Trying A Fisheye Lens For Landscape Photography

In today video I'm trying a fisheye lens for landscape photography. Specifically this is the 7artisans 7.5mm f2.8 Mark II fisheye lens and I've actually had it in my bag for a few photoshoots and had a bit of a play with it and today I'm taking it out for a dedicated fisheye photoshoot and sharing all that, and my thoughts on this lens.
Is a fisheye lens worth it for landscape photography and, as this is a pretty inexpensive lens, is the lens itself any good?

    As a semi-pro shooter, I consider a fisheye an important part of my kit. I feel like it helps me a get really unique photos. I shoot with a Canon 8-15mm. The zoom gives you a lot of options especially if you shoot with both crop and FF cameras. This looks a fun way to get into fisheye with a smaller commitment of money. In my experience you can de-fish a fisheye photo and get very good super-wide results, but you cannot do the opposite. I've never seen a fish effect added in post that looked anything close to good. While you can't shoot traditional portraits or head shots, don't avoid people shots completely. Group and other examples like photos inside a car can be very interesting. I have a fisheye group on Facebook if you are interested in joining.

    Two important things : The filters go in the other end of the lens . Also, to get circular fisheye shots you needed to unscrew the center of the lens cap bc completely removing the entire thing just produces wide angle images.

    Appreciate the input Brian. I've never seen any filters that would go between the lens and the body for this set up. The lens cap is a pull off cap and it's either on or off. I have seen fisheyes that use the middle circle of the sensor to create round images but this one is designed to use the whole sensor. Thank you for watching and commenting

    Thanks for the video. With lenses that are rectilinear corrected the ‘leaning’ effect you describe when the camera pointing up or down is called ‘perspective distortion’.

    lots of fun with my own sigma fish-eye.we did close up portrait shots of each other when we were out on a shoot with this lens.we were buckled over laughing at the shots,massive heads and tiny bodies and feet.you can get really close to the lens to focus which will distort the face and body.used it for landscape/architecture too.helps when the light is not at its best,and just a wee bit fun to pass the time.

    Thank you for the detailed review. I have been thinking about a wide-angle or a fisheye for some time but dismissed it as I did not want to but a lens I only used once. However, I've seen a good second-hand 7Artisans going for a very good price and this review, particularly the city landscape shots, has made my mind up: I will buy it and I will be using it. Thanks.

    Great video! I received my Rokinon 8mm f/3.5 lens yesterday. I have a few questions: Did you change your aspect ratio? I have read that the 1:1 ratio is suggested. I was getting vignetting showing the barrel-effect and viewfinder at 3:2. Did you take the lens hood off? That also created vignetting. It was my first attempt. But I like the possibilities regarding architecture and landscapes. THANKS

  • @RalphGoldsmith

    @RalphGoldsmith

    Жыл бұрын

    Not sure what camera you're using this on. I haven't used the Rokinon but I believe it creates a circular image on a full frame which would certainly suit a 1:1. I don't get any vignetting on the crop sensor with the 7Artisans and that doesn't have a removable hood either, Have fun with it and glad you enjoyed the video. Thank you for watching and commenting

    I like fisheye lenses and have bought/sold several. While I like the effect, the optical quality has always been disappointing. Last year I bought the Nikon 8-15mm fisheye and ... WOW! Beats the c**p out of the others I've tried. I can't imagine the 7artisans would be better than the other inexpensive lenses (all of which were more than this one) I've tried, but YMMV.

  • @RalphGoldsmith

    @RalphGoldsmith

    Interesting point Patrick. I would expect the Nikon 8-15 to be good as it's a high cost lens (almost 10 times the price of the 7 Artisans APS-C one in this video), Having said that I find the quality of the 7.5mm one I have to be more than good enough for any normal use and I know of at least one person who had the 10mm FF version on a Nikon Z7 and was happy with the results. Of course you don't get any AF or Aperture control from the camera on these. Thank you for watching and commenting and I appreciate your thoughts

    @@RalphGoldsmith The problem was, as you got further away from the center, especially in the corners or edges (depending on whether it's circular or full frame), they all turned to mush. Not so with the 8-15mm. Just my experience.
