Fisheye lens review: Medium format GFX100S & Canon EF8-15mm fisheye. Processing images and software

Looking at how I use fisheye lenses and how the Canon EF8-15mm F4L works on the 102MP medium format Fujifilm GFX100S. Different ways of processing images and why fisheye lenses can be so useful.

    I've just bought this lens to adapt to my Sony A7riii and A7rv, primarily for underwater use, so have been searching reviews. This was by far the most interesting and informative review. I really enjoyed it; and the cathedral shots were stunning.

    My latest fisheye ‘walkabout fun kit’ is the TTArtisans 7.5mm f/2.0 on my Fuji X-E4. I can perfectly stitch two or thee hand held shots using PhotoShop with the “Spherical” rendering and “Geometric Correction” settings. Cheers, David Myers.

    I was going to defer looking this until later, but thought I’d take a peek … and was held to through the end: lots of meat here. Marvelous photo examples: ‘They aren’t the one trick pony you think they are.’ I have found your comment about having more resolution to work with has been my experience. Sure, any imperfect focus and camera instability becomes apparent, but only when pixel peeping. When both are correct, you have a lot to work with, even when cropping. One claim against higher resolution sensors is that they are susceptible to “more noise,” but that noise is proportionally high resolution, and easily removed.

    Fabulous images Keith! This video is a ‘must see’ for all newbies that occasionally suffer from ‘Photographer’s Block’! I actually drew a fish-eye Image for an art college project before I was into photography: The reflection in a chrome hub cap! I’ve never been without one of these lenses ever since!

    Thank you for a really interesting video, I was definitely of the “one trick pony” opinion but you’ve certainly shown me otherwise. Like you I have a GFX 100s but as a former Nikon user (sold all the kit when I switched to Fuji) I never had the chance of trying any 35-mm lenses on my camera. Like you I’m eagerly awaiting Fujis tilt/shift lenses, landscapes are my main thing nowadays and even though I use focus stacking quite a lot I find myself wanting the possibility to shift more than I used to.

    Thanks for doing this cutting edge review, Keith! Lots of great ideas! This camera a so much fun! It opens up broad vistas, literally - wider field of view for fisheyes and regular wide-angle lenses. The Canon 17mm TS-E (tilt-shift) becomes 13.5mm, and the Laowa 15mm shift becomes 11.5mm! The fisheye at 33mm x 33mm 1:1 on this big sensor will be great for the ceiling of a cathedral, doorways, astro skies, etc.! It’s great to see the extra height advantage of this oversized 4:3 ratio sensor, which is especially noticeable in your inside, staircase photo, which could be very useful for some images. Those who shoot real estate photos of bathrooms, small kitchens, etc. can use this wider and especially taller sensor to get the shot. I’m also thinking that a fisheye could be used to get the same effect as a shift lens if we shoot with the sensor parallel to the buildings, keeping the buildings’ walls looking like they’re tilting in, using standard defishing, no lens correction necessary. If we keep the camera perfectly level, not tilted up when we shoot buildings (or trees), the really wide field of view can capture some pretty tall buildings without having to be tilted up. The image can be defished, and the upper part of the image can be chosen in the crop, containing the tall building or height of the room. Does that make sense, Keith? And I have a question. You told me earlier that Fisheye Hemi only works in 3:2, so I’m assuming that’s why you chose a 3:2 crop in your outdoor sidewalk and buildings image. Once you defished the vertical lines, then you cropped it again to get something close to a 2:1 image, a nice result. I’m wondering why you didn’t line up your original 3:2 crop up to the sides of the sensor. Was that a stylistic choice? You could have cropped to the sides of the sensor, and Fisheye Hemi would have worked, correct? Does Fisheye Hemi require us to do the 3:2 crop centered vertically (centered with the equator), or can we do the 3:2 crop at the top of the sensor instead, for example? When fully defishing with other software, we can just defish the entire image, but Fisheye Hemi doesn’t allow that. This camera is a dream come true for me. So many new creative possibilities! Really wide, 65:24 panos can be done with this too in one shot, for landscapes, cityscapes, etc.. I hope you change your mind and try some of the camera’s LARGE SIZE crop options someday, even if it’s just to show viewers what can be done when using them. When shooting in RAW, the entire sensor is recorded anyway, so we can still crop anyway we want in post. Thanks again for doing this very insightful video!

    Thanks The 3:2 crop was as much limited by me remembering to take screen shots - I do these videos with no script, which is why I always say to check written versions [when I get round to finishing them ;-) ] FEH works well, when i works, but some experimentation is needed...

    The problem is the fall off just before the black bit. The 180º field of view and projection means detail is very crunched up. You can fill the space, but it becomes meaningless once the image is processed

    I can imagine that 44 inch, square prints of the circular images are a nice size! Sometimes 24 inch printers aren't big enough, especially for square and 4:3 images - and for canvas images that need extra canvas for wrapping around the frame. In Ken Rockwell's review of the lens, "Canon 8-15mm f/4 L," he shows how to change the black background to white in Photoshop, which can sometimes be preferable, especially when shown on a white page online or whatever. Round metal prints are available now too. I'm still no fan of metal, but these round, metal prints are impressive - kind of like the porthole in ships. I wonder if a round, paper print can be mounted somehow also, forgoing the square box around it. How would one even cut the print perfectly round?

    Compass [string, sewing needle and pencil] and a fine jigsaw did fine for one for laminating onto board. Cut the circular board [fine jigsaw], laminate and trim circular with a sharp knife - I didn't do this myself though so couldn't say how practical it would be. Personally, it just looks gimmicky, but tastes [or lack thereof] vary widely and I've never let tackiness get in the way of a sale ;-) :-) The black/white surround is just a normal circular selection in Photoshop...

    @@KeithCooper Perhaps the mounted round print looked tacky because there was no frame. Making round frames from wood would probably be cost prohibitive, but I remember seeing *oval* prints of Jesus that were framed in wood more than half a century ago. As you know, picture framers buy straight pieces of wood framing sticks, and then cut them to length, which can't be done for round frames. Many picture frames are made from some type of plastic instead, which I would think could be easily made into different sized, completed, ready-to-go round frames if this style ever becomes popular enough.

    Thanks for the video. I’m working commercially in the VR industry and I’m curious if a gfx 100s with a fish eye could give me higher resolution results in better quality and fewer shots than working with a x-t5 with 8mm lens. ATM I shoot 8 pics slanted and a ground pic to get my equirectangular image. Which lens could I use to try this approach on a 100s?

  • @KeithCooper

    @KeithCooper

    Жыл бұрын

    You need 11mm on the GFX [+ 8-15mm] to get a maximal circular [180º] coverage - this needs six pics including top/bottom This is the device I'd use kzread.info/dash/bejne/iqWbypujk7i3YJs.html It might be possible to use a longer focal length on the 8-15 to get more coverage and hence more megapixels of image. Depends on software Definitely one left as an experiment for the viewer, since I don't do such stuff commercially ;-)
