A birdcage awl is a very handy woodworking tool. This video covers the materials and techniques I used to make the blade for this awl.
After a friend challenged his viewers to make a stubby awl I decided to make a bird cage awl. These are special awls with unique blades. This video explains how I went about making a blade for my awl including the material and techniques involved.
If you’re someone who turns on a lathe this project should be helpful. Please feel free to use it as a guide or to make changes. I will try filing the edge square but suspect I will do faster using my Ridgid sander like yours with frequent quenching to prevent bluing the edge. I have gone to getting very close to a point with the 4 sides and then doing a micro bevel 4 sided point using a CBN hone. Keep making videos. You have an engaging on screen presence!
