Thank you!! I’m a nobody. Just a lowly useless white male with 12th grade and trade school education. I have been saying this for as long as I can remember. The most ignorant thing a person can do is judge people from the past on todays standards. It never ceases to amaze me people do this. It’s a form of self righteousness that can’t be imagined by anyone with common sense. Of course you are going to cringe when you hear about the things people did, you live in the moment. But to persecute them, that’s a level of arrogance I can’t fathom. Unfortunately the people that do this have been given too much credibility and are warping the minds of the youth. It feels like irreparable damage.

  • @amandagirlygirl12

the only ones who don't wanna judge the people of the past by todays standards are the ones who have a vested interest NOW to not be associated with the evils of the past. A (large) minority of whites doesn't wanna say outright "slavery was an evil thing" because they feel connected to the slavers and sometimes admire them, as well for their ungodly slaughter of 30 million Native Americans. Which was a genocide. more than a 100 different cultures and tribes have been eradicated by white Americans. To say: "Oh thats not a bad thing, you have to judge them by their own standard", THATS the real arrogance. Slavery and genocide was and is always an evil thing. ESPECIALLY in the form white Americans did it. And spare me all the "indentured labor" analogies. That's just an evil group's justification for their evil actions.

There is a difference between judging history and understanding it. In order to truly understand, you have to put aside the standards of the world that you live in and instead put yourself in the shoes of people who lived in the past. As hard as it may be, you have to attempt to understand the standards of the past. But instead, many people today are much more focused on simply judging history through the lens of presentism in order to push a narrative. This also leads to an oversimplification of history.

Yet he kept his slaves and annecodatly spoke of how they were better with him than the Deep South. We can talk about how thats gross and how that compromises him as a human while also talking about how is Americas best president and without his influence we wouldn't be the amazing nation we are today. We have to understand though the systemic pressures he lived within, society and systems had it that we had slaves during his time, he had a small part of that system but while being was not as powerful as the system. He advocated for it and failed one of the best politianas ever didn't do it, the system pushed on he and he accepted. We should see these people and question there morality or speak of there compromises the same we should think about ourselves in relation to sweatshops, homelessness, and environmental destruction. We have a hand on the wheel and should be judged, but its all our hands and the systemic powers that guide the ship.

You can say that "that is how it was then" and "that was wrong in the end" without contradicting. The problem I see every so often is WHO is complaining. And the "who" is usually the Elders. Who want "how things were" taken into account. Because if they are not "Back in my day" cant apply to "now".

@@Iansco1 Yes. Problems arise when context isn't taken into consideration. Columbus may have enslaved the Caribs, but it's also worth noting that the Caribs were believed to be warlike cannibals. And human sacrifice was a widespread practice among the Central and South American natives encountered by other explorers. It was an ugly and messy time. But 'presentists' allow their bias to blind them to key historical facts that don't reinforce the 'rightness' of their bias. That's how you end up with dishonest narratives like, "The natives were innocent people living an idyllic life and the evil white men came and destroyed that perfectly harmonious existence forever." It's virtually impossible to study history without rooting for or against certain players. Having biases when studying history isn't a problem as long as you are aware of it, maintain perspective and don't try to excuse bad acts because they were committed by 'your team'. History is a mess of tragedy, atrocity and brutality sprinkled with occasional bright spots of progress and hope.

When I wanted to learn about Julius Ceasar and his rise to power, first thing I did was go and study the entire of Rome history until that point, their culture, their religion, their daily life, their politics. Then studied his life up until his political rise. THAT WAY I COULD UNDERSTAND THE WORLD HE LIVED IN AND HIS STATE OF MIND. Then I was finally ready to study his rise to power. . . . . .but if I'm a presentist, all I have to do is read a quick snippet, then judge the hell out of him, through the lens of my own experience. I too am a history major. As a most of us are. Because our great and grands pass down knowledge. Songs and there meanings. Your history is just that, His-Story. There is no argument from me against that. The issue arises when you try to compare the kinds of slavery. I am a native. And slaves were and still are most common in the world. But not the sick form of slavery that the American Colonizers brought about. Small pox blankets. Slaves even in the scriptures were treated humanly and as human beings. with the option to be set free after a time. Not selling tickets for family gatherings and cookouts with their children to watch brutality, beatings, burnings and dismemberment. And fighting over body parts to take home and display on the mantel . Using black pre-toddlers binding them. And using their cries as alligator bait. (That is where the term comes from). Even to this day by the laws established in this land (NOT THE PAST) descendants of slaves are legally "by law " not considered %100 human. This is the current law. Which makes it STILL legal. No you (if you are a descendant of colonizers-forefathers, as I am under the laws against me given to my forefathers) do not get a pass to make yourselves seem as though you did nothing different. When the law is current. Mr. Maher bends the facts as your forefathers did in their own inimitable ways. Ther are nuances to this. And while you may think you have facts, our greats & grandparents tell us all. And we know truth. My great grands were chattel. And I knew them before they passed. And I tell my children all.

The past? As perpetually validated by EEO-1s, EEO-4s, and countless independent research studies, except for more strategically placed "window dressing" of more token women and minorities in sports and entertainment, absolutely NOTHING has changed. Bill Maher is WRONG. He missed the point; the USA was founded on the statement, "We hold these truths to be self evident that all men are created equal," but at absolutely no point has this "principle" been practiced in the USA. In 1776, elite, well-educated, slave-owning, God-fearing White men began and have always made "the rules" and unilaterally continue to make exceptions to the "rules." If these smart, elite, slave-owning White men truly believed it was "self-evident" that all people, including women, are created equal, they would have said so, but they did not. They knew the meaning and value of words, and they elected to omit a specific timetable to officially establish a so-called "egalitarian" democratic republic from both the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution. The aforementioned is the "truth," and has absolutely nothing to do with playing the race card or the sex card. tripoetry.com/Letters/reynoldsrap-systemic.htm

Times change- morality DOESN'T. This is pathetic & horrible! "Liberal" Bill doesn't even REALIZE he has just used the justification of every slave master & TYRANT in history! OF COURSE people back in the day knew slavery was WRONG! Slaves were people TOO! Violence & cruelty have ALWAYS been WRONG except to the criminals and Bill has taken THEIR SIDE! If Bill ever had claim to being a liberal it DIED with this rant. And the sad thing is, I don't think he knows it.

Maher is in the vote blue no matter who group. Google Marhers interview with Dr. Phil on the subject of Trump. Maher has Trump derangement syndrome. He went on and on about his hate for him. And Dr. Phil was just trying to have a reasonable conversation.

@billted3323 It's not a Democrat and Republican thing. It's society as a whole. He's allowed to be left leaning and for there to be balance, we need both. It's the complete whackjobs that need to be dealt with. What these "progressives" are pushing is just as stupid as what the David Duke crowd is selling. The reasonable left needs to be heard more.
