Turia Pitt a decade on from the ‘catastrophic bushfire’ that changed her life | One Plus One

A decade ago Turia Pitt was running an ultramarathon when a grassfire caused burns to 65% of her body. Doctors weren’t sure she’d survive, but she encapsulates what it means to have ‘grit’.
She joins Kurt Fearnley for a run by the beach, and a conversation about determination and her life ten years after the “catastrophic bushfire” that changed her life.

Turia is an amazing survivor.. But her partner Micheal deserves great recognition for helping her through this trauma.. Most young men wouldn't have been able to deal with all hard work it took to get her to this point. They are an incredibly strong couple. Bless you both...

@@2Bad4YOUuu It's a lot more common with men then most realize. People say this as if men run for the hills when stuff like this happens but I find the reaction is about equal across the board. Some men become disabled and women run for the hills for many obvious reasons (same ones as men's reasons) but the standout difference for women is if the man loses the provider role on top of all the other problems....it's a nope for almost all women eventually. Men don't do that if a woman loses the ability to work. Actually that's just true regardless of any disabling accident.

Turia is an amazing human being. My self esteem was crushed when I lost four teeth due to severe Fluxocilin (oral antibiotic) allergy, to the extent that I developed the habit of covering my mouth when laughing. I cannot imagine going through what this woman has been through. It took YEARS to save up the money to get my teeth fixed, and I just was NOT myself until then. I remember having to hold back tears on public transport once when a handsome man complemented my appearance and shyly asked me for my phone number because I felt SO UGLY with those few missing teeth 😢 Turia is an inspiration, and her partner is a shinning example of what a "good man" SHOULD be. God bless them both.

@@marlama1982 you should go visit dentist and ask him/her. Receding gums are caused by different reasons and can be a combination of different factors like certain bacteria (less likely), teeth grinding (which usually happens at night while you sleep) and they will ask you to wear a mouth piece/retainer while you sleep which will be custom made as it needs to be fitted if that’s the cause. Teeth grinding is caused by psychological stress normally. Also receding of gums can be because of genetics. But they need to take examine your teeth and gums to determine the cause. Receding of gums is rarely caused by antibiotics, has never seen or heard of it.

We all need inspirational people like your sister in our lives. And what I have learned over my nearly 65 years, there is always a reason to get up, small kindnesses to others bring you joy, and what matters is what you do today. Like Turia, the next corner, just one foot in front of the other, leads to good things. I am sure your sister is remembered by many as the way to live the life we have. Grief never leaves, but it slowly becomes a less uncomfortable thing,, like the rough abrasive pot scourers, it loses power to scrape and scratch. Eventually your memories will be a comforting caress.

I watched the 60 Minutes Australia show about Turia and Michael first. Turia is truly the most inspiring woman I’ve ever seen. I never dreamed anyone that’s been burned as much could ever accomplish the physical activities she has and her attitude is amazing. And let’s not leave out Michael. This is love. He didn’t leave because of the adversity or that she didn’t look the same. What a wonderful person and support to Turia. I was quite angry how the extremely wealthy marathon organizer took no responsibility and seems to have absolutely no compassion because she’s too worried about racking up even more wealth from these marathons. But, instead of focusing on how unjustly she’s been treated by this super wealthy and completely selfish organizer, Turia focuses on the positive and moving forward with her life in the best possible way. I love how she said she’s so happy now. I’m so happy that she survived, thrived and she and Michael have a beautiful family and are loving life together. I wish them the very best that life has to offer. They’re a shining example to us all.

I remember in the 60 minutes interview she did she mentioned wanting to regain her previous looks not just for vanity but for her own need to persevere. I’m honestly shocked how much she was able to reclaim her face and look very similar to how she used to. I know it’s a small victory compared to having her mobility and life back but it really shows how far she’s come.

She looks really good. I sae another documentary and I am shocked to see how great she looks. Their children are super cute and I think she is very lacky to have a family like the one she has. And her partner is the partner anybody could dream off. He never saw the scars, he always saw her, regardless. I wish the the very best and a very long life together.

Both the organizer and her husband are despicable and Morgan Stanley should fire the husband.

When she has those little moments when she can’t do what she describes as a simple task, like opening the jar of spaghetti sauce, she should remember that she has overcome so much more than most people would ever be able to do. What a fine example for her kids!

Dear, Turia, I have been following your story since the terrible accident happened and you are so inspirational , beautiful, and have such determination. I have Lymphedema with open wounds which is extremely painful ,l am on morphine every 4 hours but l know my pain doesn't even come close to what you went through not to mention the emotional anguish you have suffered too because of the accident. I wish l could be more like you when you say you believe any one can do anything taking baby steps, l believe you and you give me so much hope, l want to thankyou. I remember you said you had gotten back into physical shape after the accident and now you were going to focus on wanting to get your looks back as best as you possibly could , that you were no way just going to accept the way you looked after the fire. I would like to say that l watched this interview and l think you have come such a long way as far as your looks improving since l first saw you when you took off your mask. Your face and hair look beautiful in this interview. Your nose looks very good and you can't hardly notice the scars are minimal. Your complexion is very good , and all your features and face are beautiful. To me you have achieved that goal too. You are an amazing person , with a wonderful husband and 2 beautiful kids. You help so many people more than you know, l wish you the best in your life and your future .- Debbie Steen

Just watched Turia's 60 Minutes episode. It ended with the question of where she thought she'd be in 1 yr?...5 yrs?...10 yrs? She seemed sure that she'd be doing the things she loves & she'd be doing them with Michael, including having children. I'm so very glad to see that 10 yrs later, all of that has come true for her♥️ How blessed your 2 kids are to have you for a Mom💯 Turia, you are a shining, beautiful example of the best of us as human beings. This world is a better place because you are in it. Thank you for sharing your story!!🙌 🤜🤛 You rock!!😊

I've watched the first video about her and then saw this one and really wanted to see it, and I'm sad when seeing all that she's gone through but could not stop watching. She's simply incredible. I think her finest moment in this interview was her final comment of the video where she tells the interviewer that she has really enjoyed talking to him. I was so glad that she told him this and that it was included in the video. She was recognizing him for his ability to have become someone who knew how to draw her out and get her to express what she needed to. Despite being the subject of the interview she asked him several questions about his experience in life. He obviously admires her final comment brought the interview to an end where he was the important one. I believe they are true friends.

There just aren't any words how inspiring and beautiful Turia is!! I was diagnosed with a rare genetic disease about 5 years ago and I also have my now husband Michael who has been my rock and my family! I'm kinda the same way but I feel like Turia has even more grit then I have and when I am told that I can't...well I do it despite the people who don't always understand what I can accomplish! I also completely understand how easy some things I could do before my diagnosis are harder to do now and that can be vulnerable as well as make you feel less independent. However, you also cherish life and all that you can do! I love your strength and courage Turia, I can't even imagine all that you have been through!
