idk why, but I've seen like 5 videos of purifying sand, and nobody seems to get the first part quite right... you should screen out the rocks and pebbles first so that the remaining grains have fully exposed minerals, i.e. small enough that every grain is only made of around 1-3 minerals crystals stuck together, that way they are all available to chemically react later, which gives higher purity sand, and a faster reaction. long story short, screen the sand, only keeping the finer stuff. my process is as follows: rinse sand through screen to remove all coarse grains and junk material, then rinse remaining sand with water a few times and pour off everything that floats, this removes organic matter, then use a magnet and remove most of the iron minerals, ( you can also try panning it after this step to remove hematite and some heavy minerals that don't contain SiO2) then add the acid to dissolve the carbonates, (warning, concentrated hydrochloric acid can dissolve iron oxide minerals making a nasty green compound, hence the two previous steps) then rinse one last time with water, and you will have relatively pure sand where basically all remaining minerals are either silica or silicates, both of which contain SiO2 in one way or another. then you can continue with the lye separation. also, I don't think silica is a salt, a salt is by definition composed of 2 ions, cations and anions in an equilibrium that makes the substance overall neutral, it is also by definition the result of an acid base reaction. calcium carbonate is a salt since it is the result of the reaction between carbonic acid and a calcium base such as calcium oxide. silicon dioxide is not ionic and is an incredibly inert insoluble oxide in contrast. also, question, is sulfuric acid superior to using hydrochloric acid when neutralizing the solution at the end to form the silicic acid? at least to me is seems easier to just use one acid for the whole process. (I know this is unnecessary correction, but its "silicic acid" not "silic acid") great video though, wish I had friends that also enjoyed chemistry... PS, I've been working on making silicon by the carbothermal reduction method on and off for a year now, and so far I've been successful at creating silicon, but I'm working to increase yield and scale. (I have a solo cup with some silicon pieces in it sitting next to me as of posting this) good luck with your channel man! :D

@@mphonaheng5252 sorry that its been so long, but I do have answers if you haven't given up on this subject yet. I invented a custom way to create silicon without using metal reducing agents, and the materials are cheap, I'm going to test it soon. I've also done lots of prior tests to study the properties of the SiO2 and C reaction that I'm using.
