There's a novel out there that does the "vampire weaknesses get bigger as they age" thing -- Sunshine, by Robin McKinley (it's good, do recommend). Those vampires stop being able to handle moonlight after a while (reflected sunlight), and there's some incredibly ancient vampires that can't go outside at all, because even starlight is too much for them to handle (stars are just very distant suns).

For the threshold rule, the Dresden Files book series has some of their idea. The more the place is considered a home (long connection, family) the stronger the barrier. Strong thresholds can act as walls, but also weaken magical creatures that push their way in

it also weakens Dresden's magic if he enters uninvited too if i'm not mistaken

I like how Dresden Files does Thresholds. Magical creatures without an invitation leave their power at the door, and they lose power in proportion to how much of a home it is.

1:35 - Tom & Ben _absolutely_ need to watch *_Let The Right One In_* because that film's threshold rule is LITERALLY one of the best scenes.

2:00 Oh that's how crossing thresholds works for vampires in my d&d game! They can go in anywhere, but if it's somebody's home when they go in they lose their invulnerabilities/resistances and a couple of their abilities

The most monstrous vampires I've read are 13 Bullets, really interesting powers and weaknesses. Stronger over time but also more reliant on blood - eventually can't get out of the coffin when they wake unless someone is feeding them. So any vampire that lives a while must have thralls, preferably human ones that will, if needed, feed their own blood to the vampire.

I really like the idea that vampires COULD croas a threshold without being invited, they're just really polite

I think that's how Vampire: The Masquerade handles it. It's a cultural thing for some vampire clans (the Tzimisce IIRC), but it's not an innate trait of being a vampire.

I remember a story in Bruce Coville's Book of Monsters called Vampire for Hire. It had a fun twist on the threshold weakness. In it the vampire tricks a child into bringing a book into his house and it is heavily implied that there is a piece of the vampire body hidden inside the book, thus allowing him to enter the house as well.

the threshold idea had some interesting play in this IF where you had to kill a vampire in a mcdonalds, since it's a public place but pirvately owned, making him be deemed unwelcome by the staff gets him railgunned out the door.

"I am legend" is a unique book about vampires, and it is very different from film. Basically, "Vampires" are zombies who caught a special virus which turns blood into oxygen, and the only reason why some of them suffer from stereotypical vampire weaknesses (like crosses or stakes) is because they literally dug themselves out of their graves and the first thing their family did is trying to kill them with an aspen stake

Now hear me out: Hollywood vampires heal instataneously. Which means their biology returns to the state it was at the time they turned. But memory is also a biology of neural connections. So vampires cannot make NEW memories. Any new experience is instantaneously forgotten as their neural connection reverts back to the moment they were turned. They are mentally forzen in a repeating state like a NPC in a old RPG.

@@MrLego3160 Yep. Instantaneous reset to the moment of their turning means they can't even move a milimeter from where they were. So a more believable superpower is to take 24 hours to heal any physical wounds and reset everything, which is starting to sound like Groundhog day.
