    Ralph, thank you for your excellent review of the "Brian" tripod from 3 Legged Thing! I was a bit surprised when you mentioned the kit you use with it, and that in certain conditions you saw a bit of blur in your images. I believe the Brian has a load capacity of 30 lbs. Based on your comments/observations, I think I shall look into the Leo V2 version, as it has a load capacity of an amazing 66 lbs, which implies that it should have absolutely zero issues with a 10 lb kit. Thanks again sir.

  • @RalphGoldsmith

    Glad it was helpful. It's worth remembering that all travel tripods will be less stable than their larger counterparts, the small size normally comes with thinner leg sections that are more prone to shake. It's a bit of a trade off. Brian is still an excellent tripod although I make more use of his big brother Winston now. I'm sure Leo is good as well. Thank you for watching and commenting and enjoy your new tripod when you get it

    I've watched other videos on this style from other photographers and liked the concept of Pep's images. I've tried myself with trees, trains, and buildings but I need more work. iPhone photography is different and clearly there are many uses for it… just as there were with the Instamatic camera and film P&S when most families had one. I have 14 pro X and is best when used with the Leica Lux Pro App or Fjorden App, or for art photos / ICM etc… But normally there is a ‘phone look’ about images… But are they becoming the new normal with billions of phone images being made each day? But you can also use it as a live viewfinder with a real camera (good for the aurora in Scotland) or using the viewfinder App for scouting to see what say a 50mm f1.2 would look like on a scene at F1.2 and shooting at 1:1 ratio or any camera / lens setup when you do not want to carry all your gear with you.

    The best camera is surely the one you have readily available. I tend to use the mobile phone a lot lately and especially when having my main gear is not possible or appropriate. I am really impressed with what you can do these days with mobile phone cameras, especially when you edit the raw images. Not the greatest technically but surely a very useful tool, especially when scouting. What people need to understand though is that there is a lot of automatic computational aspects on mobile phone photography, which may make people believe that they can totally replace a proper camera. And this is far from reality. Thanks for sharing Ralph!!

    Good shots in there Ralph. It's hard perhaps for older photographers like me to break the camera habit. Thanks to Eric & Kass Mencher who shoot only on phones, I now make 80% of my images on a Samsung Galaxy, some in RAW when the opportunity allows. Edit with Lightroom and Snapseed. I prefer a dslr in low light. As you rightly say, good prints up to A3 are possible which shouldsuit most amateurs. Will be interesting to see if you choose to get into phone shooting. It's certainly a lighter carry.

    You have made some very good points Ralph. Big heavy equipment can actually hinder rather than help us getting photos. For wildlife photography this is true. I remember the good old days when I was shooting wildlife with a D500 and the Sigma 150-600 sport edition and that was nearly 4kg on its own. I started feeling the pain on my back and arms after only a couple of hours and that discouraged me a lot. With mirrorless though this has drastically changed. I paid a visit to Martin Mere wildlife sanctuary in Lancashire, last December. I use the M43 format and have a Leica DG 100-400mm f4-6.3. It's a very portable configuration, has fantastic image stabilisation, and an effective FF maximum focal length of 800 mm. I can use it without a tripod. I got some super images of flamingos and other wading birds in some wonderful low winter sun. So your video struck a chord with me. Use the best tool for the job not the best (ultimate) technology. Sure, had I been shooting pre-dawn in low light perhaps I would have needed an ultra expensive fast prime. Even then, my M43 system performs brilliantly at high ISO. I like to go fell walking and the M43 system means I can get images that would be impractical with a larger full frame format. I liked how you used the shorter lens to include the surrounding environment which means a more interesting composition rather than a 'record' type close cropped species orientated image. Another interesting video. Thanks pal.

  • @RalphGoldsmith
    @RalphGoldsmith25 күн бұрын

    That sounds like a great setup for wildlife. I think there is a temptation, especially when you have a longer focal length, to always try to fill the frame and that's not always the best option. When (at some point in the future) i decide to change cameras I will definitely consider M43. Thank you for watching and commenting
