yep! she should have found the person before the flight and asked, asked the flight personnel, or simply booked it that way in the reservation!!! She just assumed she would get her way and went ahead and did it without permission. They say "better to ask for forgiveness than permission" but not in this situation!

I was once asked by a guy to swap my prepaid aisle seat with a middle seat so he could sit with his girlfriend. I said “sure…for fifty bucks” which is about what I paid for the pre-selection. He said that was ridiculous and after a little back and forth he called me a sucker for paying it. I just said I’m the sucker sitting next to your girlfriend and you’re the guy who just confirmed it’s not worth fifty bucks.

Yeah, given that she's lazy enough not to book in advance to select an entire row, and is selfish enough to think she just unilaterally swap a -worst, least expensive- middle seat for the -best, most expensive- window seat, hoping that "it's easier to get forgiveness than permission" would pay off (probably again after many other times), tells me she's not a great person. What an airline bumps people or change their seat that’s not planning errors. Airlines are supposed to say families together, especially with underage children which under 16 is still under age. I was flying american years back and a lady asked me to switch seats so she could sit next to her daughter I said as long as its an aisle she said of course and pointed to seat directly in front of mine, I got up switched and then another person came up to the seat and said its theirs the woman had of course lied and hers was the middle seat (5.5 hrs from lax to mco) amazingly a flight attendant had watched the whole episode and promptly marched me up to first class!!!!!!!! Win win

As a flight attendant. I applaud her. Yes queen. 💗💕✈️ ITS HER SEAT. She doesn’t have to switch her window seat!

You guys Got it all wrong. Where I come from we go out of our way to help mothers and children. Blonde lady is an evolving Karen. She isn’t full blown Karen yet, but soon enough she’ll be in a fast food restaurant blowing up the workers bc she has only had “90 minutes of sleep” or is working on a “big presentation”. Her issues supersede everyone else, the definition of a Karen.

I have claustrophobia and need to sit in the front seat. I always book early to secure that seat. During a recent 2-hour flight, a couple (around 50 years old) asked me to switch seats with them so they could sit together. The seat they wanted me to switch to was in the third row and an aisle seat. They had received an upgrade, while I had paid the full amount for my seat. I couldn't say no because I felt guilty declining their request. However, from now on, I will be able to assert myself and say no. Thank you for the encouragement.

Good for you about realizing next time you will stand up for yourself. Sometimes it takes instances like these for us to realize we can say no!! People catch you off guard on the plane, and honestly, seat switching shouldn’t really be allowed. I would never ask anyone to switch seats with me because I well book in advance to get the seat I want or I pay extra for the seat. I think people assume that they can switch seats on the plane and don’t think it’s a big deal.

Years back I flew overseas on a 7 hour flight with my daughter. We could not get seats together. It never occurred to me to ask someone to switch their seat so I could sit with her. It was our problem for booking late. I had the window & she had the aisle in the row behind me & opposite. I told her you’re close by if you need anything. I was surprised when the fellow beside me offered to switch with her. It was a nice gesture & he kept his aisle seat but I never expected him or anyone to switch seats. My thought is when we book late it is our problem. No one should have to sacrifice their seat for our mistakes.

I read a comment once where a man paid for the front seat for the extra leg room. He was asked by the man next to him if he'd switch seats with his wife, who was several rows back. His reasoning was because his wife had their baby with her and needed the extra room. He said, no, I'm tall & paid for this space. If she needs more room to be comfortable, why haven't YOU switched seats with her? He didn't like that answer!😂

She is a mom. People are missing the whole picture. She was panicking some. She was hoping she could get a swap. To me, she should have swapped with the older sibling or just watch a movie or something.

This happened to my family a few months ago. We were returning from vacation when a woman and her family decided to take our three airplane seats. I calmly explained to her, that they were our seats which we paid for when we purchased our tickets (we always purchase our seats when we purchase our tickets). She and her family refused to move, we had to call the flight attendant who then had to threaten to call security to get the family to move. She did not want her seats which were in the back of the airplane (our seats were in the front). She claimed that her travel agent told her she could sit anywhere on the airplane. She was very angry. Some people believe that they can take whatever they want whenever they want; as if the world revolves around them. I am happy you did not give in to her and you did not have to explain to her why you wanted the seat, you paid for it, so you were entitled to sit there.

I agree, but you should not assume a child "looks" old enough to do something. Kids can have unseen issues, like autism, that could affect how they act or need to be treated long beyond how they may look for their age. Clearly that wasn't the case here, just saying, we can't assume someones abilities based on "looks." If that was this womans issue she most certainly would have ensured she was sitting with her kids. The mother in this case was acting entitled assuming she will just figure it all out on the plane, that her poor planning or not wanting to pay for seat priority could be someone elses problem.

If the children had special needs the parent can indicate that when booking and there are airline protocols to ensure they are together. It isnt a passengers or flight attendants responsibility. The seat was paid for and the woman had. a right to sit in her seat regardless of the kids.

Years ago I was returning from Europe to the US solo; I was in a window seat on the side. A couple in their late 50s nicely asked if I would switch my seat so they could sit together, they pointed further back where the lady's seat was.. And I was way too kind (and plain stupid) to agree without checking out her seat first. For the next 10 hours I was in the back of the plane in the middle section with a loud multi-kid family (like, 10 of them) occupying the entire row behind me, and one of their toddlers kicking my seat non-stop. NEVER again. 😂

Maybe but I had a 14 year old who got nervous when he learned that we were not sitting next to each other and wanted me to switch our seats. We were sitting in aisle seats in the same row. When we got on he said that he had not understood that. Anyway my point is yes she wanted it for herself but had reason to think the children especially the 12 year old would like it better. The 15 year old was totally embarrassed by her presumption and attempt to make it look like she was put out on her children's behave.

we are a family of 3, 2 adults and a child, we always pay for seats together so we can sit together, fed up of people thinking they are entitled to stuff because they have kids. No it was your choice to have kids, so you need to pay for the associated costs

It's quite simple: "Your children have no comforts that I need to accommodate. I owe you and your children nothing. When you are old, your children will be there for you and you only. I gain nothing from this uneven transaction."

Switching paid seats is a mutual agreement not a demand insistence or dictate. People like her need to be fined by the airline for theft and causing others discomfort annoyance and trouble.

Some people's sense of entitlement is astounding. If you want to sit next to your kids, you book seat together in advance. Duh!

Some people with children may be flying for medical reasons, to see a Dr. in another state. Those people may not have money to get their own tickets., so they can't choose. It won't be obvious. Assuming peoples intentions and situation is ignorant.

That happened to me both ways on my last vacation. It's infuriating that these people assume everyone is okay switching with them just because they didn't buy their ticket early enough to get the seat they wanted. You paid for and picked the seat you wanted. Don't let anyone guilt you into changing if you don't want to. Good job standing up for yourself!!

Happened to me on my business class flight, with a boyfriend wanting to sit with his girlfriend. I had paid a lot of money to go from London to Sydney, and on the second leg of the flight, I’d booked the pod in the exact orientation I wanted, as some are right next to the aisle and I wanted window, which is more private. I ended up feeling so bad, as the stewards weren’t exactly helpful and I made it obvious I didn’t want to move. I did move, begrudgingly. That flight cost £7000! And, I ended up in a crappy seat. My own fault. I was tired.

I had a very similar thing happen. Long haul flight and I had deliberately paid extra, ahead of time, to pick an aisle seat, because I had an upset stomach and it's super stressful to have to wake people up to go to the toilet multiple times. A mum in a middle seat one row over goes "hey, would you mind switching with me so I can sit next to my daughter?" (12-ish year old sitting in the middle seat next to me) I replied apologetically that I was sorry but I needed an aisle seat. Did not elaborate because why tell the whole plane I have diarrhoea?? Woman gets huffy with me and goes on about how it's not fair, the airline didn't put them together, it's a long flight... I reply sorry, I deliberately booked this aisle seat. "Fine!" She says "Then I hope you know that you're responsible for my daughter for the duration of this flight!" I just smiled and nodded, because a) no way, that ain't legal, b) she's 12, she'll be fine, and c) you're just trying to get a rise out of me at this point 😂 Mum called a flight attendant and complained, to whom I also explained the situation. Eventually after a lot of fuss they managed to find a THIRD person who was prepared to do a 3-way swap, so that I could sit in ANOTHER aisle seat and mum could have her way. I agreed to move at that point because all I really wanted was an aisle seat, not a war 😂🤦‍♀️

If you want to pick your seat pay. If you don’t want to pay don’t gripe & expect others to accommodate you. I was sitting in the back of a flight & upon exiting had a woman get mad because I didn’t barge my way out. Instead I was waiting patiently for my turn & told her if she was in a hurry (she had no connection just complaining about work in the morning which I had as well) she should’ve paid for a closer seat. We exited & I made the mistake of walking first. My thirteen year old daughter that looks 10 told me that the pig pushed her to the side & barged in front of her. If I knew at the time I would’ve called security. But daughter didn’t tell me until later. Grinds my gears how entitled & rude people get.

I had booked my flight 9 months in advance AND paid the extra fee for upgraded seat. When I got to my seat upon boarding a woman was sitting in my aisle seat. She refused to move. I asked for the flight attendant, and guess what? The flight attendant said to me, there is an aisle seat in the back row (next to the restrooms), could you accommodate this woman? I stood my ground, but both the flight attendant and the woman rolled their eyes at me, with the woman saying “You have a problem, I feel sorry for you!” I post this because you cannot depend on the flight attendants to help you obtain the seat you paid for. By the way, I had paid the big bucks for row 6, aisle seat.

I had the same thing happen to me. A man with a thick eastern European accent stood over me saying over and over that I was sitting next to his wife and I needed to switch my aisle seat for his middle seat a few rows back. Um, no, I don't. I paid extra to pick an aisle seat because I get claustrophobic. It was just a 2 hour flight. Did he really need to sit next to her? The flight attendant was of NO help at all. Finally someone else grew tired of the man's whining and did some switching so they could sit together. It was so irritating to deal with especially since I paid more to reserve that seat.

I had this happen to me on my last flight. I was shocked that the person was mad that I wanted my window seat I had paid for specifically. She cursed to her husband the entire flight. Oh well, to bad, next time do what others do and PAY FOR THE SEAT YOU WANT. So over these people.

The thing that always gets me is somehow these people always manage to board during pre-boarding even though they don’t have strollers or something that normally qualifies you for pre-boarding. Like they know the f’d up by buying basic economy that doesn’t let them choose a seat, so now their plan is get on board, take whatever they like, and prepare to guilt trip anyone who insists on sitting in their specifically chosen seat which they paid extra for.

@@omgyeti2049 IIRC there’s usually something on your ticket that says whether you’re qualified for pre-boarding, I don’y think you can just sneak into it. Just like it says (at least w/ the airlines I’ve flown) whether or not you are allowed a carry-on bag.

My husband and I pay to PICK our seats due to his disability. No way would we switch. If mom is so concerned about her teenage kids she should have paid to be seated together. Easy fix for an easy problem!

You do not need to explain yourself. You purchased the seat. It's yours.

This woman keeps apologizing and explaining herself why she wants her seat. I would have just said “ lady, move your in my seat “. No need for explanations or anything. If the other lady didn’t make previous seat reservations for all three of her family, that’s her problem !!

This woman should not be apologizing. It was rude of the mom with the kids to be cheap and try to seat scalp and think someone would just assume the responsibility of switching. No. I get motion sickness too and always need a window. I pay extra for a window seat/seat selection too. The fact that she copped an attitude as a response says everything about how the mom flying with kids is. What a poor example of parenting: terrible role model for her kids.

The kids were already assigned next to me per the airline, but we paid extra to ensure my mom and husband were next to us as well. Not always a guarantee, unfortunately. We flew last month w/ our 9 month old and American Airlines still split up our family the night before without warning and refused to put us together bc the flight was full. The only reason we got from the airline was that the plane changed and the system wasn't "smart enough to keep families together". We purchased more and were still booted...so keep an open mind here lol

@@kristhaaan yea we did & my husband has really good status for priority with American Airlines (still didn't matter), We had never known it to be a thing either and we were so upset and surprised that the airline couldn't do a thing about it. They empathized with us and agreed it was wrong but they didn't do anything about it. We even paid for the more legroom seats, picked a window so that I could hold our baby to sleep and we still got split up, even with an infant.

That should not have been made her problem. Mom sit back, you can see your kids. See and converse with the kids sitting behind them.

I hate that the storyteller felt the need to list her reason for not giving away her seat. No is a complete sentence.

A man did this to me years ago. I was on a work trip and had booked a window seat, got to my seat and man was sitting there. I politely told him that he was in my seat, and he said “well you can sit in mine”, which was the middle seat in the next aisle. I again, politely told him that I didn’t want his middle seat, I wanted my window seat. He ignored me, and probably thought I would cave since I was a young 23yr old and he was a grown man. Nope, my parents didn’t raise me without a backbone, I clearly and loudly told him that I would go get the flight attendant so that she could assist him to his assigned seat. He huffed and puffed, called me B, but got out of my seat. People have some nerve.

Good for you in standing up for yourself...we TEACH people how to treat us and what we will and will not accept. Just last week I went to the movies...ONE aisle seat left ..in the back (in the wheelchair /companion section) which was perfect. I get there and a woman is in my seat, asks me to verify then acknowledges that someone was in her seat so she sat in mine. Respectfully, asked her if she wanted me to get attendant to assist in getting HER seat (she was older). She accepted my offer but by the time I returned she was already informing the person in her seat (aisle row in front of me; their seat was 5 seats in) It worked out and hopefully showed the original seat takers "folks PICK their seats for a reason" !

Stop explaining why you didn’t trade. You paid for the ticket, she was wrong.

I pick my seat, I sit in it. No discussion needed. If you're in my seat that I picked and.paid for then you move. PERIOD. Easy. Someone has asked me to switch more than 5x in 40 yrs and those events all went undocumented. So whats the big deal anyway. She stood up for herself, WE ALL SHOULD.

Frequent flyer here. You did good. People need to pay properly ahead of time to get the seats they want. Don’t let the Mom make her problem into your problem.

I think part of the problem is way back in the old days before all this controversy of everything we did, and said, when you booked a flight, you automatically assumed your whole family was gonna be sitting with you, but unless the planes have five seats across which they don’t anymore when we went to Florida years ago, I sat with my older sonmy ex-husband sat with my other two sons the robe behind us in the middle. No biggie.

Just today I was sitting in my window seat by the wing, just the way I like it, and the person next to me proceeds to reach over me and pull the shades down to BOTH windows beside me. For exactly the reasons this woman mentioned I have a penchant for window seats, so whoever is next to me needs to deal with the shades being up or down. You can politely ask, but don’t reach over because you can’t deal with the light. Choose an aisle seat next time.

Don’t you love the “I thought we could switch seats” without having even spoken to her. 🙄Yeah, that’s rude.

Believing one side without observing the situation at least on video is very foolish! Every side is going to present the situation in the light most favorable to them. For all I know, this entitled selfish woman might be lying, abusing the fact that the whole encounter was not taped on video… I would not believe a single word coming out of her mouth. She has a vested interest! Use critical thinking, people! Don't just believe somebody because they say so... 🙄🤯🙄🙄🙄 Do you know how easy it is to deceive people today, especially the gullible and naïve Americans? It's not even funny.

It's the opposite so what I do at work sometimes. I ask for a day off like last minute, but I can ask. If I get a no, so be it. Same here, she can ask. But if you don't get the answer you want, deal with it.

Yeah like sit in your seat and wait for the person to come to their seat and ask them nicely. If they say no respect it and I can understand being annoyed at the airline if they did plan ahead and it was a mistake but that’s assuming you did plan ahead and speak to the gate agent. I believe where this got rude was that she was already sitting in this woman’s seat thinking it’s a done deal.

As a parent, I double check BEFORE the flight to make sure I am seated with my child. If not, I go to the counter, asked to be moved together because I have a small child, and everything is right again. It really is that simple. This type of thing should be taken care of before the flight.

It's nice to run into this behavior. It is a reminder not to do it to anyone else. People are way too comfortable.

I had a very different experience, taking my aisle seat, and finding myself sitting next to a five -year-old in the middle seat, with her mother in the aisle seat directly behind. The mother apologized for not having her daughter next to her and hoped the child would be no trouble to me! The little girl turned out to be a well-behaved, delightful seat-mate. It was a pleasure to meet a confident, happy child and the mother who was raising her.

Yeah, she was probably trying the "It's better to ask for forgiveness than permission" thing, but in this case, it actually would have been better or at least more polite to ask for permission.

I was once told, and I don't know if it's true, that if you switch seats and the plane crashes, it's more difficult to find your body if you are not where you should be. Other than that, if you cannot organize your seating before you get on the plane, sucks to be you, don't bother other people.

As a flight attendant myself, I completely agree with your stance.

Stand your ground folks, been flying for over sixty years, never ran into this attitude until just recently, lot’s of self entitled narcissistic behavior, do not bend, it just encourages them, sad times we’re living in😢

@@MikeDonaldson-eh2ru I have a medical issue that requires very frequent rest room visits, on two separate occasions I have individuals that disrespected my legitimately purchased assigned seat, which required paying an additional fee! This is just another example of societal decline in basic manners, plan ahead don’t create unnecessary problems for other travelers! Nothing more to say!

Social decline comes from lack of decorum from leaders, and manners in public. I'm 50 and remember the times when ppl said good morning, evening, and just polite mannerisms, thank yous, and so on. Today ppl are extremely rude to others, and most of the time ignore others completely, and stay on their devices. So as much as I blame parents, it's actually society that eventually makes it's own standards of behaviors now, and you could be the most polite person in the world, but the world doesn't care and will break you down piece by piece

This happened to me a few years ago. I got upgraded to business with a window seat with no one next to me and I was so looking forward to finally get a good rest when a guy stood up and asked me if I could swap seats with him and let him and his boyfriend seat the both of them as they were seated a few rows behind in separate alley seats. I also really enjoy travelling on a window seat and I said no to their alley seats. The guy got really angry with me and called me a sour bitch! I am glad I kept my seat!!!

No explanation needed. They were 15 and 11. If it's her seat, it's her seat. The entitlement in this country anymore is beyond the pale.

I had this happen to me. A mother wanted to sit by her son and wanted me to move back fifteen rows to her seat. I explained I had paid extra for an aisle seat and for my seat near the front and I wasn't moving. Unfortunately I was given the cold shoulder by the flight attendant ,who felt I was wrong. The flight attendant even made a snide remark upon departure from the plane.I had booked the ticket/seat two months in advance so I wasn't moving.

I'd have said to her (as nicely as possible) that I paid to have a specific seat so I don't get motion sick, and that I don't think the people sitting to the sides of HER assigned seat behind them, would appreciate me yakking all over them during takeoff and/or landing, and that for future trips, now she knows SHE needs to book seats together when traveling if she wants to sit with her kids... but that they seem old enough to yell back one row to their mom if they have any problems. Then I'd laugh so she knew I was being lighthearted, but still without being bullied into switching, because she failed to plan appropriately. As the saying goes: "failure to plan on your part does NOT constitute an emergency on my part!" (of course, I'd only say that last part to her if she continued to push)

Iam glad you put you first. Especially with her expecting it. Also if it is that important to a person to sit with their child or someone else then book ahead of time!

What gets me every-time is that, those people want to ‘switch’ seats will always go after nicer seats. I have never once seen them offer their better seats to someone 🤷🏻‍♀️

I did it once. it was a small aircraft with only three seats in a row, a single seat on one side and two on the other. I had the window seat and my husband had the single seat on the other side of the aisle, and I asked the man in the aisle seat next to my window seat to switch with my husband. I would consider the single seat, which is both aisle and window at the same time, to be the more desirable seat to somebody traveling alone. And he agreed to the trade. Since then, however, I have paid more attention to our boarding passes prior to boarding to see if we are seated together. My husband is deaf and depends on me for communication, and I will inform the gate agent of our need to sit together. And the seat selection business at the time of booking the tickets doesn't work. People who say "I paid for this seat" don't know what they are talking about; airlines switch equipment (aircraft) all the time, and the different aircraft have different floor plans.

On a very long flight I booked an aisle and a window for my daughter and I knowing that she would sleep for the majority of the flight in the window seat (which she was very good at - I would suggest she was 11 or 12 and very independent). When a older man approached the seats (knowing he was in the middle seat) he demanded I move to the middle to be next to my daughter. I said it was fine - that she would be sleeping and we would not be talking or disturbing him and if she did want to talk we would head to the back of the plane together to stretch our legs (like I said - this was to Australia so a long long flight). He refused and said I needed to take the middle seat. Annoyingly I gave up because I did not want him to be horrible to both of us from the middle seat for 10 plus hours. Honestly though - just get online and secure your seats. I got next to no sleep at all because not only did he take the aisle seat he did the standard male move of taking both armrests for himself. So annoying.

I got seat scalped 13 years ago and I'm still mad I didn't stand up for myself. The seat they stole was at the front of the plane, so there was no overhead space left and the airline forced me to check my carry-on bag--and then lost it. I still despise the man who did this to me and wish I'd made him give me my seat back. This woman absolutely did the right thing. She won't have to be bitter about it more than a decade later like I am!

All you need to do is call a steward/stewardess and tell them you found your Paid seat, but the woman sitting in it...needs help finding her assigned seat. No argument, no whining, no manipulation...the passenger will be shown her/his seat IMMEDIATELY. Dont interact with con artist or narcissistic fools...let attendant get their sneaky arse out!

@@gabye. No - when things are brought up, you are right back in that situation. Sometimes because of trauma in your past, or just sometimes that is how our mind works. Regardless, I have the same thing and I usually get angry, sad, happy all over again, depending on a situation!

I don’t see the controversial situation. She bought a seat and she should be allowed to sit in it for whatever reason she wants.

I’ve flown with my kids their entire lives. To avoid this issue I always paid to pre book our seats so we were all together. I’ve never ever felt that anyone else owed me their seat so I just simply made sure that we prebooked our seats.

15 and 11 years old? I flew from Australia to New Zealand and back in 1983 on my own at 9 years of age. I'm sure they were fine with their mum sitting 30cm behind them. F&%king hell!

She didn't ask and assumed you would accept the decision she made. How rude and entitled and arrogant. Not exactly a good role model for her children. This will just teach them that they can do what they want without consequences.
