Try This Great Trick for Painting Green Landscapes - Pastel Painting Tutorial
Let's face it.... a mostly green landscape can be a bit boring unless we can learn ways to bring those greens to life! In this pastel painting tutorial, I will teach you and great trick to tackle a landscape that is mostly green.
In this lesson you will learn how a simple underpainting can make a huge difference when painting a green landscape. I paint the same reference image on two surfaces; one with a cool underpainting, and one with a warm underpainting. Both are successful, but it really makes the point clear that warm underpaintings are a great idea for green landscapes, even though the cooler underpainting provided a lovely result. I think it would have really made an impact if I had painted one on just the white surface alone... (perhaps I'll do that in a future video).
I hope you enjoy, and you will find the reference image, product info and sharing links below. Happy Painting!

@Pardus777 hello, I use soft, pastels, and not oil pastels. You could use my techniques with either though. Hope that helps!

I have never painted with pastels, mostly I use watercolors. I too love those inktense blocks. That said, I learned so much watching you create these "green" landscape that I hope will seep into my watercolors. Thank you for sharing your talent, experience, and seeing your orderliness in your studio. KZread is such a great place to be inspired,, you've inspired me.
The painting on the left looks like it is pre-twilight; love it. It really helped seeing these paintings side by side, thank you.
Hi Susan! I like how both of these turned out. You are a great teacher, so pleasant and easy to listen to. What a gift!! Keep praising Him!💕🙌🏻🕊

Amen sister! Got to keep praising our beautiful Savior.
Thank you Susan for an interesting project. I like both paintings the left one is cooler, restful & harmonious, the other one is warmer the colours zing & vibrate, amazing effects.
Liebe Susan, du hast mich sehr inspiriert! Von diesen Landschaftsfotos grün in grün und dadurch langweilig, habe ich so viele und weiss jetzt endlich wie ich sie zum Leben erwecken kann. Vielen, vielen Dank 🤗
Both are great, they just have feeling of different athmospheric conditions. The cooler one looks like the evening after sunset but before twilight, and the warmer is like afternoon just before sunset. I'll definitely try this. Thank you so much for the tutorial.

Great observations… it’s amazing the difference an underpainting can make.
Thanks Sue for being so Kind and sharing all the tips and advice you do. I do agree with you God made a beautiful colourful world and I loved both paintings. Looking forward to trying colourful under paintings. Thanks so much for teaching us so much.
Ty Susan. I've learned so much. You and your creations, are proof of Intelligent Design. 🙏

@@monetcafe haha me too, literally… I write songs, lead worship and paint his creation… he’s pretty awesome.
Dear Susan, it was exiting. But frankly speaking I loved the intermediate images with bright areas of yellow, red and purple. It's much more impressive. I use underpainting in my drawing process, but my soft pastel palette is limited and I have to mix colours. And I use alcohol spray (hand disinfection liquid) to wash colours. Thanks for your wonderful tutorial lessons. They are really helpful for me.

warm-style so magnificent! Bravo.
Thank you for sharing your skill and your faith!
Hi Susan, thanks for sharing, I learned a lot🌺
They're both beautiful, but personally I like the one with blue underpainting a bit more. Nevertheless they're done in the spirit of Master Monet 👏
Formidable démo en parallèle de fonds chauds et froids une belle expérience à tester nous aussi merci 🙏
Like you, I prefer the warmer undertones!
I love both of them 😊❤
Amazing! 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
Beautiful painting love the color's.
Both are fabulous. I just personally lean toward cooler colors in decorating and clothing. But this was an excellent comparison. Thank you for enlightening me.

You are so welcome! Thanks so much Diane!
Both are good.
Fantastic. ❤
Hi Susan! Thank you for your teaching. I will try to remember many of the things you said and apply the color application to my acrylic art. I painted a small landscape with wildflowers and tree line a couple years ago and applied some of your color selection teaching. It sold immediately! I don’t paint landscapes very often, painting usually very colorful abstracts instead. I actually haven’t sold any of my brightly colored art yet, but I’m still loving the palette I use for them. I have to work it thru and paint what makes me happy in this season of my art. But when I watch you paint your landscapes I get a hankering to try one again in acrylic. It’s the medium I know how to use to get effects I want. I have tried your soft pastel teaching once or twice, even buying the Senelier Paris collection. I love the colors but my work was horrible. I didn’t have any pastel paper and used the clear gesso. It was unsuccessful for me, but I’m still interested in it every now and then. I actually love the pan pastel tutorial you have shown, but not willing to invest in them at this time. God is good , giving each of us a portion of His wonderful Creative spirit. I can identify how happy it makes Him to always create bc I get a spark of that same joy too!

Praise Jesus! Thanks @lauramassingill! I can't help but shout praises to my Savior!
Love these paintings! Great idea with the intense blocks. I don't have access to the Terry Ludwig brand, as no shops carry them in 🇩🇪. Would you have alternative suggestions for their dark purple by Sennelier, Schmincke, Koh-i-noor? These are European based brands which I can find easily. Tha is in advance!!
