Mahalia Jackson wasnt just a singer. She was a great musical evangelist of the 20th century. When she hits those notes full voice I feel like I a literally soaring! My father was a holiness preacher and we grew up in poverty. Her music was a constant presence in our home. He would listen to her sing and cry crocodile tears because of the purity and the force of her singing. I love her legacy.

My grandma adored Mahalia Jackson. She just passed away yesterday (February 28, 2023) and I still have yet to process it

My mother Named me Mahalia because of this song and when she passed away January 25, 2020 I played this song for her and sang my heart out for her. Even though I can't sing I still cried and sang my her out just like she does. I had everyone in the funeral crying. God I miss her so much this is the closes I can get to her. R.I.P. Mama Dollie Mae Pierre.

You can absolutely feel her love for The Lord. Mahalia ministered to so ,many in the day, and still is.

My mother would hum this as she traveled up and down the hall of our home, as she cooked and cleaned, and took care of the neighborhood babies! One of those babies sang so beautifully at her going home ceremony! Never can hear enough of voices like these! Where'd they go Lord?! Bring them back please! They help you to go to the place where you can see God's Glory Celebratorily

Damien Clark Damien Clark you said that perfect it does seem as though she Completely forgot the people in the audience , I believe she it not only seemed she forgot the people but actually did forget the audience ,but instead let the audience in on her personal worship of God, she was spirituality transported into the presence of God , my goodness and did she minister her God given gift to all who was bless to witness this incredible moment in time . Mahalia sang in clip years ago and I can still feel at this point and time the absolutely stunning performance she gave privately in open show ,my goodness I have goose bumps even now ,thank you Lord for allowing us to witness Your Incredible anointing on this woman of God. I heard her 70 years ago when, as a kid after WW2 , I used to borrow 45 vinyl records from the USIS and wonder at all the music from North America...! Loved all her songs and, as a lifelong atheist, never was bothered by the religious "message" Only her voice brought me to a peaceful place....a peaceful state..! Same for classical church music and Gregorian chants...! Makes me feel good...

Goosebumps. She sang and praised the Lord like an angel from heaven. Sister Mahalia, forevermore you will be singing with the heavenly choir.

I'm listening to this 3:00 a.m. in the morning and it's comforting my soul had listened to her all my life and I'm 73 years Young hope this occurs somebody's heart Hallelujah everybody

This is beautiful. I've seen some singers trying to mimic her style; yet they don't understand. It's not a style. It's a life conquered by the One.

Mahalia Jackson was a gifted singer and her voice is the platinum standard of what all gospel singers should be.

We sleep until the last day when at His 2ND coming He calls the Righteous only from their graves, then we who are still alive; to meet Him in the air (1 Thessalonians 4), and as stated all the way through Jesus' teachings, particularly when he arrived to resurrect Lazarus (who was decaying to dust in his grave) - Jesus had to explain what he meant by 'sleep'. Don't listen to what people of any colour say about it even if it sounds good - Go back to the Bible and find it interprets itself. There is one true death reserved for those who chose darkness and disbelief and don't want to be with God anyway - the New Jerusalem descends after our millennium in heaven, the unrighteous are raised, try to take the city by force; the earth is cleansed by holy fire, the wicked destroyed eternally, not burning eternally - the earth is made new while we watch; and God dwells with us forevermore. Praise God for the truth that only a remnant believe and I thank Him for Mahalia's ministry of song too!

Mahalia brings tears to my eyes so many times..she is just beautiful in every way.

What you may notice is that Mahalia hits the top of the key, just before breaking into the next higher. It was learned by all great singers in modern, operatic, soul music...that to be distinctive you have to break through. It was natural to her and many others. It's called harmony in the upper range where your voice joins with your voice. Then there's the ability to see that dragging out the tempo increases intensity. You listen to one of the finest examples of all gambles.

Richard Condon I see what you mean but I think her going sharp on the long intervals is just a result of emotional excitement. She was a big fan of Caruso and the tenors of the gramophone era, who of course all imitated his "sobbing" delivery which involved sometimes sharping for a split second

I have NEVER heard a more moving, spiritually changing performance in my entire life! I am a HUGE fan of Whitney Houston and there is NO way she could have done better! Miss Jackson, you have truly moved my spirit! God has blessed you on this Earth and certainly has blessed you in the after life! Lord you can sing!

Her singing is praise. I remember singing with her as a child on top of my longs. It is her personal praise.

My mother is gone to be with God now. Mahalia Jackson is her favorite singer of all time. I know she walks around heaven with her.

What a star. So sad she only reached 60 years of age. The very first album I bought when I got a turntableset when I got 16, was The "World's Greatest Gospel Singer". And now, 55 years later I still put the needle in the groove to listen to the original that I treasure. :-) It moves me tremendously. What a voice!

I feel fairly safe in saying that I believe this will probably be my all-time favorite version of Amazing Grace. I don't consider myself truly religious, but I feel the spirit flowing forth from her exquisite voice, every time.

A GREAT lady - incomparable voice and phrasing! I was fortunate enough to be present at many of her venues.

my father told me that this was his favorite gospel song and at his funneral we had someone sing it and now that i am older I understand why he liked it. everytime I hear it I can hear my father as if he was right next to i t brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it also dad I love and miss you.
