Today we are making pelau with black eyed peas (filmed old years night) to ensure that the New Year brings with it lots of luck including success, wealth and prosperity.
Before eating 12 grapes under the table on Old year’s night was a thing, eating Black eyed Peas was the go to tradition for many-and still is.
‘Eating black-eyed peas for New Year’s has long been a Caribbean, African-American and Southern tradition. It signifies good luck, financial wealth/prosperity’
I know we all could use some luck in 2024 so here’s my simple but very delicious recipe. It has a good balance of meat, rice and veggies. Too much veggies the kids will steer clear, too much rice and the husband will stop eating when the meat is done and the excess rice goes to waste. This balance to satisfy everyone comes from decades of practice in the kitchen.
Keep in mind that it makes a-lot! I’ve have learned to make smaller portions over the years by sheer force.
For those of you who don’t know, Pelau is a savory one-pot Trinidadian favorite. Meat including chicken, beef or pigtails is first browned using “burnt sugar”(little past caramelization point), to which rice, fresh herbs, peas or beans, veggies and coconut milk are added resulting in the most comforting of dishes. A superb marriage of protein, rice and veggies made in heaven.

Good morning. It's such a beautiful dish. Although I'm not familiar, it does look similar to Guyanaese cook up rice. I paused and watched several times not just to grasp the indepth method of your cooking but that there's something in your voice that has always been provocative that would encourage addiction to your channel. Your great knowledge of the foods and ingredients that you are using is admirable. I admired your simplicity, and I wish you and your beautiful family nothing else but success in every way in life. Have a blessed day ❤❤❤❤❤❤✌️🙏👌👍🏽💯🇬🇾💯💯🇬🇾🇬🇾🇬🇾🇬🇾🇬🇾🇬🇾✔️✔️✔️

I love how you go step-by-step and explain everything so well you make me laugh. When you talk about the nutrition value we get it we understand you’re so cute. 🥰👩🏾🦲😍

Interesting information about the differences between cooking in a pressure cooker vs cooking in a regular pot.

I never liked Blackeye Peas growing up so I never cooked it. As usual, you never fail to inspire me to try your recipes and I never fail to produce, successfully....you're that good. I am not sure I will eat it but I will sure make it for my family. Much peace, love and prosperity for 2024.

Happy new year!!
Ria, it looks delicious. I made mine very similar to yours on New Year’s Eve but with chicken breast. It was delicious, I baked turkey breast at the side.of course we had champagne. You’re a great cook, I imagine the taste. Good luck for 2024

Thank you❤️
Happy New Year to you Ria and your family. As a Canadian with Trini roots, I appreciate your recipes. I was wondering if there is anyway to make Pelau without browning/sugar? I know its the colour and caramalization needed. Just need an alternative to not kick off my sweet tooth😂😊.

Thank you! If you eliminate the sugar/browning, it won’t be pelau. Might be pilaf. 😀
Happy New Year to you and your family Ria. As always, excellent prep and instructions. Only problem I have with that pot of food is that it is too little bit🤣🤣🤣🤣. Beef pelau is definitely Old Year's night food tradition. Your cooking is the ONLY reason I will leave Trinidad and move over there. Any property for sale near where you live?🤣🤣🤣🤣

Is it possible to use long grain rice? The one I have isn’t parboiled 😢

You can try. Adjust the liquid/water based on how quickly it cooks.
