Marni Nixon saved West Side Story. Not only did she provide great vocals but she corrected the Puerto Rican accent. Natalie Woods' white privilege terrible Puerto Rican accent would have gotten the picture canceled. Her replacement of Audrey Hepburn's voice (which was interesting) in My Fair Lady added an operatic quality that brought it up another notch and in combination with Hepburn's youth and beauty was fantastic.

Natalie Wood didn’t just get the part because she was a white women. The director thought she was something else but yes she was Russian.the director saw Natalie Wood killer performance live in splendor in the grass and wanted her and forgot about warren Beatty for Tony.Audrey Hepburn and 5 other was consider the role of Maria.audrey turned it down because she got pregnant.Marni nixion and Natalie Wood both didn’t sound Puerto Rican to me at all.they had a problem with marni nixion too who was a white women singing for a white women who’s supposed to be Puerto Rican but wasn’t. Marni Nixon was no actress but did great voice overs,But her voice did not match Natalie and Audrey looks and you can tell it wasn’t Natalie voice so thats what ruined the movie for me,well I didn’t care then. They should’ve left Natalie voice in and let Marni do the high notes because the only problem was the high notes and the accents. They should’ve let Natalie talk in her regular voice because no one wouldn’t really notice and not all Latinas sound the same and not all Latinas were brown. Rita Moreno who played Anita was dubbed by another women because she needed help with the high notes too but Rita was a good singer and Marni nixion had to dubbed Rita voice cause rita and the other women was sick. Rita Moreno bash Marni 1. I think they didn’t hired real Puerto Rican’s because there wasn’t enough popular Puerto Ricans and Rita was the only one that came close and Rita was afraid to take the part of maria, rita was offered to do the musical one but turned it down she didn’t feel like she can do it .Marni was no good actress like both of these beauty’s Audrey and Natalie according to old Hollywood. Marni was an professional singer and serprano and Audrey and Natalie were ok singers and altos who can sing lower songs and both okay dancers, the cast of west side story had months to work on the movie while Natalie Wood had weekends because she was shooting splendor in the grass.natalie Wood did not no her voice was gonna be dubbed until the movie came out and she was piss so at least she wanted do her own singing.Natalie Wood next hit project was Gypsy and she got to sing on her own. The great race movie Natalie Wood did with Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon she got dubbed but her original voice was great.West side story wanted a good/popular/pretty actor who can pull in a lot of money. If Natalie Wood wasn’t in it I don’t think it wouldn’t been popular or the attention or got the praise the original musical did.Y’all can credit Marni nixion without discrediting Natalie Wood she been working hard since she was 4. at the end of the day Elizabeth Taylor was no singer and was considered the best actress.just because actors and actresses couldn’t sing doesn’t make them bad and just because someone a good singer and dancer 💃 doesn’t make them good at acting. Natalie Wood and Elizabeth Taylor, Debbie Reynolds and Julie Andrews was the last good real white actresses. I’m saying this as a black women yes I’m Christian Dean and I’m praising white women instead of bringing them down because I know good white actress’s when i see them.

@@iloveprettygirls9543 I'm confused. So is your conclusion that there should be a white privilege anti racist notice before anyone streams Westside Story.

"white privilege terrible Puerto Rican accent" it didn't seem as though she did the accent very heavily when she sang (when you hear the undubbed tracks) and Marni matched Natalie's spoken accent in the movie. Also, what does the ability to do an accent have to do with privilege? That was worded very strangely...

In "THe SOund of Music" Marni Nixon also dubbed in the Mother Superior (Peggy Wood) singing "CLimb Every Mountain"

Incorrect - it was dubbed by Margery McKay. Woods was an excellent soprano but felt she was too old to sing the song well. Marnie was actually in the movie, though - an extremely rare on-screen performance .

No doubt Marnie Nixon and Julie Andrews could sing much better than Audrey Hepburn but Hepburn was by far the best actor. IMHO.

Marni would have been 18 or 19 - and could have manipulated her voice to sound like a child. That's not uncommon for a late teen or young adult to do a voice over for a child.
