Ойын-сауық

Mary Lou Retton sits down exclusively with ET's Deidre Behar at home in Texas to discuss her recovery from a near-death illness, seven months later. The Olympic gymnast tears up as she explains her battle, why she was without insurance and why her daughters set up a GoFundMe to pay for her care.

Yes Health insurance expensive in America but many of the working poor and lower middle class people in this country struggling who earn a little too much or don't want to have to sell their home and don't want to get the state run Insurance aren't asking people for GoFundMe money . That's why so many people were outraged .

I liked her a lot back then but did you see the house she had in Houston she could have gotten an insurance but obviously just didn't want to and then I think for her family to beg for money on the GoFundMe was not a good idea I mean if they want to raise money maybe they should have had a benefit dinner and fundraiser instead of expecting the general population to pay her medical bills when she lived so well unlike most of those people of the general public .

Indeed it needs dismantling. When I was younger, several decades ago, medical care as well as health insurance were so sooooo much better. Even out of pocket care could be “affordable” with a payment plan. Now it’s a mess. Now we have mindless idiots behind a desk, someone who doesn’t know you, doesn’t care about you, has never seen you (nor will they ever), getting to decide whether or not a test, procedure, or prescription should be covered. My friend has breast cancer and literally had to wait for insurance to approve chemo. They had to push off her chemo start date because of not having approval. To say I’m livid about that happening to her is an understatement. I have heard recently, through people I know personally, that the healthcare is amazing in Germany and also Croatia. Because they want to fix you, ONE TIME. Not like here where, example, if you are suspected of having ruptured discs, you must follow an established protocol. You have to go through minimum 6 weeks (WEEKS!) of PT before consideration will be given for an mri or procedure such as epidural injection. Doctors are not being allowed to treat their patients in the best and fastest way. It’s crazy. Anyway, I’m sorry for the rant. We are going backwards on so many things. I wish the best for Mary Lou, and her beautiful family. Take care everyone! ♥️

I had a serious viral pneumonia several years back. Never having smoked or had any lung problems it was quite terrifying. Went home on oxygen for a few weeks, had to get PT just to get my strength back. Coughed for 6 months afterward. And mine was not nearly as bad as Mary Lou’s. Not being able to catch your breath is probably one of the most anxiety producing symptoms you can experience. Pneumonia leaves your lungs scarred and you must be forever diligent about avoiding germs and sick people. Covid was especially terrifying since my lungs probably couldn’t take it. I really feel for Mary Lou and send her prayers for a full recovery. That people could resent a national treasure in her time of need, is incomprehensible to me. Blessings Mary Lou 💗🙏🏻✝️👼🏻

People can be so ignorant. It’s because they feel she has assets and money that she should pay her own bills, but that’s not the case with some athletes. They’re struggling once they reach 45 yrs old most of them. They’re pushed out of the way to make room for the up-and-coming younger ones. And like Mary Lou said that speaking engagements stopped during Covid and if you don’t have a nice cushion to fall back on, Covid made it so hard for so many people. I’m happy she’s receiving some financial help from the public.

Hi, I’m wondering if Mary Lou has looked into the disease Lymphangioleiomyomatosis? Or LAM for short. It’s a very rare genetic disease that almost primarily affects women, and is often under-diagnosed, or mis-diagnosed (especially as pulmonary fibrosis and similar diseases) as other things. I was diagnosed 3 years ago and doing very well so far, but the disease usually eventually affects the lungs and causes many of the symptoms she has been having. It’s so rare that most doctors aren’t even aware it exists, therefore often not even on their radar when diagnosing lung diseases. I’m hoping she sees this or someone who knows her does and suggests looking into this disease as there are medications (and specialists across the country) that can help manage it.

Ms. Mary Lou! I am 52 and was recently diagnosed with the “mystery illness”, Chronic Lyme Disease which was very hard to diagnose, as most doctors are not looking for it or even accept that it exists. Chronic Lyme is a vector borne disease and the culprit of a vast number of symptoms and the imitator of many other diseases. It is known to affect lungs as well as heart, thyroid and brain. Its symptoms vary from patient to patient with different scales and target of organs. Tests are mostly inadequate and not everyone remembers getting bit by tick or develop the bullseye rash associated with it. I am praying for you! May the Spirit of the Lord Christ Jesus bring you answers, endurance and healing.

Very best wishes for Mary Lou Reton’s full recovery. The real scandal is not a Go Fund Me Page created to help her. The real scandal is that no family in America should go bankrupt from a medical crisis. No American Family should be fighting a serious illness without enough financial resources to pay for it. As a country we must do better to bring medical care to everyone who needs it.

I have adored her since she showed us her grit in 1984. She has always been humble, grateful, and such a role model. It pained me to hear her say "at the height of my fame" Marylou you were just a kid when your fame was at it's height. You are an extraordinary woman and so many of us still admire you. Hang in there, we are all still rooting for you and your daughters were raised well.

Praying that her health continues to improve and for healing of her lungs. My mother had pneumonia twice and has chronic asthma. She almost had to get put on a ventilator almost two years ago. I think it's environmental what Mary Lou and what my mother went through. My mother is doing much better, but I always have to keep a close eye on her when she has problems with her breathing. Bless your heart MaryLou ❤️ I just got over pneumonia…again. My 4th time. I’m 68 years old. Each time has been different. This time it came out of nowhere. It hit me hard. I took a job in January at a Driving School to help support myself. I missed over a month of school due to being so sick and weak, also so short of breath. The Dr warned me it was going to take awhile for me to bounce back. WOW, was he right. I feel horrible for you… I’m SO happy you pulled through this. I guess one night I was having a conversation with my late cousin who’d passed away over 2 years ago. I was talking out loud in the dark in the middle of the night…🤣. I can laugh about it now. My youngest had come home to take me to Urgent Care and there they did a chest x-ray and prescribed 2 different antibiotics. She’s the one that overheard me talking, and got out of bed and asked me who I was talking to… I said “John”. We were all very close to him; we all miss him so much 🙏🏻❤️

I can so relate Mary Lou especially when you said it’s more discouragement than anything. A year ago this coming August I was bent over and sneezed and my whole life changed. I thought I just put my back out or sprained the muscles and figured I’d be laying low at the most a week. Over the years I sprained the muscles and bounced back. Realizing this was a whole new ballgame after two weeks and being in severe pain hardly being able to move. At Christmas I was diagnosed with five compression fractures. Long story short I couldn’t do anything. Just taking a shower was overwhelming. I’m athletic also and have been a runner my whole life and I’m older than you. Five grown beautiful kids grandkids retired. My life was full with gardening and you know just on the go and loved being active! And then boom! Like I lost my identity. Soo frustrated, mad, broken, discouraged. I have always been healthy and I just couldn’t accept the fact that I was practically bed ridden. I’m a strong spirit filled believer and I would and still do pray and ask God why now? I’ve never blamed him and I have to trust and believe he will get me through. I’m grateful that I’m not paralyzed. I’m way better than I was at even three months ago and this has also affected my breathing. I will definitely keep you in my prayers that God continually keeps healing you. For faith in knowing it’s going to get better and for peace as we both walk this journey one day at a time. Romans 8:28 🩵

I am a paraplegic and became an OT school. I live very frugally so I can afford to pay $1,700 a month for my health coverage. If I can do that, maybe she should consider it as well.
