Turn an AWL- A MUST Have Tool!
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Mike Peace demonstrates how to turn an awl handle on the wood lathe. Mike uses music wire for the shaft that can be found at his product affiliate link amzn.to/2LcXYv2 Awls make great gifts and are fun beginner woodturning projects. The awl could be a leather awl, scratch awl or shop awl.

Real Braw Awl's Mike. They are class. Made a couple myself after viewing your video a while ago. Very satisfying to use home made tools. Thanks

Happy to help, Ken!
Made one of these after watching your video this morning. Had so much fun I'm in the middle of making another. There is something very satisfying about making something practical. Great video thanks.

Yes there is! Great gifts too.
Thanks for the great video! About year ago I made some bradawls, but the process you took in making it is so much better! Will definitely have a go at making a few more now :)

Ummm. A brad awl. I guess I need to make one!
I've made 8 or so since watching you first video on awls 2 days ago. Had a 3/16" brass rod that made 6 and a 1/4" stainless rod for the others. The brass rod is the bomb, really good looking. I'll see if they sell tomorrow at the craft show. Thanks for another great video.

Let me know how the brass works out. I would think the edge would not hold up. I am not aware of any brass edged tools.
Good gift idea Mike. Inspired by your AAW journal article I turned one for myself today from a plum wood scrap, and then came across your video. Well done. I will certainly turn some others as gifts. Incidentally friends doing knot work might like a shorter spiked version to use as a fid.

Yes, a fid would probably also need a thicker shaft. I would get input from a fid user before making one.
This is the exact same way I made 6in1 screwdrivers for Christmas last year. Watching this gave me an idea to use a chainsaw file instead of an awl. Now I have a weekend project

I like making handles. I made one for my chainsaw file too.

One of my favorites. I have an article coming up on this in December in American Woodturner so I guess the editor thought it was a good project.
Thanks Mike!

Very nice Mike. I would have liked to see the end of the texturing tool though. I have never understood exactly how they worked. I really liked the highlighting of the texturing.

Another fun project. As with most of your videos what we learn can be used on many different projects around the shop. I do have a question about BARN STARS do you have any information on patterns Thanks

No. What is a BARN STAR?
14:22 you had me right up until you used a carving mallet to whack the steel onto the handle. But I suppose, they're cheap enough that it doesn't matter how much they get trashed

Odd question...I am teaching a young lady with multiple disabilities how to sew on a machine. An awl would be very helpful for her at times but I need it ball point. They have them for sewing but not local and after the cost of the awl $13 and shipped $8...it just is not in her limited budget. But big box stores have inexpensive pointed awls, any ideas on how to either ball point them or make them dull? Thank you so much...any advice is welcomed.

Just grind the tip back and then hand polish the rounded tip thru multiple grits of finer sandpaper. Start with about 180, 260, 320. Stop if that is smooth enough for you. Or go to a higher grit if necessary. Good luck.

Actually, it is mesquite which is much harder but finishes beautifully.

Sorry, I do not sell them.
I have a couple of quick questions: on your Amazon Associate link the price is $17. for the music wire for (7) pieces, 36" long. Is that correct? In the reviews on Amazon it looks like some people got seven pieces, some got one. Maybe they were using a different link?? If I go through your link and order something that's not on your associate page, do you get a commission on that also? I want you to get the commission on my total Amazon order if that's possible. Thanks for your help sir.

The package has 7 rods. Mystery to me about someone getting 1. Yes, going to my store gets me a commision on anything you buy for the following 24 hours. Thanks for your support!

What are this use for?
@MikePeaceWoodturning

I guess I assumed folks would know. Shame on may. It is used for marking centers for turning, making starter holes for screws, marking lines on woodworking projects, or punching holes in leather. A longer handle and it is an icepick! Thanks for asking.
What did I just watch😂
