She had a talent, not an amazing talent.. for one she was no Julie Andrews. @@YouSimon1000 The song as conducted by Georgie Stoll for Meet Me in St. Louis has a very complex, evocative arrangement by Conrad Salinger featuring harmonized choruses, wordless vocals, and short highlights or flourishes from a wide range of orchestral instruments. When the song was recorded on the set of Meet Me in St Louis, it was done in a single shot. (That's from wiki, and there are numerous other sources online stating much the same.) The young seem to be threatened by 'old school' entertainment, which of course was superior for the simple fact that the stage was smaller. But it's a bit extreme, and lamentable, to read of someone taking the low road, like an ostrich, bleating out "no it wasn't" before burying their head in the sand.

It’s a masterpiece.. Look how she goes from being the outsider, not cared about and looked over - till she conquers the whole scene and ends up conducting. From being ignored to being Top of the world. In one song. In one brillant Song and equally brillant direction by Minnelli. You cannot tire of this. Her vocal performance is an explosion of richness, warmth, layeres and timing. You cannot help wish that they had stayed put and made more movies. The Pirate is also a gem, by the way!

I've read that Judy Garland loved hanging around beautiful women because she thought that it would rub off on her somehow (even though she herself was already gorgeous). Instead of being catty she embraced them. I say this because she does a double take towards the extra in the light purple dress at 1:56 , who is very pretty, as if she wasn't expecting to see her there. I can just tell in her eyes from that point on how much she was enjoying being part of the "beautiful girls" because of the way she was treated off screen by people who never recognized her own stunning looks. In fact, its said that she married Minelli because of how beautiful he made her look and feel during the filming of Meet Me in St. Louis. It's very cute but very sad at the same time.

He was truly gifted, and in a big way. The kaleidoscopic color and the composition in every scene in this movie is breathtaking. She's wearing dark clothing (except her collar, which frames her face) and no hat, while everyone around her has a hat (even the men) and are wearing bright, colorful clothing. In spite of his being gay, he had to be in love with her to call so much attention to her in a role that, at the beginning, was not considered a lead.

(Chorus 1) [PASSENGERS] Clang, clang, clang went the trolley Ding, ding, ding went the bell Zing, zing, zing went my heartstrings As we started for Huntington Dell Chug, chug, chug went the motor Bump, bump, bump went the brakes Thump, thump, thump went my heartstrings As we glided by Huntington Lake The day was bright, the air was sweet The smell of honeysuckle charmed me off my feet I had to sing but couldn't squeak In fact, I felt so good I couldn't even speak Buzz, buzz, buzz went the buzzer Time for all to disembark Time to fall went my heartstrings As we got off at Huntington Park As we got off at Huntington Park (Verse) [ESTHER] With my high-starched collar and my high-topped shoes And my hair piled high upon my head I went to lose a jolly Hour on the trolley And lost my heart instead With his light brown derby and his light green tie He was quite the handsomest of men I started to yen So I counted to ten Then I counted to ten again (Chorus 2) [ESTHER] Clang, clang, clang went the trolley Ding, ding, ding went the bell Zing, zing, zing went my heartstrings From the moment I saw him, I fell Chug, chug, chug went the motor Bump, bump, bump went the brake Thump, thump, thump went my heartstrings When he smiled, I could feel the car shake [PASSENGERS] Clang! Clang! Clang! [ESTHER] He tipped his hat and took a seat He said he hoped he hadn't stepped upon my feet He asked my name, I held my breath I couldn't speak because he scared me half to death [CONDUCTOR] Hiya, Johnny! [ESTHER] Chug, chug, chug went the motor Pop, pop, pop went the wheels Stop, stop, stop went my heartstrings As he started to go Then I started to know How it feels When the universe reels [PASSENGERS] The day was bright, the air was sweet The smell of honeysuckle charmed you off your feet You tried to sing but couldn't squeak In fact, you loved him so you couldn't even speak [ESTHER] Buzz, buzz, buzz went the buzzer Pop, pop, pop went the wheels Stop, stop, stop went my heartstrings As he started to leave I took hold of his sleeve With my hand And as if it were planned He stayed on with me and It was grand Just to stand With his hand Holding mine To the end of the line

This movie was made when WWII was raging and the outcome was unknown. Based on a series of magazine short stories that became a book recounting the semi-biographical experiences of a turn of the century family in St. Louis, it captures a sense of American wartime nostalgia for a more innocent time. In a sense, though, it looks back in a hopeful desire for a better tomorrow. But, everything about this movie is full of the love of family. It has incredible production values, colorful costuming, joyous music and heart-warming scenes worthy of a Norman Rockwell painting.

I remembered right as this scene started I began tearing up.....in the middle of the song the tape gave out and the picture became static. In a way looking back on it all it was if in that moment she was right beside me...... (I believe I stated this once before so if I already have forgive me…..)
