"Put simply, R.E.M. wrote ‘Everybody Hurts’ to save people’s lives. Everything about the song was designed to stop teenagers from committing suicide; from the straightforward lyrics to the dramatic string arrangements to the beautiful melody, the song hits directly where it counts - the heart." My bestie died on the 12th April 1997 from cancer aged just 34. She had already chosen this to be played at her funeral months before she died as she knew she was terminal. I sat with my darling friend the night before, she was in a coma in her room at home, and I told her how much I loved her and what she meant to me, fully believing that she would still wake up. Her little 2yr old daughter Grace came into the room and called Mumma, and there was no reaction, and then I knew and started to sob. We came home that night, and we’re coming back the next day and my husband had a phone call and walked over to me and said Cass (her older daughter) had just rung, and I said please don’t say it, I don’t want to hear it!! She had just died and they wanted us there so we got into the car and I was sobbing, and this bloody song was on! I knew it was her, trying to help me, and comfort me but I just cried harder. I sat with her for ages, stroking her hair, talking to her and thanking her for her love and loyalty. This song has come on at various times in my life since, usually when I need her, and I know it’s her. I miss that beautiful girl every day of my life. I love you so much Meredith ❤️

As somebody who has been there, I can tell you that when you are in that place that is so dark, so crushing, the only way you see to get out, is simply to not exist anymore... you *won't* call a crisis line, you *can't*, because you don't see yourself as something worth saving. If you don't get lucky, like I did, and have somebody from outside of your situation intervene directly, you probably won't survive. I nearly didn't. Check in on your friends. Especially the ones you have always seen as strong. I was always the rock, the one who was there for everybody else when they needed somebody. I think knowing that I could break really scared a lot of my friends. I lost quite a few in the years since. The road to recovery is a long, arduous one. It's never one that has to be travelled alone, share your load with those who offer to help, and be willing to help shoulder the load of another. Together, the load becomes lighter. And look for the ones who have isolated themselves from any group, they're usually the ones who see themselves as outcasts, or not belonging. A compliment, or a brief conversation about the weather, could be the bright spot in their week. Never underestimate the power of your words, or of a single, random, act of kindness.

I agree. I've battled depression almost 35 years after one suicide attempt. I wasn't a teen but when my mind goes to dark places I have a tendency to shut myself off from people. The only thing that helps is medication, my fur babies, and music especially this song. I have played it so many times. The past year has been the worst so far. I lost my lab mix to cancer, then found my husband dead. He was sick but I always thought he would die in a hospital so that was traumatic. I had to sell my house of 26 years and move to a mobile home that I only could afford as is which means it needs alot of work. I'm also in a part of town away from all my friends and I don't have family. Two months ago I lost my chihuahua who was closest to me out of all the animals I have had to cancer. I've finally agreed to try therapy again but I'm on a waiting list. I'm a strong person and people keep telling me that but a person can only take so much so I am thankful for music because it's always there when no one else is.

I think that's the real power of this song. It's so sort of direct in a way that can, in so many cases, come off as ignorant or condescending because telling someone in a dark place to just stop feeling that way is so deeply unhelpful, but then it completely flips the script by putting that imperative ("so hold on") into the context of absolute validation and understanding of that dark place.

In the midst of pre-concert chaos I found him to be one of the most intense, focused, and engaging personalities I have ever come across. It was strange. Mayhem was going on around us, but there was this bubble around him of....calm.....We spoke for a bit, he asked some pointed questions then went to get ready. Really a great personality.

It's the End of the World (As We Know It), The One I Love, Losing My Religion, Orange Crush, Fall on Me, and the aforementioned Losing My Religion. (to start) Thanks for the react!

One way to take the end of the video: Everybody has chosen to leave their problems (represented by the traffic jam) behind, and have gone on into some unknown future. Another way: If hundreds of people vanished in such a public way we'd pay attention, we'd care, we'd wonder what happened... but we don't pay as much attention to the lives lost by suicide.

Thank you for this. I am almost 54 years old and still cry my eyes out at this song. It hits so hard. I used to be in a very dark place and probably thought of suicide more in one day than most people do in their lifetime. I felt as if I failed at everything. That feeling, oddly enough, is the only reason I never tried. Because I thought I’d fail at that, too. I managed somehow to change my thoughts and with that came a change in my life. I’m somewhat successful, I live in a beautiful home with a beautiful wife, I have 4 incredible grandchildren and life is good. I’m so blessed to be here today and every day. My wife and I do a thing every single day at dinner where we say one thing that we are grateful for. That alone keeps us grounded and humble. So please, if anyone is reading this and struggling inside, message me. Talk to me. Talk to someone. You are special. You are loved. Please hang on. It’s worth it, trust me. ❤️❤️❤️

R.E.M. is a must for any serious music fan. Their debut album "Murmur" was voted as 'Best Album of the Year' in 1983 by Rolling Stone magazine...(over Michael Jackson's Thriller!!) Just 4 years later, after their fifth album was released, Rolling Stone deemed them "America's Best Rock n' Roll Band" on the cover of the magazine. They went from the quintessential college rock band, to a cutting edge indie act, to the biggest band on the planet. They inspired everyone from Radiohead to Nirvana...both of which were big fans. Many years later, in 2011, after they disbanded....'The Atlantic' magazine reaffirmed what Rolling Stone had claimed back in 1987....."R.E.M.: America's Best Band." The article posed the question...."what American band was so good...for so long?" The answer of course....none.
