I remember seeing Imitation Of Life in the movies , I was about 10. When this woman sang this song, I began to cry uncontrollably . It was my first tear jerker. I asked my friend's mother who sang "that song" , that's when I first heard of Mahalia Jackson . What a voice. .

My mum loved this film... I have always remembered this bit of the film and was overwhelmed with emotion every time. My mum played this as my nans exit in church when she passed away. Mum mum passed away few weeks back and i will be singing this same song on my mothers exit in church before being buried with my nan. 😭

I can NEVER watch this scene without crying, the soulful emotion Ms.Jackson possessed was just incomparable. Truly chosen by God.

I first watched this with my mother and older sister when I was about seven or eight years old. At that time I didn't know why I was crying. My beautiful mother has gone on to Heaven and now this song evokes fresh tears at that memory.

I watched the first version of Imitation of Life (I think 1935) and compared to the 1959 version. Both were great, but what the first version didn't have was Mahalia Jackson. Made a world of difference to me.

She died about 12 years after this film was made in 1959. It's amazing that even way back then (50's) she was catching hell from so called Gospel critics who said she had or was *watering* down her traditionally sung, gospel style to catch a more modern, main stream audience! Goes to show you, you can't please EVERYBODY no matter who you are! RIP!
