Let me know if you have any questions on the blackening process or anything else. Stay tuned for the full build video coming Feb 25th.

I've never salt blued anything but I have wondered why exactly cant you salt blue the blade after a ferric chloride etch to make it really pop? If it's only 200 or so degrees it shouldn't hurt the HT

@@checoleman8877 Correct, you can certainly hot black a blade with this process. It's under 300 degrees so it wouldn't ruin the temper. The great thing about this process is that you could put a mirror finish on a blade and then turn it black. It would be rust resistant that way. It's not a super durable finish (neither is a mirror finish though) so it wouldn't be used on a real working knife.
I like that your reaction to seeing the parts is the same as ours "whoa, cool!".

Every time it impresses me how the parts look coming out of the salts! Thanks for watching!

Good morning! Caught this video just in time before i head out the door to get to work. This is a technique I have to play around at some point, maybe on one of many builds I need to complete. Bet this weather reminds you of autumn's in Canada, pretty darn close Michigan in October!

Sounds like a way to add a patina. There are many of those on the market. Thanks for watching.
I really love how detailed you are with explaining all the processes. I defiantly watch the whole video too. 🙂 Sometimes 2 or 3 times. I can't wait to try that Ultra-Blak 400. That deep black color is really nice.

Yup....definitely stick with your regular process. I know of no one actually using that product and getting better or even equal results than using ferric.

I think it should be focused on those who haven’t mastered their etching process. It is quite a bit easier and simpler, so that’s good for beginners.

The blackening process seems a lot like hot blueing; what are the advantages, other than safety? Will be interested to follow your experiences with Gator Piss, if only to see that catchy name again.

When people say "hot blueing", sometimes they mean this process, sometimes they mean actual "blue" color you can achieve. They are different chemical salts. This process is much easier to do (and much safer because of the lower temps and its not just molten salt but with water). I've seen others have success with Gator piss but my with a bit lack-luster. I have my coffee etch process down to a very successful and repeatable process which is very durable. Others may not have that process down and the gator piss is certainly an easier process to follow.

it's endlessly funny to me that a product called 'gator piss' is common talk now, i'm sure people who aren't knifemakers would be very confused

I wasn't very impressed with the Gator Piss either and it is significantly more expensive than FC.
@TyrellKnifeworks
Жыл бұрын
I'm not sure its significantly more expensive, but it's certainly focused towards consumers who want an easier etching process. If you have your etching process down and are comfortable with it, maybe it's not as advantageous to use it. That's my thoughts.
Then don't break up the video. I don't have the time or patience to rewatch what I've already seen. I love your work but dam#...

The build video is significantly edited. These weekly videos have a ton more detail because it's focused on knifemakers. The build video has different voice overs and edited shots. Thanks for watching.
