This is a perfect demonstration for a beginner like me! So glad I came across this video. Thanks!
I'm not even done watching this video yet and this is by far the most excellent video explaining each tools' usage that I've seen yet. I'm brand new to turning so this is exactly what I needed--thanks!
wow, I'm bummed to only be finding this now! perfectly splendid editing and lessons! it's already sped up on the parts that need it. very concise info throughout. I've been turning for a few years off and on and never seen it broken down so properly. thank you!
Why can't everything be this good. Loved the video, explained so clearly and the video'ing is just spot on. Well done and Thank you!!!

I absolutely agree, Gary! So easy to understand and demonstrated, that it was very easy to go to my lathe and actually have confidence and success.
Lathe Tools 101 - This was an awesome and concise video. All my answers in 11 minutes.Thank you for the great and informative video!
Thanks, 74 yrs old and just getting into wood turning. Bought an old craftsman metal lathe and converting into wood. Haven't turned wood since 6th grade. My new hobby, I hope lol. Appreciate your teaching.

Hope it all goes well and don't forget our channel features lots of helpful tutorials and project ideas to help you on your journey. Good luck!
Thank you for taking your time and explaining well. Having your camera at that angle, sure helped and seeing what you were saying at the same time. I’m hoping to get a lathe and I think I’ve almost got my husband talked into it.🤞🤞
I haven’t used a lathe since I was at school back in the 1960s, but I’ve recently purchased a very cheap “hobby” lathe from Lidl and I want to start making small stuff, mostly just for fun . . . I like making sawdust! This is a great guide to what chisels I need and how to start using them. Thank you for an excellent, interesting and informative guide to get me started.
Great video my wife brought me a Axminster craft AC305WL woodturning lathe now looking for wood turning chisels. I found this video very helpful thank you
Amazingly informative. Thank you!

Thanks. I just can't get past the feeling that I am a beginner. Been a little over a year since power and a cleaned up bench. Hoping to get back out and play with my lathe again. Thank you very much!
I’ve been woodworking for over 45 years and turning for the last 20 (?). So, I’m experienced and reasonably skilled. For any newcomers, I can vouch that this is an excellent video with all that you need to know to get good results quickly. If only, it had been around when I started. I’ve downsized my lathe now to an Axminster machine. Looks very much like the one on the video - perhaps a little smaller. Having had a large, much more expensive lathe, I can say that the Axminster does not represent a step down in quality. I have no connection with Axminster other than as a customer of many years.

Hi James, that's great to hear our videos are helping teach the next generation of woodworkers. Thanks for sharing.
Superb video ! Explains what each tool can be used for, I now know what to buy.
Great Job! I purchased a lath a few years ago and finally got around to using it. While purchasing other used tools I acquired about a dozen old lath tools. I have ordered the sharpening equipment for the tools and now I have an understanding of what each tool does. Great job on your video.

Great job! You are quick to get to the point but explain things brilliantly.
excellent video
Very good demo simple and straight forward
Great video thanks
Fantastic, these videos are a real boost, I am new to Woodturning and thought I would have to wait until COVID had gone before I could buy a lathe and get on a training course, now I can buy my lathe and train on line. Thanks Axminster…
Excellent. I especially like the close-up of the business end of the tool and your concise narrative throughout the video. Wish I could give you a 👍👍👍👍👍 on the like button. Greetings from Kentucky!
Best and useful video i have ever seen. Ty.
Good instructional video .For beginner a bit on mountindpg blanks,centre finding,punching etc.would be good .When using roughing gouge having your left thumb clear of the tool will result in loosing your nail or your thumb .Take care
Fantastic video.....so clear and very well explained.....thank you
Thanks very much - this is exactly what I was looking for! I'm not into wood turning but I've bought a set of these chisels and made a tool rest for my metal lathe so I can make small pieces like tool handles. Your explanations of which tool to choose and how to use it are excellent! Learned more in 11 minutes than in watching hours of other videos. Bookmarked for future reference! You've encouraged me subscribe and explore wood turning in more detail. I've too many hobbies as is, so I don't know if I should thank you for that ;) Cheers!

Just about to buy my first 15cm bench lathe do I need smaller bench tools for this lathe? Thank you.
@axminster
Жыл бұрын
Hi Terry, here is Colwin's reply: "No, you can use the same size lathe, however, sometimes, especially when bowl turning, you will find the bed can get in the way of the longer handles on bowl gouges. Also the cut from a larger gouge can cause problems with lathes of smaller motors just not having the power to drive through the cut." I hope this helps.
So the spindle gouge & the skew chisel are the only tools in this set where the tool rest is above center?
@axminster
Ай бұрын
The skew will need to be higher for planning cuts and the spindle gouge can be used just above centre line.
👍🙏😎
Not yet got my lathe so please excuse the question. Does it matter which direction the lathe is turning the spindle? I notice you've got it running 'into' the tools, ie anti-clock, rather than 'away' from them.
@axminster

Hi Tony, the lathe has to run toward you in order to turn. Hope this helps

Hi Vicky, Jason has suggested visiting the following website that lists tutors around the country 😊 - www.registerofprofessionalturners.co.uk/
Ahh, very good instructional video, except that you didn't film the round nose scraper with the bevel against the timber before you started doing that cove. By the time we see the filming there's shavings on the scraper and we can't see the angle that the scraper was held at to make that cut. I had to slow the video speed down to 0.5 to see that action with the scraper. After you saying the scraper is the only tool that you use with the handle high, you almost had it horizontal at right angle to the work. It would be nice to know the correct rake angle for the scraper.
@axminster
3 жыл бұрын
Good morning, There is no correct rake angle as the bevel can be anything from 90 degs to 15 and still work, however for different uses. Generally the 45 degs is the most aggressive and the bevel isnt used to rub the timber. the handle can be placed from parallel upto roughly 30 degs to work well depending on your bevel angle, material to be cut and grain orientation. I hope this helps, please let us know if you have any further questions.
