Ahead of attending U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer's AI Insight Forum alongside Mark Zuckerberg, Elon Musk and Bill Gates, the co-founder & Executive Director of the Center for Humane Technology, Tristan Harris, told CNBC's Tania Bryer backstage at the 2023 CogX Festival about his fears over the "AI arms race" and the need for international regulation.

Because most folks have no awareness of AI, in contrast to those of us who are obsessed with it. I'm 73 years old. I have observed humanity for a lot of years. I have no confidence that humanity with do anything to mitigate what is an existential threat to our existence.
The trouble is that a lot of people high up in the tech world actually want AI to take control of humanity.
As Tristan says in 'The Social Dilemma', if we don't control this, we're toast. This is checkmate on humanity.
