What a tremendous film. Charles Laughton always guaranteed a fabulous production and this one is without exception. My two favourites being Mutiny on the Bounty and The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

He would be, but at this point he was still trying to be a leading man, and not really making it. Technically the hero of this movie, but look who the title character is, and to say he steals every scene he is doesn't work, since they all belong to him to start with. Laughton is a rare case of a true character actor who could also sell tickets. Scott's great era came in the 50's and early 60's, when he's matured as an actor, and could dominate all the B-westerns he was in. As long as Joel McCrea wasn't there.

I must say, out of all the portrayals of Captain Kidd I've seen, Laughton's was probably the most realistic of all them, this being because they really got into character back then, so much you'd sworn they walked right out of the Golden Age Of Piracy!

Not really - Kidd was Scottish, fae Dundee, whilst Laughton (who I adore as an actor) sounds mare like a pearly king.

@@anthonycox3923 Possibly, but I think Laughton was trying to sound somewhat Scottish in this film, he did roll his "r"s at times which is distinctive of the Scottish brogue. While I'm uncertain about how Kidd would've actually sounded, I do know accents in England at the time varied, just like how, for instance, Bonnie Prince Charlie was born to a Scottish dynasty but didn't have a Scottish accent, he sounded like a high society English aristocrat. Back to Captain Kidd, he was in the employ of the English crown and I do believe those who had an audience with the King would try to sound proper, if there was any hint of Scots in his accent it was probably very slight.

Just a small point - tower bridge wasn't built until the late 1900's but is in the shot of the Tower of London

A lot of details which are unlikely for seamanship. You can't provoke the gaff coming down so easy as shown at 39:46. Every sailor doing the observation on deck during his watch will recognize very little variations. Next point is that the gaff halyard needs to lay on a slip knot to pull it free. Next critical point is that the sailor on watch will recognize halyards hanging over the fixed railing of the ships stern. Next point is that a sailor on watch will be alarmed if a spar or a boom comes down on deck, because while coming down the gaff boom will cause a lot of noise and will be slowed down by the rest of the rig on it's way falling towards the deck. There might be a second or two to get aware of the failing gaff, because it doesn't come down straight in a split second if it'll be high enough like shown at the rig's position at 38:54.

Probably the one downside of this is the absence of queues which most men wore their hair in back then. The fancier sea captains would have their hair neat and tidy, tied back in a braid whereas lesser sailors' hair would be long but unkempt, greasy and matted.
