"10yrs into a mind warp" is the best explanation I've heard to date. When I quit social media back in 2011, people acted as if I was a sociopath. Then I forced myself back on in 2017 bc I started a new business that struggled to take off. I was told by everyone around me that I couldn't be successful without multiple social platforms. I tried but ultimately failed bc I wasn't willing to play the social media game-actively posting & engaging with followers you how to convert to customers. When you run a sales biz without a brick & mortar store, the verdict has long been out = social media is a requirement, whether you like it or not 🤷🏼‍♀️

yup. i hated when answering machines came out back in the day- suddenly, you KNEW that THEY knew who called and you were then ~obligated~ to call back. then cordless phones, and you couldn't claim you were out in the yard and missed the call. then it was caller ID, and if you didn't answer the caller would think you saw who it was and ignored them. cell phones? horrendous- you could never just go away by yourself and feel free from answering to anyone. this is so bad now, so many people got so butthurt about unanswered calls, that it has become almost RUDE to actually CALL anyone- the protocol is to use your ~phone~ to TEXT the people you feel like talking to. and facebook? once, way back when it first started, i made a FAKE account using all FAKE info to talk to my adult foster kid. facebook started bombarding me with emails, asking if i knew -this- person. i had to ponder the vaguely familiar names they gave me- holy crap, i went to high school with that guy THIRTY YEARS AGO. soooo creepy, i deleted the account almost immediately but the emails kept coming, kept getting more obscurely, accurately stalker-ish. they came for literally YEARS, probably still come to that email account that i ended up abandoning to make it stop. years ago already, my kid showed me how you can see a photo of a crowd on facebook, hover over the faces, and google puts a name to the faces. i was nsver more creeped out! actually, yes i was. the first time i 'google earth'ed my house and saw my car and my kid's car in our driveway. and the first time a friend said "watch this", hit gps on his phone, and google zoomed in to the room in my house where we were. and then he walked around the house with the google dot following us from room to room. na, this tech is the panopticon. and people are too enticed by shiny objects to care.

Its difficult if you're goal is to convince them that they're wrong. I don't think the point is to gain an advantage so you can change someones mind (aka manipulate them), but rather to gain understanding of why they have that perspective. The flat earth example is on the fringe, but most political topics are not on the fringe, yet folks struggle to conceive how someone could have a different perspective than themselves.

There's a way to deal with social media. I don't have Facebook, Twitter, or any of the others. I do use email and messaging to stay in contact with my friends and share photos, many of my friends disagree with my political views but I still care for them very much. I watch many of documentaries about history and prehistory on KZread, even after years of studying history, to understand what people have done to join together in the past and what people have done to destroy each other's lives in the past. This gives me a very broad viewpoint of how everything works. One of the things I used to teach the lecturers I trained and who went out and presented Technical Training to other people is that they weren't teaching a subject, they were teaching people. Having taught all over the United States and in several other countries, from Germany to the Far East, I found that all people have some basic things in common but that any attempt to change human nature is absolutely fruitless. Invading a country to change its culture and make it our friend can't possibly work, It's against human nature. I've never seen how you could make friends with people by shooting at them. I watch several different news shows and read articles from various newspapers to compare what they say and try to figure out what the facts are. NPR does the best job in this country. I read the BBC headlines every morning to find out what's happening in the world that news organizations in this country are not reporting. I really want to know how the world wags and what the United States' position is in the world and what it should be. I've been a staunch conservative all my life and I'm 72 years old. The conservative I was when I was 21 and a life member of the NRA is no longer what a conservative is by today's use of the term. I'm against most everything the NRA is doing. I believe in serious background checks before buying a firearm of any kind, a registration of all the firearms in the United States in an easily searchable database, and that all firearms owners should have a license to own a firearm and on the back of the license a list of the firearms they have proved they can use safely. How could you possibly have a well regulated militia without that information and the check on people's abilities? To the people that are worried about the Second Amendment, I say the government already knows what firearms you've purchased and what ammunition you've purchased registering your firearms won't make make any difference about you being able to hide them from the government. Please note, you can't bring small firearms to a fight against armed helicopters, fighter planes, or tanks. That idea has been lost in the past. The wild west as we used to see it in movies never existed. It was a difficult, nasty time with little justice. After two tours in Vietnam, I know what it is like to be shot at and to see someone else shot. I've stood shoulder-to-shoulder with a man that got sprayed in the chest with shrapnel from a mortar and all that happened to me was a shower of gravel. I came through because I stayed alert, knew what was going on, and was lucky many times. It used to give me a survival guilt complex but I no longer feel guilty that I was lucky and survived. What we did in Vietnam was wrong but I'm proud that I served my country, saved many lives, and stopped several war crimes. It's time the government stayed out of people's personal lives, taxed religious organizations because they are like other organizations and the Constitution states that the government and religion should stay separate. Not taxing religious organizations is it against what is stated in the Constitution. What our government is supposed to be doing is providing us a safe place to live, with good infrastructure, and making us a solid place in the world. By a solid place in the world, I don't mean the attitude that we own the world and should tell everybody else what to do. We should pull together for what we, as a people, need and additionally what the world, as a larger group of people, need. That doesn't make me a liberal that makes me a real conservative. PS Being an informed citizen takes hard work and expending time.

Also its staggering how many consp theories are rooted in truth.

I think conservatives don't understand what "Russiagate" actually is. Intelligence agencies around the world have evidence beyond any doubt that Russia did in fact use cyber warfare and bot farms to aid Donald Trump. They did hack the DNC for emails. People in Trump's campaign like Roger Stone were in fact contacted by Russian agents and were tipped off about things like Hillary's email dump. All of these things are provably true. I don't think most liberals believe Trump personally conspired with Putin, but he did seem to know he was being aided by them and essentially welcomed the help, which is in itself unethical and corrupt. It's one of the reasons he has been so lenient and servile towards Russia during the last 4 years.

I have heard these assertions for years and have listened to the evidence for the claims. I just don't see how the evidence is supportive, except in the most superficial, propagandistic manner. Any Russian interference was certainly minor compared to the way the U.S. has interfered for decades in domestic policy of various "sovereign" nations throughout the world. I'm not a conservative and I don't get much information from conservative media. I used to be a nightly Rachel Maddow viewer until I watched the Russiagate accusations collapse. I have learned about the deficiencies of that conspiracy theory through independent journalists and progressive voices such as Aaron Mate, Max Blumenthal, Glenn Greenwald, Kyle Kulinski, Katie Halper, Matt Taibi, and Krystal Ball. Voices independent from corporate executives less interested in reporting facts and more interested in manufacturing consent. I don't like the idea that none of us voted on this. We all voted on it when we used their platform and pressed the "I agree" button when creating our accounts. The great thing is you can vote on it again. I have closed my Facebook account and now only use messenger (that too to mostly keep in touch with close friends and family).

For retention purposes, you'd think FB would stop sending duplicate, incessant notifications. I get the same notification every day and I can't make them stop.

I do not use Facebook, Twitter or any other social media that creates an alternate reality to manipulate you. I like reality much more than social media. I create my really and not social media.

This is the best comment by Andrea Laing not about the internet but about meditation practice. "Attention is the highest currency you have, therefore everybody wants your attention, your friends, television media etc. Including you. including your own ego, wants your own attention, constantly interrupting you from your passion. Therefore you have to bring it back with your meditation and with your breath 100 times a day." :))))) And as Dr. Joe Dispenza says statistically people lose attention 6 times per minute.

I'm still on Facebook but use a couple of tricks to not be controlled by its algorithm. 1. I don't have the app on my phone. Only use it on desktop. Having it on your phone is incredibly distracting aside from pulling you constantly into the feed. 2. On desktop I have my own profile bookmarked. That way I completely avoid the feed. I have notifications setup for people who post interesting stuff so I just check those. This way I control when I use it and what I see.

When I listened to the information that Tristen has just delivered; and after watching the Netflix documentary “Social Dilemma”. Social media reminds me of the “Black Mirror” episode called “Nose Dive” It’s as if we are all living the real life episode, where everyone is judged & rated only for the number of ‘Likes’ they receive from Facebook, Twitter, and any other social media websites. And if you don’t have many ‘Likes’ you are not respected and no one cares how you feel or think, even if you are expressing the truth/facts. If you are uneducated, and cannot determine between true reality/facts, and fiction/fantasy; social media can be very a dangerous place for those individuals.
