Triumph Tiger 900 Rally Pro Off Road Test Ride in the Mojave Desert

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The Triumph Tiger 900 Rally Pro is a truly impressive machine. I had the opportunity to do a Tiger 900 Rally Pro test ride a few years ago and really enjoyed it, but I've learned a lot about off road motorcycle riding on adventure bikes since then, so when I had the chance to get out and do an off road test ride on the Tiger 900 Rally Pro in the desert at this year's Get on ADV Fest in the Mojave Desert, I jumped at the opportunity.
Taking the Tiger 900 Rally Pro off road is a dream come true. It's remarkably stable and easy to ride and handles much lighter in the dirt and deep sand than the weight on paper suggests it would. I very much enjoyed this test ride and my initial Tiger 900 Rally Pro review is incredibly positive. I would absolutely consider picking one of these amazing Triumph adventure motorcycles up for myself.
On the street, the Tiger 900 is equally impressive. It's comfortable and stable even at very high speeds and is truly an ADV bike I would consider taking from one end of the continent to the other.

I just bought one and love it. Just started riding this year at age 53 (midlife crisis), so I bought a 2023 Kawasaki KLX300 and a 2023 Triumph Tiger 900 Rally Pro. Very different bikes with very different capabilities. I do a lot of 4x4 exploration in eastern Oregon, so these will be a natural progression. Thanks for the video review. @@DorkintheRoad The TC is, as you said, so intuitive in Off-Road mode that I didn't even realize it was intervening when it was slipping. It wasn't until I put it into Off-Road Pro that I realized just how gnarly it can get. ORP mode had me sliding it around, and the front brakes are so great that it slows down quickly, without locking up despite complete ABS defeat.

Been riding Triumph bikes for 25 years. Never ride off road but my bikes have NEVER broken down(except a broken throttle cable once) and I was able to turn up the idle and get back to safety.. I have owned a T Bird a Sprint RS a Speed Triple and currently ride a Bobber which is the best bike I have ever had. It is low so I am not shaky when I stop cuz I am old and short :)

(about 6k miles in 6 months) She is easily one of my all time favorite bikes! If you make it to Get on ADV in South Dakota next year it will be there. Its about a 1300mile trip for me, and I am fully confident it will get me there in comfort. I have owned three triumph bikes in the past and never had any major mechanical issues. Granted I am meticulous with maintenance.

I have tried different modes and the "Off--Road" (not "Pro") is so dialed in that I find myself confidently tackling challenges I would never have imagined with other bikes. The more time I spend on the bike, the more I appreciate it.

I'm in my 5th year of owning a Gen III (2018) Tiger 1200 XCa. The model just prior to the current Rally Explorer. I absolutely adore her, and still feel like I found an underappreciated gem of a bike. I am far from the most demanding of riders, but even so, she has needed literally no service for mechanical failure. None. The gas cap sticks occasionally, and she definitely throws a smidge, but ONLY a smidge, of extra warmth out the sides (the corollary to that being that she has never, and I mean NEVER, twitched her engine temperature more than, say, 5% above the halfway point, even at 114F in the Arizona desert on a full day of Interstate freeway riding at full freeway speeds - this girl stays COOL internally). I take her in once a year for scheduled upkeep. New tires when needed. That's it. I want the new model's much bigger gas tank so bad I can taste it, but I'm not letting go of this glass-smooth, seductive banshee-howling Definitely-NOT-the-"T-Plane-Cranking" engine until I have to. Now, obviously, shaftie vs. chain, displacement differential, and the model years mean we're talking about two different individual bikes, but as a BRAND, I have nothing but top marks for Triumph's reliability. Warms my heart to see you having such a great time on a newer Limey 9 like this. Thanks for another winner of a video.

I’m on my 4th iteration of the Triumph 955i triple engine... They are as good a quality as BMW but don’t try and rape you with the price of parts. I’ve owned a 2001 Sprint ST 955i, 2003 Sprint RS 955i, 2004 Tiger 955i and 2011 Sprint GT 1050. All of them were extremely reliable, dependable, full of character and a blast to ride! The best motorcycles, I have ever owned. My current Sprint GT is my favorite. I will get a used Tiger 900 or 1200 Pro one day. Also, I believe the best fuel injection system of any bike, you get 50+ MPG, no matter how you ride it. It’s remarkable..

I bought my 2022 Tiger 900 Rally Pro new in Aug 2021. I have a little over 16K miles on it at this point. I just completed a two-state 1,500 mile ride over a ten day period; including a 12-mile trip down an old service road in the mountains. I've done a total of six days of adventure bike classes on the bike, with the usual number of tip-overs, plus one or two of my own, with only slight cosmetic damage to the easily replaceable parts. I do recommend barkbusters and doubletake mirrors to replace the more delicate stock parts--with the barkbusters, and the stock engine guards (lowers only), none of my drops have ever touched the engine or the paint. At the 12K service, I did have to get the valves adjusted, which was not cheap, but the bike runs and rides as good as the day I took it home from the dealer. For some reason, this more modern triple engine has 6K service intervals, while my 2019 Bonneville Street Scrambler's intervals are 10K. As the video says, it's not an inexpensive bike, to either buy or maintain, but I am very happy with the performance, comfort, and reliability.

I just bought this bike and I love it. I gave up my BMW 750 GS for this bike and it was the best decision I made. There just is no comparison between the Tripple and the BMW two cylinder. What's so funny, you said it feels like an extension of yourself and that the bike kinda knows what you want to do. I totally compared my experience with this bike when I first rode it to the Avitar movie where the Pandora people clip into the Great Leonopteryx. So here is a warning to shorter folks, I am 5'7" and I could not touch both my toes until I adjusted the SAG. I still am one footing it, but can at least turn my head when I stop without losing my balance. If you are my height or shorter and dont ride like Jocelyn Snow, your going to probably have to lower the bike if you don't want to deal with the heighth of the bike. I did order the spring lowering kit from Touratech-USA which takes about 4 weeks to arrive in the states and then another two for my dealer to get it. If you need that kit, you will see that it is "out of stock" they never keep this kit in stock, you must order it for Touratech to order it. Jeez, this was long but I wanted to share and I LOVE THIS BIKE!!!

I have a Triumph Bonneville 1200 and a BMW gs. Both are great bikes, but the Triumph is probably the nicest bike I've ever owned. I am thinking about getting the 900 GT Pro as I do more on road than off road riding - probably 80/20. I think the GT has the capability for light off roading and is really loaded and better on the road. I'm also 66 years old and 5'7" and the Rally Pro starts at 850-880cm vs 810-830cm (something like that) on the GT Pros. For me, the GT is perfect height, and it will do what you just did with ease.

I've had my 900RP for a month now. It has just under 4000 miles on it. I love the bike but it's not perfect. The bad: The oil filler cap leaks a little. Enough to coat the frame behind it and to soil the bottom of my pant leg. The left fork seal weeps a bit. Just enough to see a runnel in the dust below the low mark left by the travel. The slightly disappointing: The heated grips are nice but the high setting could be a little warmer. I bought the Triumph rear panniers and front upper crash bars (the V2 ones). The fit and finish on the bars is less than desired. The fog light mount on the front upper crash bars is a riv-nut. It is wobbly even with the bolt tight. The awesome: Everything else. The motor, the quick shifter, the heated seat, the quick shifter, the TCS and ABS, and did I mention the quick shifter?

You guys out west have way more fun than us east guys😂. I'm a little jealous, to be honest. However, the wife and I plan on full-time RVing and staying out west. Well, not California😂. And of course one motorcycle(DR650) with be coming with us🍻. Wife doesn't ride, so the DR is perfect for me. But, the Tiger is awfully tempting.

Awesome bike other than a few design flaws that are a major draw backs to me if you ride off-road. I was at a rally this past weekend both leading and riding sweep. There’s a lot of sand in Michigan so a large majority of the riders from out of state were in over their heads. Figured I’d be more help picking up bikes than blasting through the trails. A few riders that have Triumphs ended up going over the bars and snapping the gooseneck that the TFT and windscreen mount to. I’m sure someone makes a reinforcement kit or different mount, but $1000 every time you go through the windshield doesn’t sound fun to me.

A great motorcycle, except that it cracks the subframes, and from what I heard they always try to excuse the issue and not cover it even under warranty. I saw some cases of the frame itself cracking on tiger groups. In tiger groups, it is a very common issue and that didn't happen for the 800 models.

I test rode the Triumph 900 Rally Pro for an hour and the Norden 901 Expedition for an hour, with some off road. I own a Husky 501 dual sport which is great off road but not great on street. For me I preferred the feel and the grunt and quick shifter and seat height of the TRP over the Expedition. But compared to my 501 they both felt very heavy on the dirt, and would be very concerned about the inevitable drop and pick up. Leaning towards the Husky 701 for the kind of riding I do with challenging off road, but still seriously considering the TRP 900 for touring and very light off road. This video is very light off road so depends on what kind of riding you want to do.

Jeff, the 501 is a lot happier in technical stuff than the 701 and a whole lot lighter. If I were starting from scratch, I'd have the 501 plus 900 Rally Pro. My mate is taking his KTM 500 across the Pyrenees Trans Euro Trail, largely dirt and despite being similar levels of riding skill, in tough stuff, he's waiting for me, which never happens if I'm on my FE350. I wouldn't swap out a 501 for a 701. I'll swap with you though! My 2016 701 is battle scarred but has been on various trips, from Arctic Europe to the Moroccan Sahara and it is a brilliant all rounder but not stand out at anything save fast gravel. On fast gravel, she is perfect. Single track, too heavy and a bit throttle happy but I can get through everything I've pointed the big girl at. I'm not talented but I am fairly experienced. On the road, with an adventure tower, surprisingly well mannered up to about 70mph but I needed to balance the wheels with some chunky wheel weights.

@@TheIdlesurfer yeah tough decision since so far my wife won't allow me to have 2 bikes 😦, but I am still considering the TRP and maybe 701 or 890. Have you ridden a KTM 890 or 890 R off road? I may test ride one soon, but again seems it will be too heavy for technical dirt.

  • @TheIdlesurfer

@@jeffk528 I have taken an 890 out on stock tyres in slippery mud and my bum was squeaking. The 701 is, IMHO, way better in slimy, hilly conditions than the 890 but I run my 701 on Michelin Trackers and tyres are crucial. The 701 isn't fantastic on snotty, technical stuff but for fast gravel, it's fantastic. If I could only have one bike, it'd be the 701 with an Adventure tower. But I've got the luxury of 3 bikes. 2 x 2016 Husqvarnas, FE350 and 701. The 350 was the adventure mule for Nomad of Holland so it has an adventure tower and soft luggage racks, and a Seat Concepts seat. Up to about 65mph on the GPS it is not bad on the road, even for a good few miles. It'd be a tough call between the FE350 and the 701. The first one to go, and I genuinely love it, would be the Tiger. But I'm really off road biased. I'll sacrifice road manners for dirt playtime. The Tiger is surprisingly good on trails, mine is on Anakee Wilds and so long as I stay off the slimy trails, the Tiger will get through some quite serious terrain, but something that heavy and that expensive with all those lovely but pricey electronics, nope. My Husqvarnas have had the granny beaten out of them for years, they're both battered but I have zero concerns when I go over. Can I respectfully suggest you think about an adventure tower for your 501, a better seat and maybe losing a few teeth on the rear sprocket? I did that on my FE350 and it is a serviceable road bike and fantastic fun in the dirt.

@@jeffk528 just a second thought. There isn't much between the 890 and the TRP. You'd have 2 very similar bikes. It is always a trade off, road v dirt v technical dirt. The 701 is damned tall. I'm 183cm/6 ft tall, I find the 701 very tall. Just on the cusp of being too tall.

I'm only in the research phase right now. How feasible is this bike for someone just starting out but is a larger guy (I'm 6'0" / 260 lbs.)? Or should I stick with something like a cb500x, possibly with upgraded suspension, to learn on? Would really prefer to not have to deal with upgrading (selling/buying another bike) after attaining enough skill. But I'm willing to do it the right way too. This class of bike seems to retain value pretty well.

I'm 6'1", 250lbs. I have a 900 RP, so obviously biased, but I think it would be do-able if you are the type of person that could put it in Rain mode and leave it there. Rain mode reduces power to ~45hp IIRC. I will warn you that if you have it in Sport mode and roll on the throttle hard in 1st and sometimes 2nd without leaning over the tank, the front wheel IS coming up. So keep it in Rain until you're comfortable.

If you want to learn off road riding the right move is to get a dual sport and learn on it until you're comfortable. They're lighter, cheaper, and you don't care as much about dropping them. Plus, when you upgrade you'll REALLY appreciate the difference in comfort on the highway. These bikes retain their value pretty well. I wouldn't hesitate to start on 300L rally or something knowing I could sell it later on. If you're dead set on an ADV bike then the 500X, Versys 300, or KTM 390 is a good place to start. This bike is maybe manageable but you don't want to be learning on and dropping a bike that costs this much. Wait until you're ready to treat her right ;)

I think you'd be fine on the road.. the power delivery on the mid-triple is smooth and manageable. The downsides are top-heavy weight which can be a bear at low speed (like paddling around a parking lot), and the fact that used parts are less than plentiful, so most damage will require new part$$$. As for off-road... NO.... you'll be happier learning on a smaller dual sport. Common sense and self-control go a long way. PS. Everyone on the road is trying to kill you... ride accordingly.
