Wow, thank you so much! One thing we tried to do before visiting was look in the comments section of other Serbian food videos to see what types of foods the LOCALS themselves recommended. What KZreadrs show, and what the locals actually eat can sometimes be quite different. We've gotten so many incredible recommendations from locals on our own videos that we seriously can't wait to go back to Serbia and try all of the things we missed on our first go. Research on the internet an only bring you so far...it's the locals that really know the good spots! If you have any personal recommendations yourself, we'd love to hear em'! We plan to some back and explore the south, in particular. 😃

As someone from Uzice (the city that Komplet Lepinja originates from) I'm glad you decided to try it. Brings a smile to my face. If you ever find yourself near Uzice i recommend stopping by the Suljaga bakery they have been open for more than 100 years and are known for making the best Komplet Lepinja ever.

Basically, Komplet lepinja was invented there, but dude is really offended if you suggest putting meat in there. He says real deal is only egg, kaymak, pork + lamb dip and bread. They have 2 old school bread ovens and they make everything by themselves, really good people.

@@wherearewe-yt as i am from there as well, i can say big up for Šuljaga. no hate here or anything, but we never put meat into this dish. real simple... kajmak at the bottom, scramble an egg into it, put it under a broiler for a few minutes and top it of with pretop (the roast pork or lamb, or ideally mixed drippings). respect for the effort. i hope you truly enjoyed it. come back any time!

The best Serbian food is on south of Serbia. Cities of Niš, Pirot and Leskovac have very food. Probably the best barbecue in the world. Be sure to visit some or all of these cities. The quality and taste of food in Niš and Pirot is at a much higher level than in Belgrade. Enjoy Serbia and have a great time.

We tried all of the most popular Serbian beers we could find, including Lav, but we drank them at home! Haha. We enjoyed all the foods (and beers) we had. We're looking forward to returning some day.

Best Karadjordjeva in Belgrade by far is little outside of city.. About 30 minutes by bus. In Restaurant called Serbia on Ibarska. Trust me, well worth the trip. Huge and insanely delicious

I loved the whole video! As someone born in Serbia, spent whole my life. I'm so proud seeing you enjoy the food I love. I traveled just a bit but I felt so spoiled that I couldnt wait enough to get back home to eat the food I like. I guess there are also downsides of serbian food.. Everything is kinda fatty and high-calorie, so you basically need to make sure you're having that proactive life 😂 The other thing to consider, some meals taste better on their own without any sauces and side dishes, It might be my personal preference but yeah, worth taking a shot 😅 Much love from Serbia! 🥰

@@wherearewe-yt No Worries Yall did everything right, Cevape is supposed to be eaten with Kajmak, Onion and optional Ajvar. the only thing that was weird to me (which is not your guyses fault) is that Pljeskavica usually only eaten with either Pavlaka (Sour Creme) or Kajmak. i guess its just a new thing there, havent been in Serbia for years. Thank you both for putting in the research and appreciating the real Serbia normal Tourists wouldnt be able to show Grüße ausm Land der Finanzamt Mafia 😂

@@wherearewe-yt regarding ćevapčići vs ćevapi - obviously it is the same thing , it just became easier for some people to use shorter version , but since you mentioned that you are from Germany - here is the fun fact : Bundeswehr has Cevapcici with rice as one of the versions of their pre packed field rations for soldiers .

That's really interesting, the soldiers must be happy about that. In Germany you can also get ćevapčići with rice as a pre-made microwavable meal. I used to buy it all the time, but it's nowhere near as good as the real deal 😆😊

Fun fact about karadjordjeva snicla. It was created by a chef called Milovan Mića Stojanović. He used to be the personal chef of president Josip Broz Tito. He actually made it by accident, one of the foreign guests at some official dinner with Tito asked for chicken Kiev, but they ran out of chicken that night so Mića improvised and created the dish. He named it after the Karadjordjevo hunting grounds, which was the place where Tito went to hunt. Mića is still alive and owns a small restaurant in Zemun, it is called "Mićina Domaća Kujna". He doesn't cook anymore due to old age, but his son runs the kitchen as a chef and Mića often oversees the work. So if you want to try the karadjordjeva at its origin, feel free to visit the place.

😅😅😅 OMG - I MISS SERBIA 😭😭😭 ... Serbian , living in Germany for more then 10 years ( yesss , here I ate some very delicious food too ) BUT some of the Serbian foods are very hard to beat - like Pljeskavica ( or any grilled meat 😋) ... First time I tried Kebab here in Germany I didnt like it - AT ALL 🥴.. Maybe bcs I am very spoiled about meat . Oh , I know what tastes perfectly, like from Heaven... But one should understand that really GREAT FOOD comes from the best ingredients . The thing about Serbia is - we have perfect balance of SUN and enough rain therefore Serbian ingredients are the best one in the world , so its pretty much easy to cook great meals . Once I watched Jamie Oliver who spoke about importance of ingredients and he rated Serbia as A ➕ and particular part of Serbia called Stig , just south of Belgrade around Pozarevac as A ➕ ➕ . He said - the very best ingredients in the world . I know he is right, Im very spoiled 🤷🏻‍♀️

We could definitely taste the quality of the meat in Serbia. I think I said this at least two or three times in the video, but I couldn't help it. 😂 We love kebabs in Gernany as well though! Especially in Berlin, where Anja is from. Nostalgic taste for us! We have had a couple of recommendations for cities in the south to visit for BBQ meat. We will try and come back for those, a few months from now!

@@wherearewe-yt For Pecenje prasetina (roast pork) you can go in BSK in Belgrade or, as many people say, two best restaurants for this kind of food in Serbia: Mali Hrast and Kod postara in city Arandjelovac (close to Belgrade). "Janjetina" (lamb) sa ražnja is best in Jablanica - Bosnia and Herzegovina. If you wonder if it is in Bosnia or is it in Herzegovina😅. It is actualy in Herzegovina. It's on the way from Mostar to Sarajevo.

”Maybe its a nightmare” 🤣🤣🤣 ps. If you ever eat a Karadjordjeva again, try to squeeze some lemon over it - makes it so much tastier with the tartar sauce

You have to shake the yogurt first! Thye cheese in serbian burek (round burek) is called urda - similar to ricotta in Italy.

You have to try "Pečenje" what is the Serbian version of Suckling Pig with some Coleslaw Salat😍. And as first/side dish a good "Čorba" from Chicken/Fish or some Restoraunts even serve Beef Čorba. Of course there is much more like Kačamak, Meso Ispod Sača, etc. Wish you all the best, stay Hungry! ❤😁

We've heard a lot of people mention the suckling pig. We really want to try that since it sounds delicious. Thanks for all the other suggestions as well! We'll definitely try more things next time we are in Serbia 😊

Next time you come, make sure to get a tip from locals about some inns at the outskirts of town! Best places to try traditional Serbian food are usually located in the neighborhoods 8-10km from the city center. They're not very touristy like places in the city center, but the prices are much lower and the food quality higher. And komplet lepinja is definitely to be tried in its origin city Užice! Also, I highly recommend visiting the southern Serbia. As much as Vojvodina has the Austro-Hungarian vibe, the spirit of Osmanic empire can be felt in the south. Also, the food in the south is to die for!

Most people have said that we need to visit the south. I'm really curious to see how the food is going to be different. It was already amazing in Belgrade and the other places we visited in the north so I can't even imagine what it will be like 😊. We'll probably be visiting the South in the summer.

Thanks for saying that! One person in the comments told us this is not what Serbians eat. 🤔 Of course, we know that not everyone eats cevapi and burek everyday, but we attempted to show as many "highlights" of Serbian food as we could. Let us know what we missed, so we know some more foods we should try in the future! 😁

Very nice video, you are really doing great! But as a Serbian guy i would defininetly suggest if you really want to do food tour in Serbia you should start with south cities like Pirot, Niš, Vranje.... and then go to either west or east cites where also its really traditional original food. North has lots of choices to be fair, but the real deal starts down :) All best on your journey

I swear, we've had a few dozen people suggest the south now. We plan to return to Serbia a few months from now to explore that region. We've gotten so many amazing suggestions, I feel like it's a must now! Especially Niš. We've heard it's got the best food! We can't wait to go.

When you asked the guy to add how ever he eats it. Usually in Serbia we use all the toppings if not chargable. 😂 We say chevapchichi as well, but to make it easier for foreigners we use word chevapi. ❤ Tres leches we call here Koh its the old cake recipe here, but not sure if its original or coming from other countries. Its one of those easy cakes that you make with what you have but somehow it become fancy. 😂

Trileće i koh zapravo veze nemaju jedno sa drugim, samo se pogodilo da se slično natapaju mlekom. Dok je koh srpki proizvod, trileće se pravi sa karamelom i potiče od nikaragvanskih urođeničkih naroda, a danas je izuzetno popularan kolač u ovoj zemlji, kao i u Meksiku, Portoriku, Gvatemali i na Kubi.

Ćevap (kebab) is bigger cca 70+ grams, while ćevapčić is half of it and the name is just diminutive.

Yeah, I know what you mean :) Living in Slovakia now, and spending time between Slovakia and Hungary for work. In both, all my friends and colleagues are doing it with palinka/palenka :) I managed to 'teach' few to do it Serbian style, and now I can finally enjoy evenings out without being the only one 'not under the table at 09pm' :D Anyhow, again - amazing video and looking frw to see future adventures of yours :) Cheers guys @@wherearewe-yt

You are doing it right; you eat Burek as you would Pizza. I'm native Serbian/Montenegrin living in the US since the '80s and I miss the Serbian food so much. I can't wait to get there this summer and gobble up all those Serbian delicacies!

Probajte nešto ispod sača, to je zemljani sud koji se prekriva žarom i pepelom, obično je sve u njemu, krompir, šargarepa, povrće i od mesa jagnjetina, jaretina, svinjetina...Dobro došli i prijatno

We'll have to try it! The best rakija we had was probably a house made apricot version that we have in our next video. The sweetness, versus the harshness seems to vary GREATLY...hahaha.

You have to try Serbian snacks and sweets as well. Here are a few suggestions: Smoki, Krem bananica, Jaffa, Medeno srce, Munchmallow, Plazma, Eurokrem, Nela Štark. Whatever you choose, you can't go wrong

I can't believe we managed to leave Serbia without a single hangover. Especially with all of the rakija and Serbian beers we drank. 😂

@@wherearewe-yt Thanks for Promoting Serbia, definitely we have to offer plenty to the tourists... Hospitality, people mostly know English pretty good, if you can visit some cultural landmarks like Vinča, it is the one of oldest settlements in Europe... Its dated 4500 bc.....

@ We never go into a place with a negative mindset because it's absolutely foolish to pre-judge a place and it's people. That being said, we were shocked by just HOW friendly and accommodating Serbian people were. We had so many interactions that were just straight up memorable. The woman who served us our hot rakija, the young bartender who chatted with us about rakija, the lovely woman who sold us vanilice, the man who served us at Cevaplija and asked about our video and subscribed to our channel. We just had so many great interactions - it made our time in Serbia so incredible!

I have to make the pilgrimage to Serbia again (to visit my grandmothers grave). I haven’t been to Belgrade since 1988/89. There are way more restaurants in Belgrade than what I remember. When I was a child I went with my family to Belgrade 1965-1972. Then in my 20’s I visited 1984-1989. I’m from Canada (father Serbian/mother Irish). So I have fond memories of the food & the country. I remember the sour cherries in Serbia… are to die for! If you can eat those (strudel or as a compote) do so. These cherries are unforgettable! I hope to travel again soon.

You really should made the trip! I'm sure it would all feel very nostalgic. There were many great restaurants around. Maybe some from when you were a child still exist! There were many old, traditional restaurants still standing.

Hahaha. Our channel is focused largely around food, for sure. That's what most people want to see! We can see through our analytics which parts of the videos have the highest retention, and it's always when we're showing food. We also love trying local food when we travel!
