning tool set it's called, and also recommend the Robert Sorby ProEdge for sharpening with a long grind jig.

I'm having a lot of issue with mine at the moment. After checking it over (it's roughly made in the 60s) it looks like a worn out bearing that allows a slight vibration. No matter how delicate I am it would skip and gouge. I'm hoping that it's the only issue. I didn't have a problem turning the outer shape. Just the interior shape.
