Tuba Skinny confronted by N.O. Police ("Crazy Chords")

Музыка

After much delay and confusion the City of New Orleans has returned Royal Street to a pedestrian mall as of April 26, 2022. However, there is still pressure from certain business owners on Royal St. to ban the pedestrian mall so the struggle will continue. EMAIL: mayor@nola.gov

From Canada: Firstly I am shocked by the rudeness and arrogance of the police. Siren blazing, no tact, no willingness to listen or resolve the issue. Bad publicity for visiting the U.S ..and there's Tuba Skinny, ambassadors for a trip to the States. Like many people overseas, my dream is to visit N.O just to experience them playing on the street . A daily dose of Tuba Skinny got me through out long cold lock- downs in Canada. ( Had me dancing in the kitchen) The city needs needs a golden plaque in recognition of their extraordinary musicianship. The city should PAY them for the tourist publicity it gives to New Orleans not limit them. THANK YOU ❤️❤️❤️ Tuba Skinny. You are fantastic!

It is no exaggeration to say that the beautiful atmosphere which comes through in the videos of them playing in this location have persuaded my wife and me to visit the city (from England) next year. New Orleans has something extremely precious in these performances, something which other cities would dearly love to have, and which deserves to be protected and nurtured. A city ordinance has been in effect since 1971 designating Royal St. as a pedestrian mall closed to traffic during certain hours. Bands have traditionally used this time for busking. After the Hard Rock Hotel collapse in 2019 traffic was rerouted to Royal Street 24 hours a day. The hotel has been demolished yet for some reason the city has not returned Royal St. to a pedestrian mall per the 1971 ordinance (Sec. 154-608, Vieux Carre' Malls). Several bands decided to play on Royal today in protest. Tuba Skinny was set up in a no parking space and traffic continued interrupted while they played (Royal is a 1 way street). You will see this in my other videos and at the end of this video when traffic passes after the policeman drives off. I wish I could afford the trip from California to hear them in person and join the fun. People were dancing to the music and having a congenial good time, when a police car blared right into the middle with screaming siren. A cop raged up to the band, being unbearably aggressive and rude. Any attempt to engage in polite conversation with him he countered by shouting it down. See for yourself.

My family has been busking in the quarter for 3 generations and I was taught by the older guys that the cops are just relaying a message. If you have an issue then you need too figure out a way to get your message straight to the city officials. Maybe it’s time for us musicians to second line to City Hall again

True Mike. The police officer is just doing the bidding of the politicians who sign his paycheck. He was firm but professional. However, he was wrong about the band obstructing traffic. Dear Senator Kennedy, You are the best thing to hit the government since canned beer. There is a music group that has helped to keep a New Orleans tradition alive named "Tuba Skinny". To say the least, they are exceptional musicians and represent what is best about your fine State. One specific tradition that had existed for years was that Royal Street was a pedestrian thruway but in recent years, it has been opened up to traffic. This greatly hinders the opportunity for your State's finest musicians to display their talents and make a few dollars at the same time. Would you please consider advising Mayor Cantrell to close Royal Street to vehicular traffic which would help to re-establish one of New Orleans' sacred traditions? I thank you for your time and anticipated courtesies in this matter.

I am not familiar with the city of New Orleans; Unfortunately. So I can't have an opinion on how City Hall manages traffic. However, I am familiar with the fine street musicians of New Orleans through the Internet and Tuba Skinny is the crown jewel of them all. Therefore, I have a very strong opinion on their talent, virtuosity and the unique experience of watching them living the music and taking me on their wings with every note and every syncopation. Every single one of them. I hope the Mayor understands that these musicians serve, preserve and spread a very important, fundamental I would dare say, part of the American musical tradition. I hope that she realizes that New Orleans jazz is part of world music. It touches everybody around the globe. More inportantly, I hope that she can feel the music and appreciate the art like the rest of us around the world which apparently is not the case. What's the problem? Bar owners on Royal Street? Some other kind of pressure on the Mayor? Last but not least, if the Mayor knew how many times doctors like myself tuned in to the street musicians of New Orlens during the COVID 19 epidemic to listen to the uplifting music to have some strength restored to our souls to keep going, maybe, just maybe she might change her mind. If you ever find yourselves in Greece people, you're welcome to block my street all you want. Just keep playing. I'll pick up the tickets for obstructing traffic.

The officer was wrong and I love how when confronted with the written law he ignores the person and just keeps repeating himself like a child that doesn’t get their way, hilarious. And beings they are public servants “they Are Supposed to enforce” such written laws not interpret them (thats the judicial systems job). And I also love how police today demand respect but give None and I noticed the other officer was just stared at them (almost like he was hoping and waiting for someone to do something “they consider” a threat. My wife’s grandfather & father were career police officers and retired with honors and was not only respected in the community but (her grandfather) was awarded for never having to resort to violence or having to pull his service revolver. He remarked that 95 outta 100 situation situation can be talked down without escalating it further. It’s a shame that today’s officers seem to almost look for situations & for them to escalate, rather than being neutral and understanding. Like they have something to prove(mind you not All of them are like that but I’ll say 3/4’s are). That’s not how you get respect. All I saw in this video was a bullies picking on every day people trying to spread a little joy in what would be a otherwise depressing and dark city scape (without them). They may have to have someone for security & or a law expert with them wen they play. Because their now marked and will probably be singled out everytime they play. A shame we have to have security to protect us from our own so called public security. Good luck tuba skinny and keep playing no matter what the bullies (political & in uniform) say. 👍👍😎

Dear Mike Smith, You couldn't have said it more succinctly, congratulations. This is a person who is used to addressing everyone all day long about anything and everything, if they are then addressed on their behavior then they have a very hard time digesting it. This behavior may have been possible 50 years ago, but it is quickly forgotten that the citizen has not stood still in his or her knowledge, and also that of the legislation. I'm surprised that they both don't get more intrusive and come so close to you that you automatically start making a defensive gesture, this intimidation technique is very well known to me. Here in Rotterdam I have seen them apply the technique from very close by, in one they had made a mistake because he was aware of the trick and stood still with his hands in his pockets. I then asked a police officer standing outside the circle, aren't your colleagues trying to provoke something? He didn't react to that, but when they left he spoke briefly with the highest in rank, who then looked in my direction, thought for a few seconds and then decided to leave. Many here are falling over the attitude of the law enforcement officer, and I think quite rightly that he doesn't care about what's written in the rules but isn't implemented, tells a lot about those at the top who are thus making the failing to comply with rules agreed upon by democracies. It is very similar to what could be heard after 1945 during the Nuremberg trial,, order is order or rather Befehl ist Befehl.

And I'm just betting that your wife's Father and Grandfather didn't have to deal with people who thought they had the right to set up a band on the roadway of a city. Times change, there is far less respect for law and order now than anytime in the near past. Music is great, playing it in a proper place would be more respectful of and for everyone! I am sure the Coppers have better things to do than to tell people to move back off the road, sheech! I especially like the trombone player with an attitude deserving of a 3 year old.

  • @pe1agp

@@davidnapemaskwa7251 You are ignoring a very important subject, there is no follow-up to a democratic decision, which means that the executive authority disregards democracy, which tends to move in the direction of communism, if not a dictatorship. I was of the opinion that America wants to stay far away from that. If you feel addressed, it is also your job to address everyone at all times, but prefer not to be addressed yourself. Certainly there is less and I may say much less awe and respect for the police, but you have to earn awe and respect, which you do not get when handing over your certificate. In addition, the citizen is no more the citizen of about 75 years ago, as in this example, the musician is better aware of the state of affairs than he who should know and list it, even if you just wake him or her from the deepest sleep . In that respect, both enforcers still piss and shit in a diaper and are still very far away from being 3 years old, despite or thanks to the impressive car they drive and have to use the siren at all times if necessary, what kind of adolescent behaviour. They not only disgrace themselves, but take the entire enforcement corps with them in their wake, fine colleagues, that will get you far and you can be proud of it. Now I have to mention that in my opinion some of them deserve it, we have vacationed in Florida quite often, usually in the same hotel. During breakfast and sometimes during dinner, enforcers regularly came to eat there. There is nothing wrong with that, they have every right to do so, but most of them radiated such arrogance and they looked at you as if you had just made them an indecent offer when you said good morning or evening to them at the counter. Very unfortunate if you feel so far above the common citizen. Sorry if you feel addressed, but you must have noticed that we live in a completely different time. Have a very nice day
