I only use KZread for two things : searching for tutorials and watching funny videos on the toilet. That's all it should ever be used for : learning and laughing.

I find it so fascinating how the technology landscape has changed in the last few years. A few years ago, people werent aware of the addiction that is associated with social media. But now people are familiar with the idea but just cant avoid the addicition.

This is the best comment by Andrea Laing not about the internet but about meditation practice. "Attention is the highest currency you have, therefore everybody wants your attention, your friends, television media etc. Including you. including your own ego, wants your own attention, constantly interrupting you from your passion. Therefore you have to bring it back with your meditation and with your breath 100 times a day." :))))) And as Dr. Joe Dispenza says statistically people lose attention 6 times per minute.

"We all believe in different realities today because we are all addicted to the media that entertains us while portraying convenient half truths as reality. This is because whether we believe what we see on technological media or not, it entertains us. That is the only purpose it is truly used for, to mine our attention with entertainment. And so, the society where human attention has become a profitable resource is one where the people live in a confused, misinformed, desensitized, and apathetic state of mind. The escape from real life into the endless programmed entertainment is the culture. "

I can agree on some part, but I think we still oversimplify on blaming big tech for all these problems. Every aspect of modern life - be it media, cities, processed food, comfort and what not - it all plays a role. And it all has benefits to it as well...

We were never in control to begin with as free will is an illusion (physical laws, genetics, environment etc). But the interesting thing I find is that once we have a decent understanding of our biology and our brain, we can shape what we want to want, as Yuval has said. We kind of have control in the end? The difficult part is making it there before destroying ourselves and also deciding what we want to want..

If I understand your point correctly, that we can use technology to change our fundamental desires, I wouldn't say that makes our will free. There is still determinism in desiring to change our desires.

Jh5578 Yes I should’ve been explicit. There’s still no free will in the end. I just find it a strange thing though if determinism leads us to the point where we can “decide” what we want to want. That’s why I said “kind of” and the question mark at the end. We’ll have control of our biology but not the physical laws of nature. Ahh, what a beautiful experience life is, especially for the ones who are lucky, able-bodied and do not experience tremendous tragedies. From physical laws to particles to consciousness that is able to understand and feel (emotionally and physically) its environment.

@@jhunt5578 I'd agree with your point of view. It's causality at its work, it's fundamental to reality, our reality, that things cause other things and so on. If that's true, there won't ever be space for free will, only for the illusion. What I ask myself is; what will humanity do when it realizes there is no choice in life? I find it quite troublesome when I think about it personally speaking, and I still don't really know how to cope with it. I fear it would be worse when all of humanity begins to think like that. It's going a bit off-topic, but I suppose you guys heard of the Fermi paradox? I was wondering once that this might be a reason why we haven't found intelligent life outside of our own world, that this realization is a reason why life doesn't go further at a certain point. Ahh, ignorance is bliss sometimes ... Well anyway, that was just a thought, fact is we don't know. Wish you people a good night! 😅

@@sevsev4078 I don't see why having no free will is civilization ending. The illusion is strong enough for me not to care, especially so with compatibilists, plus most people in the world are religious and maintain free will exists because God granted them free will. I don't think the ramifications of lacking free will, will harm the wider public. Only 1/3rd of the people I explain determinism too can even grasp it, perhaps that's due to my lack of articulation tbf.

It's interesting how I see the same thing, we all see it, but I could not disagree more. This is a kind of oversimplification "governed" by technology doesn't' mean anything, it's like saying that feelings are governed by chemicals excluding everything else. Ultimately the kind of effects from our technology we have is a consequence that is based on capitalistic motivations of the private interests and fascist controlling tendencies of every government structure, technology is just a tool as always. This is why the democratisation of technology is so important.
