The most basic, uneducated And uniformed Judy movie musicals list I’ve ever seen. I swear… I’m losing my faith in the Mojo team at this point. This list could’ve been compiled by anyone and that’s not the Mojo style. After the “underrated movie musical numbers” list and this.. I’m really starting to feel ashamed I promote the channels to friends.

I agree. How could a 16-year-old deliver a musical interpretation we'd expect from someone perhaps twice that age? Besides the obvious answer of natural talent, I'd guess that performing with her sisters from before her 3rd birthday had given her experience and the chance to absorb a lot of know-how by observation - something gifted children are uncannily good at. Recommendation: Check out her performances from the ill-fated Judy Garland Show that aired on CBS for a single season ending in 1964. The show had its problems (hardly her doing, in my view), but it has some amazing musical performances, both solo and in collaboration with other great singers.

@@Mezzotenor , Judy herself wondered why she was able to have all her natural musical skills to arranger and vocal couch Rodger Edens . She was so very gifted as a very young child and knew all the technical skills and knowledge of someone in their 30's! She thought maybe she must have been reincarnated. She said how else would I have known all of this when I was singing at 6 years old? I've never believed in reincarnation etc but this truly makes sense with Judy and all of her enormous natural talent and gifts. Later while she was doing concerts in the 50s and 60s , she said that every time she gives a concert she dies a little. I never understood this remark until just recently. In each of her concerts, she always gave absolutely everything that she had in her being, soul - living each word of every song she sang. She also did the same thing whenever she acted in her movies. This explains why she was so very weary after each concert and in her movies. No one ever gave nearly as much as Judy gave to the movies and concerts. This is mainly why she aged so badly-Lorna luft has quoted that from 1950 to 1969 she performed in over 1200 concerts. Everyone quickly says it was because of the drugs. However, the drugs were the only way that she was able to fullfil these inhumane obligations. This poor lady singing Non-Stop from 1950 -1969 was completely wore out! Judy has said that she gave her blood when she sings. 🤔😓 Carol Burnett who occasionally knew Judy was asked by a biographer what she thought of Judy. Carol (who had always been a very big fan) knew the whole story of Judy . She said to the man "bless her heart".😓😇

She was so much more than that and Judy never wanted to be looked at as a tragic figure. She always wanted to be remembered as someone who brought a lot of joy to people. That's what her legacy should be.

Thank you. I know. It frustrates me as well. Her life was not a tragedy. It was much more. She had a great life. People are just reading footnotes and deciding that she was raped everyday and forced fed pills and tortured. That wasn't her life. That's why Liza Minelli refuses to talk about her life that way. She lived an extraordinary life and she LIVED.

It is so disrespectful to Judy and her legacy. I ended up blocking some idiot for arguing with me over a comment I made which said that while I don’t condone what happened to her, people need to stop boycotting the Wizard of Oz or constantly bring up her tragic life because that’s not what Judy wanted her legacy to be. Then this clown went on this whole stupid ass tirade about how the movie killed her and a bunch of stupidness about had she seen the future she would’ve chosen anonymity (just a bunch of mumble jumble bullshit). I can’t stand people like that, yes Judy was a victim of the studio system, but her tragedy is not her legacy.

people think first of the tragedy bc she is so relatable as a performer. they feel her pain and joy first but it is her unequalled greatness that leads to both the talent seeming too natural not to be what she the person is feeling and that makes you experience a vast range of emotions through her performing magic. imagine a world where she didn’t she didn’t stun us with all these performances? what a dreary,empty place that would be.

@@RandyWilsonESQ I don't think you understand what I'm saying. I'm talking about people who constantly talk about how tragic her life was but not talk about anything else about her. Every single time this woman's name is brought up, someone always has to bring up how tragic her life was and how they feel bad for her. And while I think it's great when somebody has sympathy for her, to make that ALL we talk about and not bring up anything else I find to be very disrespectful. Because Judy Garland was so much more than that, She was so much more than just a tragic Hollywood story. To make that all we talk about and nothing else does so much harm to her legacy as it makes people forget what made her so special to begin with. Not only that, it goes against her own wishes. Judy herself didn’t want to be remembered or represented as a tragedy (nobody does for that matter). There are all these articles, KZread videos, TikTok videos talking about “The tragic life of Judy Garland”. It’s ridiculous that so much of my generation can name all the stuff that supposedly happened to her on set of The Wizard of Oz (much of which are inaccurate) but not name any of her work besides The Wizard of Oz and that says a lot about what her legacy is becoming. I know you were not trying to be rude with what you were saying and I’m not trying to be rude with what I’m saying. But I don’t think you understand the point of my comment. I’m calling out the people who constantly make her tragedy all we talk about and nothing else.

Judy was a true superstar, it's such a shame that Hollywood dealt her such a dodgy, tragic hand. Her gorgeous rendition of "Over the Rainbow" never fails to bring a tear to my eye! 🌈😢

I'm a 76 y/o hetero dude, who loves the music of the great Judy Garland. While both she & daughter Liza are Gay icons, I'' ll also add that both are favorites among the rest of us--------yours truly, included. MY all-time favorite ? Easy : " The Man that Got Away " , from " A Star is Born " . Judy was all of 32 y/o, when she filmed the song in one take. ---------As for Liza ? it's a dead heat, between " The Man I love ", & " New York, New York " ; both, from the film of the same title, are just unforgettable. ------Here's to you Judy & Liza ! ------------------MJL

They knew better than to do it then; it's just that the bottom dollar was the big ticket, no matter how they treated the kids. She was, unfortunately expendable, but at the same time the meal ticket for so many. What a sad place to be in. Use her up until there's nothing left and milk it for every penny there is. What happens after that isn't our business. We made our millions and she's gone.

Even with all the laws now look how much abuse still happens. So many Disney, Nick, and other child stars who still wind up with horrible lives. Some will always rise, some will fall. For every Gary Coleman and Dana Plato there will Ron Howard and Kurt Russell! For every Bella Thorne, you will have a Zendaya for a more recent example.

One of my favorites is "Be a Clown" that she sung with Gene Kelly in the movie "The Pirate" (1948).

Shop Around The Corner (1940) starred Jimmy Stewart and Margaret Sullivan. Sullivan would get an Oscar nomination for her performance. Shop Around The Corner would also become the Broadway musical She Loves Me. The most recent revival featured Zachary Levi, Linda Benanti, and Jane Krakowski.

I think Judy‘s performance in the Wizard of Oz will be number one to us.

In fact, Judy asked the lyricist to change one line to make it more heartwarming for the character (and Judy) to sing to little Margaret O'Brian. The original line that was replaced had been a rather depressing statement.

Judy was my idol when I was a kid. I was obsessed with "The Wizard of Oz" and "Over the Rainbow" was the first full song I ever learned to sing. It's still my signature song. I wish Judy had had a happier life. Thanks for this awesome list.

I’m so happy to see “Get Happy” on this list I choreographed my first dance to this song and it’s in Broadway tap style since that’s where my dance ability is strongest I always told myself and my fellow dancers to “do it for Judy!”- that’s now my life mantra

I loved that movie. One of my favorite Judy films. She's wonderful in it. Love her dancing with Fred Allaire. Great songs by Irving Berlin. Favorites: A Couple of Swells and Easter Parade.

She has a rough life. But very talented woman.

Honestly I’ve no idea which number I love the most….love them all. But I think The Boy Next Door/ Have yourself a Merry Little Christmas. She was both absolutely stunning and her voice was like melted chocolate.

I will always remember Judy Garland as one of the best vocalist in the world !!! She brought happiness to millions of fans & she didn't know how deeply loved she was to all who enjoyed her talents. I have lots of her movies & I smile every time I see her because she had a beautiful voice. God bless you Judy, we miss you!!!

When I was five years old, I was Dorothy for Halloween. But when I had classmates and their parents ask me who I was going to dress up as, I answered “Judy Garland!”

After You've Gone, from "For Me and My Gal" showcases Judy's absolute brilliance as an actress. The Man Who Got Away, from "A Star is Born" is thrilling! So many more that were not mentioned, but you can't go wrong with nearly any song Judy sang.

"But Not for Me" from Girl Crazy- it's exquisite. "Friendly Star" from Summerstock. "Better Luck Next Time" from Easter Parade, and the little remembered "It's Love I'm After" from Pigskin Parade (she's so young and already so incredible). Also, absolutely staggering is a song that wasn't used in For Me and My Gal, called "Three Cheers for the Yanks". It shows off Judy's range, rhythm and diction. She was an unparalled singer. Gorgeous voice. Beautiful person inside and out.

The greatest singer ever. My dad introduced me to her. I love musicals more than anything. I loved her and Micky Rooney were singing together. She lived her life as an entertainer. She was a mess but people didn’t know what to do back then. My favorite is The Christmas Song. Margaret broke my heart. But anything she sang made me love her more.

Her charm and delight in "For Me and My Gal", her electricity in "Get Happy", her sheer guts and pain in "The Man That Got Away"...that's the Judy I love to watch.

Whether it's her superior talent or the deplorable abuse she endured, when I think of show business, Judy Garland comes to mind. She deserved so much better and was taken way too soon but her legacy and impact will out live us all. 🐦🌈🎙🎶💖🙏

As a serious Garland fan of nearly fifty years, I had a few quibbles. First, "You Made me Love You", from Garland's first feature, "Broadway Melody of 1938", is much more touching, and historically important than "Listen, Darling's" "Zing!" and, frankly, should've taken its place. Also, "After You've Gone", and "But Not For Me" should've topped out "Embraceable You", as both are significantly more important in her classic film moments. Lastly, the Oscar-winning "The Atchitson, Topeka and the Santa Fe" should've topped out "I Don't Care", as it' one of single greatest musical numbers ever filmed, and is far more powerful, visually and musically. Honorable mentions should've included Garland's haunting "Look for the Silver Lining", an easy bookend to "Over the Rainbow."

I agree with you totally! As a child that is when I first saw Judy Garland and watched her "you made me Love you" and instantly I was an absolute fan! This is a song that made Judy Garland a well known and beloved up and coming Star! This appearance and song is what put her on the map -not only as a movie star but also the beginning of a major recording star! How in the world could they have not included this unless they have never seen this. This song was also very popular and the record was a huge hit !!!🤔

I would've figured Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas would be higher on the list. There's lots of great songs from her out there, she was amazing!

You can blame Jack Warner for that. By the time the film went into general release, it had been hacked to death on Jack Warner's orders so that local movie theaters could make more money with more showings of the film. The general release version ended up leaving vital scenes out of the film, causing it to be hard to follow by audiences. Those that were lucky enough to see the road show release got to see the film as it should have been seen. Anyway, the truncated version was what the Academy judged her performance on, and there was also a lot of Hollywood prejudice against her because of her inability to cope with the constant pushing of MGM during her final years with the studio. While Grace Kelly's performance was good in "The Country Girl", it certainly was not Oscar-worthy.

I wrote a book for Middle Grade kids. Its title" Beyond the Rainbow is an homage to Judy.

I Love the Sepia tone at the beginning of the Wizard of Oz. It really lends itself to the dramatic, bold and beautiful colors in the Land of Oz.

For all of my Gilmore Girls fans...A Star was Born with Judy Garland is the same one Lorelei was watching when Like and her broke up after her mother Emily's meddling in her daughter's love life. The scene plays out as Lorelei sitting in her living room sulking in the couch starring at the screen holding back her tears. Meanwhile, back at Luke's Diner Emily Gilmore pays Luke a visit. Afterwards, Luke walks over to Lorelei's house and they embrace in the passionate kiss we've been waiting for.

Proud to be in the state she was born, Minnesota. Judy was a brilliant actress, loved all the movies she was in. Yes, Over the Rainbow 🌈 will always be most remembered song ever.

Garland is a legend. Her films were fantastic. "Over the Rainbow" was saved by uncredited producer on Oz, Arthur Freed, who went on to help Garland's career with MGM as well as one of the only people in her life that wanted to help her with her addictions. It was because of Oz's success that Freed got his own unit and went on to produce some of the greatest musicals ever made, An American in Paris, Singin' in the Rain, Showboat, Gigi, if it was an MGM musical, Freed was most likely involved somehow.

The Trolley Song is my favorite!!! ❤️❤️❤️ They definitely dont make them like they use too. Not only could Judy sing, she was a heck of an actress too! 👍

Her mother was also to blame. She made Judy take uppers just to give energetic performances and sleeping pills so she would sleep at night.

My all time favorite. She was pure magic. 💗

Another performance that should have been considered was Judy's appearance in Broadway Melody of 1938. Judy plays a girl whose mother is trying to get her into a producer's next big show. Obviously she's got the talent. But Judy's big number is at her home where she is writing a fan letter to her favorite actor Clark Gable. She sings an original intro that leads into the classic song You Made Me Love You. This moment was also featured in the first That's Entertainment movie and was a highlight of that film. In BM38 Judy even got to do a short dance number with Buddy Ebsen in the big show finale. They almost worked together again in The Wizard of Oz with Ebsen as the Tin Man, but he had a bad reaction to the tin man makeup and had to be replaced by Jack Haley.

I never knew Over the Rainbow was almost cut from the film, it’s such a good song!! It’s also cool to me how she still made a good appearance in the movie even though she got treated LIKE HEEEELLL while filming.

I still love her. A different and unique voice. Her last performance of Over the Rainbow was not the smoothest but it was the best because it was at the end of her career and it had the most passion ever. I still cry.

I always forget how incomparable she was! And I have a soft spot for We're a Couple of Swells.

My favorite is 'Someone at Last' from 'A Star is Born' - not because of the song as much as the setup and the concept - Judy describes the epic, elaborate, multi-million-dollar movie number to her husband, and just acts the whole thing out by herself in their living room. When she died there were tornadoes all over KS. One hit the small town where several of my relatives. It went down their street. Took out all the pine trees along the road next to my grandparents’ & aunt & uncle’s houses. It moved some things around but no houses were destroyed. I don’t think much damage was done anywhere in KS. It was like she was saying goodbye. ❤❤❤❤ Someone said stop talking about her tragic life. She became a star which she wanted. Her kids adored her! How can that be tragic?!?!

There really are two 'Judies': movie Judy and the concert Judy - a self she created with the brilliant help of Kay Thompson the cabaret legend. Concert Judy perfected all the heightened drama and personal tics, hand gestures, the feet wide apart stance, the 'sweep away arm' and even the 'hair grab'. But most importantly she brought the intensely personal and unique voice of 'concert judy'. Judy made Kay Liza's godmother.

Judy is forever loved and always missed! Another Great job MsMojo...Thanks!
