I think an issue that Star Trek runs into a lot is that it established so many modern sci fi tropes and storylines but a lot of them have been done better since then, which isn’t Star Treks fault, but if you grew up watching Star Trek or are just a huge fan it can be hard to accept that some people might not think that it’s the best version of whatever story it’s telling

Even this idea isn't really new. I think the end would be close enough to compare to the end of A New York Yankee. Waking up centuries after your family has died.

Pretty much. It's the 'Lord of the Rings' problem.

@@Ungantor Hardly. The Lord of the Rings hasn't really been done better. And I'm in my twenties. Fantasy hasn't really ever been a massively popular genre. At least not in the movies/TV. It didn't receive nearly the amount of popularity as sci-fi did with the casual audiences. While it has had significant influences over the decades, I can't really think of many examples of fantasy that do it better than the LOTR does. Even something like GOT is pretty much incomparable, doesn't really cover the same ideals, and is far more dark fantasy and focused on politics than LOTR was. Most attempts at fantasy are just simplistic action adventures. I think Starwars is a far better example. I'm one of very few people who enjoys the Prequel trilogy more than the OT. Like sure. The OT is technically better as an overall product. But it's honestly quite generic, and overshadowed by many sci-fi stories that took inspiration from it. While the Prequel trilogy has some awful scenes and dialogue. The worldbuilding and story is far more unique and fresh in comparison and so is more enjoyable if you watch a lot of sci-fi and don't have OT love goggles on. It's not something like Citizen Kane that is so far removed from modern filmmaking that it can be fully appreciated as unique and enjoyable despite having such influence on the film industry.

You say that, but I never grew up watching it. Yet I have pretty strong opinions about certain episode, and think TNG is all-round a fantastic show! I only binged it all less than 5 years ago
When they said the fly episode of breaking bad was the worst I instantly understood how the trek nerds felt last week lol

The fly episode blows hard
Speaking from the heart, every time I open my KZread and see that The VodGoblin has brought to light another delightful pearl (however slimy) of our two Best Bois chatting/whinging about nonsense, it just bring so much joy. Thank you.
Begun the Star Trek Wars have
A note on Breaking Bad: Rian Johnson (yes that one) directed the lowest rated episode (Fly) and the highest rated (Ozymandias).
I was looking for this clip. Thanks :)
Silly thing is, the culture shock of it all is even covered in the episode! He won't let go of the fact he was on the Enterprise for nearly 40 years! Then he just plays the flute and it's okay upon returning.
Thing is I didn't go looking for it so I've basically heard whinging about star trek from them two alone
God, Ozymandias and Felina were insane episodes.
They did it better in Deep space 9 with O'Brien.

poor O'Brien he exists just for the universe to shit on
Ah man set yourself up here for some salt gobbo haha
Clearly everyone is missing a key concept about 'the inner light' which is it isn't 'In the pale moonlight'.
The Star Trek rants were streaming gold :')
oh god, I wrote a nice comment then got to the bit where tom talks about the end, the end of that episode was amazing, the captain keeping it together but is visible shaken by his ordeal. I'm sorry Tom, you are very wrong >
taste is subjective. and tom has subjectively shit taste :P
> He comes back after having lived like 40 years and had kids and he just plays his flute and seems fine! > It would take me YEARS to get over that It really pains me that they just don't get it. You don't seem to understand Jean Luc Picards character and UNFORTUNATELY, that seems to be a common misunderstanding. He is a f*cking captain of a starship! He is responsible for over 1000 lives on board the ship! His whole character is about burying his feelings and sacrifice. He literally has intense PTSD and is suffering BUT he absolutely refuses to show any weakness so that he can instill absolute confidence in his crew. He respects them so much, that he sacrifices his own person (romantically, psychologically, socially) You say "Oh, it looks like he's fine and it didnt even effect him". THAT WAS THE POINT! In front of his crew, he is a rock, a pillar of confidence and a foundation of authority. But when he is alone, he suffers major PTSD. I'm sorry, but this bothers me so much because the new Picard series completely got this wrong too. Why can no one seem to understand and see the hidden pain inside Picard; the sacrifices he has made his whole life to put up the face of respect and authority. The value he places on his crew and his INTENSE sense of responsibility. It's not cause he saw his mother hanged herself when he was 6yo, its cause he was a F*CKING STARSHIP CAPTAIN FOR 25 YEARS.

@@kingkuma4112 I think that's the beauty of Star Trek episodes tho. Each episode approachs telling a story in different ways and allows people to like some more than others! Some are more action packed, some are more scientific, some are more dramatic, some are more mystery, some are fun and whacky. You don't have to love (or even like) every episode! But don't dislike something for the wrong reasons. Maybe if someone never understood Picards actual character, it might change their perspective to know what TNG actually intended, rather than the mistake many make when thinking about his role
