How to Make an Awl

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Mike Peace demonstrates how to turn an awl handle on the wood lathe and explains the benefits of a square point birdcage awl. He explains why you should have an awl, why they make great gifts and why they are a great beginner woodturning project.

    Hi Mike, I’ve watched your awl videos several times but just ordered the steel to make several. I always enjoy your videos. You are my go to guy when I need to clarify my plans. I’ve been watching you for 3 years and starting my 3rd year of turning. I’ve been making items for a couple of church auction fund raisers and it feels good to see people bidding for items I’ve made from found wood. I thank you for all this “success”. I’ve recently started making some tall “barn post” snow people similar to what Scott Hampton presented in AAW in the November 2019 Woodturning Fundamentals (Fence Post Snowman). Thanks again Mike for your commitment to woodturning.

    Mike -- Thank you for another good video. In the past, I've avoided making an awl because the instructions for other projects always involved heat treating the awl after the tip was formed. Your approach of using music wire avoids heat treating and makes awl making available to more turners. Thanks!

    i also use the birdcage style awl. Like you said, it cuts the fibers. A round shaft awl has a tendency to slide to one side or the other of a growth ring or the grain as it were. The sharp corners of the square shaft cuts though the grain.

    Thanks for putting this video on youtube. I am in the process of making 15 as Xmas gifts for members of a woodcarving group that I attend. I was fortunate to find awl blades on special at the Lee Valley tools site for less than $1 each.. Ferrules in brass and stainless were sourced from automotive and hydraulic suppliers and were available in many sizes. They are used for covering the ends of braided cable covers and rubber hydraulic line covers. they were the most expensive part at around $2 each. The wood is blackbean salvaged from a hospital handrail . It is 40mm thick, 150mm wide and around 1200mm long. Unfortunately I was only able to obtain one, dozens of the others went into bins going to landfill during the demolition of the building.Too much trouble to accept a tender and allow me access to remove them..This is now a fairly scarce timber in Australia. All the best.

    Yeah Mike, I do leather work also and the birdcage awl is very handy for working leather. It will cut through leather or prick the leather for marking and can be used also as you would use a swivel knife. Very handy to have at the ready any time working in the shop on different projects. I make mine out of damaged brace and bit shanks. The head of the bit is already shaped and with a little grinding makes a very nice bird cage awl as the bits are good steel to begin with. Thanks for the video, lots of good information and tips.

    Mike -- Thanks ... I need an awl ... now I know how to make one! I stumbled onto a way to make plastic pads for my pin jaws. I bought some 1/2" and 5/8" vinyl tubing in the plumbing department at the big box to make protective sheaths for my gouges. I cut 4 pieces of the 5/8" ID tubing about 3/4" long, warmed them up with a air dryer, and slipped them over the pin jaws. You can tighten them down on a ferrule as much as you want, they don't mar the ferrule or finish, and the piece runs just a true as it does with masking tape.

    Great tip, Gerald. I may see if that works on my 25 mm bowl jaws. It does give me an idea. I have lots of different size plastic hose bought to put over tool tips when traveling. I may cut a small piece of each and slice it and see if I can't find one to fit over a tenon. to protect it in my small jaws..

    +jeff oldham I used Nova 25mm bowl jaws. Any jaws that can grasp the ferrule. The challenge of using a commercial collet is finding one that will fit the ferrule but is a possibility. Another option is a wood collet held in you regular jaws. Sharp tools and light cuts!

    That is a great question I should have dealt with in the video, so glad you asked. I simply use a wine cork to protect the end when it is in a tool box. I don't carry one in a bibb. For the three I use in my shop, it is stored in a holder or shelf with a small hole.

    Another question Mike, why is it referred to as music wire?

  • @MikePeaceWoodturning

    @MikePeaceWoodturning

    9 жыл бұрын

    per Wikopedia: "Piano wire, or "music wire", is a specialized type of wire made for use in piano strings. It is made from tempered high-carbon steel, also known as spring steel, which replaced iron as the material starting in 1834. Piano wire has a very high tensile strength to cope with the heavy demands placed upon piano strings; accordingly, piano wire is also used for a number of other purposes, including springs, surgical uses, and in special effects."

    I do like the result. But I do not like that how much wood you turned out. If it is just piece of walnut, maple, oak, ash or any kind of domestic wood, it is definitely ok to do so. But it is exotic wood, no matter it is rosewood or anything else, which takes much longer time to grow than domestic species, and it is not easy to find for everyone out there. Try to save more materials. It is just my philosophy to save as many materials as I can, even it is poplar, the cheap local wood, and I would never waste this much Yucatan Rosewood showed in this clip with great ideas and tips. Hope this could help a little.
