How to make an Awl with a Brass Ferrule.

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this episode of Tool Making Bob makes a strike-able awl with a olive wood handle and brass ferrule. An awl is an important tool for any boat builders toolbox let alone any craftsman It's really an essential tool that everyone needs. I've always had a Stanley awl which has worked really
well for me. One of the thing I like about it is that the metal shaft runs through the handle. I can strike it with an hammer with out damaging the handle. So one would be able to punch leather or things like that. I'd be looking for a small lathe project and decided that an awl would be a great small project. I made this awl with and olive wood handle, a brass ferrule, and a tapered polished shaft. All metal parts are easily found at my local hardware store.
awl (/ôl/)noun: awl; plural noun: awls
a small pointed tool used for piercing or punching holes, especially in leather and canvas for sail making.

    I could hear you much better in this video. Thanks for addressing the vocal volume. Awl looks pretty good. Maybe a square awl next? They work great for poking and for drilling points into wood for a better mark prior to drilling, screwing, or nailing. Just a little wrist twist and you're all marked. Square awls work well for plastics and leather as well.

    Do you have a drill press? If yes, then you are 80% of the way to having a lathe. Loads of videos out there on using a drill press for or making a lathe. BTW, a lathe and lathe tools will do the brass too. Carbide lathe tools are slightly better with the brass, but HSS will cut/scrape brass beautifully.

    Genuinely beautiful project with a wonderfully documented process. One question though: How much larger should the diameter of the wood be than the ferrule which it accepts?

  • @TheArtofBoatBuilding

    @TheArtofBoatBuilding

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Scott, I made the wood diameter slightly larger (1/64") than the inside of the ferrule. It is threaded so one could screw it on instead of heating it the way I did. Thanks for watching! Bob
