Common problem with plastic carburetor (Briggs & Stratton) engine

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

A friend has a Troy-built push mower, with a Briggs and Stratton engine that wont start. Can we get it running for him. I'm suspecting the carburetor is the issue.

Great Video. One of the common issues with this carb' is the plastic choke touches the metal bracket (that holds the air filter) and hangs up in the open position. If you run a metal nail file down between the choke and the bracket you can shave just enough plastic off to fix it and you do not have to remove the carb'. This is super easy. And it fixes a NO START issue.

Robert Clark you are a gentleman and a scholar. Your suggestion did the trick for me. With about 4 hours invested, I had already changed spark plug, air filter, emptied gas tank, removed fuel line to inspect and then bit the bullet and searched on carburetor videos. Thanks E&R for an excellent video. It gave me enough info to decide that perhaps my relatively new mower's carburetor wasn't the issue or that at least today was not the day to disassemble mine. By God's grace I read a few comments and found Robert's here at the top. I also learned that you can cause the plastic choke to stay open by not being careful about how you replace the mower top lid. 🙂

Thank you for this video! My Toro Super Recycler was reving up and down and then intermittently would just quit. This video gave me the confidence to pull the carburetor apart and do the cleaning as you have shown. One thing I encountered was some resistance re-seating the carburetor which required a little force due to the plastic seal ring.

Thanks for posting this. I had the same issue. I removed the top cover, but did not remove the linkages to the carb. pulled the bottom cup off...bunch of debris came out with the gas. I then used my air compressor to clean the carb (at least blow it out). Reconnected, started right up. Problem solved.

Take the upper cover off and lift the tank out to rinse it out with clean gas. The carb and tank can come off together without fighting the short fuel hose. Dump the fuel in a jar. Inspect the tank screen. Send the carb fuel back into the tank to clear the screen, then remove tank cap and pour into a large mouth clear jar. Then the problem doesn't repeat often. Let it sit. If you have anything in the bottom of the jar, pour off and retain it. Use the upper part of the fuel in your pickup. Use fresh fuel in the small engine. Floral wire measures right for poking those jet holes. If you haven't yet bought torch tip cleaner. I was so glad to learn this instead of buying more and shipping Chinese junque. But that's where everything's coming from. A jet can fix some carbs. A metal needle valve with Viton tip, can fix others. A q-tip In a drill can clean the needle seat. Use fresh gas and don't leave today's gas sitting in the mower. Use it up. You can drain the bowl with an Allen. Then a short long container can catch it. These work well once a mechanic re-works them.

I took off the carb just like you did and cleaned it out and sprayed it with cleaner and got it to start but it quickly shut off. Took it off again and this time yanked out that center port and sprayed it, cleaned it off, blew on it, put it back and she's good as new. Must be extremely common problem with this model. There are two very common issues with this carb i've seen, the first is the jet needs opening up (as you sugest) the second is float pin wear, with the bottom off the carb, flip it over so it's upside down and check to see it the float is parallel with the carb body in the shut possition!! if it isn't just bin it and buy another because what it does is seep fuel into the cylinder bore and over time it dilutes the engine oil prematurely wearing the engine internals with out any real sign of an issue.

These OEM carbs are 40 bucks a pop.. if you’re having carb issues you can easily clean this carb. It’s easy to take off and the jet set is easy to clean.. but keep in mind once you’re having carb issues the likelihood of it happening again is 90 percent. Just spend the money and replace the damn thing.. replacing is easier than fixing 3 times.. and much less time consuming. Run non ethanol gas that has a year or more shelf life not the crap you get outta the normal Pump down the street

How old is the mower. Could be a fuel issue (possibly running lean) or could be a compression issue. Check plug first. Light brown or tan color = running ok. White= running lean. Black and sooty running to rich.unfortunately most newer carbs have little or no adjustability. But try a good carb cleaning .
