Trek Top Fuel Review - 2020 Bible of Bike Tests

Спорт

Trek’s new Top Fuel proves that XC bikes don’t have to be scary. It’s fast but versatile and, if XC course design continues to evolve, it’s also future-proof.

The Super Caliber is an all race bike that is still a hard tail that adds comfort but is wicked fast. The Top Fuel is a full suspension race bike that has a lot more give and all day marathon comfort. But its not a trail mountain bike. Thats where the EX line comes in and other bikes of that nature. You really have to be honest with yourself on where you live and what you need with not putting over kill on a bike you need to ride in your area. Where I live we have no mountains or rolling hills. We build roller coasters of trails in the woods where a hard tail is just fine or an xc full suspension bike is enough. I see guys with a 120 plus rear travel and 140 fork bobbing like a turtle on the trails because of a cool video that they watched on U tube. lol my 2 cents.

Well done on being one of the few reviews on the net about this bike which considered its design intent and likely market (recovering xc riders etc". Super refreshing to hear what it does well and not so well for that intended style of riding vs similar bikes. Its been quite hard to find an informed review where evry bike regardless needs longer travel, wider bars bigger tyres etc to make it more like a dh bike. Sometime's just reviewing a bike about how it suits its intended purpose/ terrain is what folks are actually after. Nice one.

that was a good review. I am not sure what that guy meant by "lurchy" but it was nice to hear some negative comments on the review. by the way, that terrain where you are test riding is fantastic! great choice

I demo this bike a few months ago and really surprise me. Coming from a yt jeffsy was very pleasant to feel the same security going downhill and uphill was so easy to pedal and handle it. The Mexican version I demo(3k for a demo bike) was a combination of cheap components with the top carbon fiber frame. Nx eagle, deore brakes, fox evol rear suspension and rockshok revelation fork. Weights about 27 pounds. And was very fun riding it. I'm already saving money 🤑

Enjoyed this review. Thanks for posting. I can add that Trek have made this bike a joy to ride and I was convinced to buy one, though I went lower spec so I could upgrade the cranks, brakes and shifter to my preference. There are a few “buggy” fit and finish issues not mentioned in the review. The paint inside the main shock linkage is terrible. Thin to non existent in places. The rubber down tube frame protector is coming free and the exposed glue is already a dirt magnet. And while I like the Rockshox duel lockout, it makes for a mess of cables in the front of the bars, contrasting the otherwise tidy and near invisible cable routing.

@ I had a 2014 hardtail Superfly AL with the G2 geometry and upgraded to this. I was waiting on an SC Blur, but they are back ordered to forever so the local shop convinced me to try it. Long story short: I love it. It's the first full suspension I've owned (ridden a bunch of them, but usually rented and shop set up), and it took a bit to dial in. I neg'd the stem and set the sag to about 27%, and now it screams. I was about to remove the dropper post, but it actually is a lot of fun to have for more technical sections, and because it has more travel than a typical XC bike I am finding new lines that this things just eats up. It's not necessarily a plush bike, but I wanted something I could really push and race if I wanted to, so I really like the efficiency that it retains and the lockout. I hated the idea of the knock block, but I've put about 200 miles on it on varying trails and it is a non-issue. In short: all gas, no breaks: go for it.

I think many people ride a HT because it's cheap, not because they are racers. And for many people their Roadbike it's their main bike, and they are very expensive too... You can have an 8K fancy Roadbike and a nice HT for 2K. Having two fancy bikes and keeping them always updated it's a bit too much for many people...

i bought the top fuel over the trance 29 because its climbs so much better, the trance gets floppy on steep stuff. i will say the trances rear suspension feel plusher, tho i love the twist loc of the top fuel.

Just as a side note, Tim, Giant actually puts the Trance firmly into the “Trail” category, so they can’t actually be truly compared. Granted, the travel is comparable, but it’s mostly down the the limitations of the Giant frame design, which in turn, limits the 29” Trance’s travel.

Every one keeps praising these super steep seat tubes but I find I use my hamstrings to propel the bike a lot less because of it. I still pull but I feel it's more just to get my pedal back up to to use my quads and I get burnt out quicker especially on bigger bikes

@@mkavanaugh5019 there was no top fuel available to test ride, I bought a Ripley frame and built custom. Went blue in Size LG, Fox factory, Xt brakes and drivetrain, WAO carbon wheels, 27lbs w/ XT trail pedals. The bike is fast and climbs well in open or medium setting because of DW Link, just floats over high speed downhill sections, pushes you to go fast in the downhill sections..
