Put a Chinese carb on mine, bought it from a friend who left it sitting with old gas in it and it wouldn’t run. The 19 dollar Chinese carb made it start on first turn of key. Now 3 years later it surges while idling just like yours did. I’ve still got the Briggs carb, I’m gonna clean it up and put it on to see if it’ll fix the surge.

Good news is I have a clean carb thanks to you and I know how to do it in the future but bad news, still won't start. I also replaced the air filter, drained older gas, put new in, cleaned out gas line, replaced the fuel filter and spark plug. I'll look at your other reply on another comment and keep trouble shooting. Thanks again for the carb cleanout instructions!

Pull up and turn each know until the side pops up. Do that for each side.

I have a brand new troy bilt 19 hp that started surging after 5 months of use. Seems awfully soon for a carb rebuild . It doesn't surge at higher rims but does at lower with the deck engaged or not . Had difficulties starting it a few days ago. Ideas ?

Should be under warranty. I wpuld take it to a service provider 1st. Could be anything, carb, vacuum, gasket leak, conpression, etc?

Might be a bad carb in general overall or the mechanical fuel pump. Chances are it's a bad carb.

Check springs....sometimes over time the springs weaken and it isn't even the carb that is causing the surging...it is the governor spring that has weakened....you can try a new spring or tightenting the old one by removing a part of it and making it shorter which makes its pull tighter

There might be a plastic plug, remove it and remove the jet and clean it. Reinstall the jet and 86 the plastic plug. This is very common.

Bad gas, spark plug, fuel pump, fuel filter, fuel line...i would check those 1st since they are the easiest and cheapiest. Else, could be compression or vacuum leak at one of the gaskets on the engine.

I had surging too with a brand new carb. Since everyone said the problem is always dirt in the carb, I gave it a bath (ultrasound) and problem solved.

Well, mine recently started to surge, even with a new carb. So, I'm wondering if it is the magneto, fuel pump, or possibly a loss of compression. I'm selling mine.

Could try draining gas and putting fresh gas in it. Also, a cheap thing to do would be to replace the little fuel filter as well.

I have the same mower. It had been sitting up for 5 or 6 years cause one if the deck spindles was stripped and our yard is not very big. I just bought push mower. I decided to get it running. I drained old gas out of the tank and lines. filled with new gas. Nothing. I watched your video and cleaned carb. It cranks and runs now but its surging and if I lower the throttle it runs rougher and if I lower it below 1/3 throttle it dies. If I hold the butterfly lever it runs fine but it tries to fight me to move it. Also if I remove the cover it doesn't seem to surge, but does surge if I just open the filter cover so air that is bypassing the filter. Any suggestions? Edited to add: I have used nothing but alcohol free gas. Mine did not have all of the jelly that yours does.

Could be any component on the carb or mower...bad jets, faulty carb bowl solenoid, bad fuel pump assembly, bad spark plug, manifold leak... I would start with the spark plug and replace the fuel pump assembly that way you're not out tons of money. I would check the air filter as well. Sometimes it is cheaper just to get on Amazon and buy a chinese carb for 20 bux or so and replace the whole carb as well. I would definitely consider that as an option if you really want to get the mower going again, that way you eliminate all issues with the carb as well. Keep me posted and let me know what you find out. Interested in your fix if you get it going.

@@JRMSweeps ok. I found a carb recommended by another youtuber. As far as I can tell, mine doesn't have a fuel pump. The line goes straight from the tank to the carb with only a filter in between. Clean all the jets out better....there might be an idle jet that you are missing....im assuming there is some sort of jet that is low speed jet that's clogged....look everywhere on carb. ..sometimes there are screws on top or side of carb that you need to remove to access these small idle jets

Could be fuel pump. I would do an electric fuel pump setup. Not sure of it has a fuel filter.

Man i just dont know without being there really. Will it surge if you spray starter fluid in the intake on startup?

I would check fuel filter and fuel pump 1st. Outside of that, could be low compression.

also, maybe bad gas??? i failed to mention it could be a vacuum leak from a gasket on the motor or manifold vacuum leak as well. I would def start with the small stuff, blocked fuel lines, spark plug, bad gas, fuel filter, and fuel pump and go from there.

From what I've read in the comments on other Briggs carb topics. Many of the aftermarket carbs are actually jetted too small for a 17.5 Intek. There is a video also of a guy that purchased one of those carbs and he is drilling the jet out slightly and makes his run better. I bought a carb from the Briggs store on Amazon last month and it was plug and play. But there are many more carbs on Amazon and Ebay that pop up as fitting, but don't necessarily have the exact jetting.

Its seems to have a sparking wire bottom of engine like spark plug spark.

It's on the side of the mower engine. You should see 2 hoses going to a "housing" that is mounted vertically on the engine.

Don’t see one. Must be a slight variation in the engine because the air filter is also different. Similar though. Engine will run (Barely) but it’s like it’s not getting enough fuel. New carb but same result. Maybe I’ll try to adjust the valves again. I’m at a loss. Appreciate the assist. Thank you.

Trace the fuel line out from the gas tank and you will find it!. I sometimes go with an electric pump and forget about the mechanical pump. Did that on a 10k watt welding machine and it rums great.

The problem persisted. Watch as he advances the throttle setting and then announces, "It's purring like a kitten." at about the 5:50 time mark.

It has to work its way through the system before it runs right, which it certainly does in video you can hear it running good

@JRMSweeps it's a circular plug on the side of a carburetor. I put some jb weld on it to seal it and now it no longer surges. Surging can be caused by a number of different variables.

Great info on the plug. Yes, surging can be caused by several issues. Mine just happened to be a gummed up carb at the time. I learned something today and appreciate the info! Good info for anyone troubleshooting their issues 💯.
