I met Marni in 1996. We were both singing on a cruise ship. Her show was amazing and she still sounded just like she did in those films she dubbed. Also, a very nice lady. I saw her again in a musical in LA called 70 Girls 70, probably about 4 years ago now. Still very good. She has perfect pitch, which means she can pull a note out of thin air...just say "sing a B flat" and she can just find that note. Amazing. And her voice in films speaks --or sings--for itself. Magnificent.

The "I am so happy they didn't dub Julie" comment made me laugh. Julie Andrews and Marni Nixon are two of the greatest singers I've ever heard. I also love Judy Garland and Edith Piaf.

"So Long, Farewell" so lovely it gets an ovation from the crew.

When she sings "So long, farewell" she grins as if it was the easiest thing in the world to sing that high :D

It is also the mechanics of singing. It really helps to get a nice sound in your higher register if you smile as you sing.

Marni Nixon made some of my favorite films what they are. Truly beautiful singing.

What a beautiful voice Marni has. I say has, because even though she is not with us in life, we have the treasure of her recorded voice not only in this wonderful testimony of seeing and listening to the person who sang these songs, but also in all the movies she sang them in. Thank you Marni!

Repeatedly watching this staring at her face and listening to the songs gives me a strange feeling of familiarity and shelter. This hits a nerve somewhere deep down and awkwardly drives me to tears. I like that.

A pure delight. Marni, you are recognised, finally, & loved... forever. What a sweet smile, what a sweet person.

What a great video! Marni is so utterly beautiful - in all ways -in this demo. I am surprised that no Hollywood mogul thought to try her in some starring role. She's lovely, and would have been a heart-throb. Just wonderful!

One of the most radiantly pretty voices out there. She brings such a rich contribution to the films she worked for: West Side Story, The King and I, My Fair Lady. Top notch. I hope she feels appreciated and recognized.

I barely remember meeting Marni when I was a child. My Mom, who grew up with Marni and was BFF's with her all through her school years, took me to the Hollywood premiere of The King and I. After, the sound track was played constantly in our home in Long Beach, CA. Of the dubbing Marni did, I was surprised to learn from this new story of her singing for Natalie Wood in Westside Story, the soundtrack LP of which was actually hand-carried to school by many of my female classmates at Millikan High in Long Beach (1964-1967). Marni, your fabulous platinum voice remains with me!

Marni has a very classical and natural tone to her voice. I think she did a fantastic job in The King and I, My Fair Lady and West Side Story, she gave those songs a very crisp and professional finish. Julie could also do that in her voice which is why Marni probably wasn't needed in the final cut of the Sound of Music. I love them both for their beautiful voices and miss the classic sound that is missed in a lot of Musical Productions nowadays.

I'm Italian and dubbing is really popular in my country. I tell you how it works: each country sends to the Americans 2 or 3 tapes of three different voice actors, auditioning for the part. They compare the auditions with to the original actor and decide which voice is the most similar. So I guess this video was sent to Italy before making the foreign dubbings. I simply love the Italian voice of Julie Andrews, Tina Centi. Julie will always be the best but Tina has a voice which is very alike to Andrews and Nixon. It's a mix between the two of them. She dubbed The Sound of music, Mary Poppins but also My fair Lady.

I actually prefer Tina to Julie, sorry! I grew up with her, yes, but I plainly prefer her timbre. To be honest, when I finally heard Julie's real voice I was almost disappointed.

Marni Nixon was actually in The Sound of Music. She was one of the singing nuns. Director Robert Wise said it was about time people see who had only been heard in so many movies before.

Sweetest performance ever.

Marni was a wonder. Thanks for Marni we had beautiful singing of the classic scores of the films of "The King and I", "West Side Story" and "My Fair Lady". So happy that Marni was able to sing herself as Sister Sophia!

She was a treasure. Such a beautiful voice and seeing her completes the package. Just sorry so many more people never knew her or how she contributed to the musical film industry. Watched West Side Story the other night and was just mesmerized by that voice so much that I had to look her up here. What a treat.

Actually, she did become an actress. Marni was awarded 4 Emmy's for her children's show 'Boomerang' that has been on rerun for 25 years and the show has won 26 overall Emmy's. With that she played Sister Sophia in Sound of Music, those are just two of her acting achievements but the ones I find most recognizable.

"Boomerang" was a local Seattle program. She was living in Seattle at the time, and only returned to NY when she and her husband divorced. She also did local theatre there, and sang with the Seattle Opera.

WOW!!! she is wonderful. give her some credit she can sing.

Marni Nixon had cameo in "My Fair Lady", she is a waiter appear in scene "Get Me To The Chruch On Time"

What a powerhouse. Childhood memories. I will always love this woman. I always suspected that West Side Story was dubbed because if Natalie Wood could sing that good, she would have had recording contracts. Secrecy is tragic for those of US who can sing. Why didn't someone allow her to act. Acting is easier than singing. People go to musicals for the singing and not the acting. Now I will have to get everything this woman sang.

This Bonus feature initially appeared in 2002 DVD Version of "Rodgers and Hammerstein: The Sound of Movies" and later ported over to the 45th Anniversary, as well as the 50th Anniversary on Blu-ray

Singing while accompanying herself. What a talent.

Fantastic. She was so good. Plus the songs, she sang as ghost for others, she was one of the best American singers of her time. And she seemed to be a very decent and wonderful person too. Bless her.

I wish the piano weren't quite so loud so we could hear her lovely voice better! Anyway, this is a real treasure!

When she did the children's program "Boomerang" in Seattle during the 70's Marni would sing at the Seattle Center on "Boomerang Saturdays". It was free, and a treat to hear her sing live.

This is Marni??? Gosh. I´ve only heard her VOICE! (one of my BIG favourites.) Why didn't she become a STAR?? My guess: she was too shy! (and preferred only to be HEARD.) Love you, Marni!

Marni Nixon did make an on screen appearance in "The Sound Of Music". She was Sister Sophia. She also appeared in a chorus role in the film adaptation of "Can Can". She played Eliza Doolittle in a New York City Center revival of "My Fair Lady" in 1964. Most of her career was spent doing live concerts, opera, and occasional Broadway appearances. She was also the voice of Grandma in "Mulan".

finding out 60 yrs later my childhood was a fraud 😪

The reason for filming this was so that the lips could be seen by the people who had to TRANSLATE the songs into Spanish, Italian, French and German, not the singers. You see the lip movements better here than in the movie itself. It's necessary because direct translation doesn't work - you have to come up with something that comes as close to a lip movement match as possible. "Do-Re-Mi" was particularly challenging because "doe" isn't a female deer in other languages, etc. It's a "test" because they didn't know if this would work. Up to that point, film musicals showing in non-English countries would have the dialogue dubbed but when the songs came on it was English audio with subtitles in the language of the country. This is not a screen test for Marni but to see if the foreign dubbing idea would work.

I remember a LONG time ago on a TV talk show (MAY have been Johnny Carson???), she was able to show how she could easily impersonate Jule Andrews' singing, which probably was not too difficult since they had similar type voices. You couldn't tell the difference! It was amazing!

It took me a bit to realize this might be Marni Nixon as we see so little of her but I was thinking..."what a voice, she could have been Maria"...that's when it hit me. Maybe hearing her voice hundreds of times or seeing her as Sister Sophia helped me realize. Such a gifted voice and probably would have been a great leading lady.

Marni Nixon has a wonderful voice, and she really looked like she was enjoying singing the songs in this video.

One has to remember a couple of things. This is a screen test, and the Marni had probably received the music a cpl of days before. That she can sound extremely good (in that type of music) one only hast to listen to the sound tracks of King and I, Westside Story and of course My Fair Lady, where Hepburn and Marni's sung voice were chosen over Julie Andrews (she has never forgiven anyone for that). I agree tho that Andrews has deservedly made this song her own,

Don't forget Julie was also only paid a flat fee for the film. The massive success of the SoM movie made Mary Martin, the original stage SoM Maria who also owned the movie rights, a LOT of money. Julie actually made more from the SoM LP royalties. Show business is often a business first and art doesn't always get its true reward - other than life-long admiration of course :)

Chris Norton life long admiration must feel so great! But won’t pay the rent. I don’t see why she couldn’t have played the role instead of J Andrews! The whole world knows she sounds great but she also looks very pretty and graceful. So why go get another person to play? It’s beyond my understanding.

@@gulmerton2394 Because there are lots of examples of actors being box-office draws on stage, but not on film- Tallulah Bankhead, Ethel Merman, Patti Lupone, Harvey Fierstein etc etc. And there are plenty of actors who are brilliant on stage, but then lose that spark in front of a camera. Plus many stage actors simply don't *want* to go into movies; they're very different ways of working.

I realize that Wikipedia is not always reliable but I suggest that you read the page - nowhere is it stated that Mary Martin owned the fights. Rather, it was proposed that the Von Trapp story be adapted into a stage music starring Mary Martin.

She never got the chance she ever deserved.

No offense I still prefer Julie Andrew’s in the Sound of Music especially her talk sing ability like “I’ve Confidence” but Marni has a beautiful voice too. Both are great singers. Such a pity Andrew lost her. Oval while Marni took a back seat for major films. Kudos to both

She was an "unknown" at the time. The studio needed the box office draw of a big name, which Julie Andrews had by then because of Mary Poppins.

In all the comments so far, one thing seems to have been overlooked: Julie Andrews was not the first choice for Maria. As she herself has told many times, when the film was being cast she had never been seen on the screen in anything. Her first film, "Mary Poppins," hadn't been released yet. Robert Wise, the director of TSOM, heard about Julie and asked Walt Disney to let him and the producer see "Mary Poppins". Disney agreed, and Julie was immediately hired. But until then, quite a few actresses came relatively close to playing the part, including some who didn't sing, like Romy Schneider (who was Austrian like Maria, the right age, incredibly pretty, and had scored a big triumph as the Empress Sissi in a series of films in which she interacted beautifully with children). Marni Nixon was fresh from performing a cinematic miracle for Audrey Hepburn in "My Fair Lady." It's difficult to imagine anybody else being considered for the job of dubbing the songs in TSOM in case a non-singing actresss was cast as Maria. The test seen/heard here probably has more to do with that than with anything else.

Why this is titled "Foreign Dubbing Test" is perplexing...the film was in English, and this is also performed in English. Yet that's what's written on the clapperboard at the start of each segment.

All of the songs? The Lonely Goatherd? Edelweiss?

i do not know if it is just me but i find her voice to be very similar to julie's, so beautiful.

I am wondering if the woman who checks Marni's hair at the start of this clip is Margaret Donovan.

Marni over dubbed Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady & many other film leads. I'd argue that Marni is a more accomplished singer than Julie Andrews. She did make a rare screen appearance in SOM as Sister Sophia.

There's a bit more clarity to Julie's voice. Her voice was capable of more textures and shadings,, and her personality comes through. Listen to her voice-over as Mrs.Whistledown in Bridgerton. Without being seen, she creates a memorable character.

What was a "foreign dubbing" test? Did Marni sing for Julie for any of the Foreign release versions of SOM? I know Marni Nixon has recorded in German and French, so I was just wondering.

Yeah they sound the same and thats why alot of people mistake julie for dubbing in my fair ladys i could have danced, but it was marni.

perhaps it's a bit hard to say that julie has never forgiven anyone for that ^^. She was just not taken because she wasn't known well enough at that time, and in an interview she said that she knows that this was the only reason. She said that the media made such a huge story of it.^^ Anyway, I think Marni and Julie both sound great!

I think this was a reserve track when they thought Julie Andrews couldn't do the movie. So Marni had to learn to sing to Julie's voice.

What in the world are you saying??!! Marni´s voice was never chosen over Julie´s!!! Audrey Hepburn got the part of Eliza Doolittle in the movie of My Fair Lady that Julie created on Broadway, and Marnie happened to dub Audrey, but that doesn´t mean that Marni was chosen over Julie for Pete´s sake! As for King and I and West Side Story, Julie was never considered for nor was she even remotely interesed in the dubbing of those movies so again how could Marnie´s voice be chosen over Julie´s?

I would bet that it is Richard Rodgers playing the piano. The style of playing sounds and the piano arrangement sound very much like him. Also, if you are familiar with the broadway and film sound tracks, compare the arrangement with the fantastic work that Robert Russell Bennett added. Richard Rodgers piano playing and arrangements are very oom-pa-pa in the left hand. Only slight hints of anything else, whereas Russell Bennett's arrangements have such nice counter-melodies and colors other than oom-pa-pa.

Is it possible this is just a regular screen test for the actress for the general film? She is singing songs that are not even sung by Maria, and Marni did eventually play a nun in the final film.

How come she sounds like the real thing? 🤔

Yes, Patricia Neway created the role of Mother Superior/Abbess in the original 1959 Broadway production.

Believe me. As a non-English speaker, I find Julie Andrews' accent most clear to hear. Marni sounds great too~

Could anyone please help me and tell me what foreign dubbing is? For different countries, it's clear. But Julie talked and sung in English, so why did they need another English Version?

Amazing voice! At first I thought she was Julie Andrews :P but I don't understand what was the purpose of these "tests"; were they a guide (like a demo) for the foreign voice actors to sing?

@@Curi0u50ne Of course Julie Andrews recorded her own songs. Julie Andrews is a singer. These recording were exactly what Gonzalo said they were -- guide vocals for actors dubbing the film in languages other than English. Marni Nixon did them because they would have had to pay Andrews a much higher fee to do this. Also, Nixon was very probably a lot more readily available for this sort of thing than Andrews would have been. To suggest that Andrews was dubbed in the film is absurd and ridiculous.

Because Julie is a musical actress, if anyone portrayed Maria Von Tropp, Marni would dubbed in film.
