Long time ago I got back to the carpark after a 4 hour walk (2 in, 2 out). Was unloading and realised I'd lost my SLR camera. I remember I'd put it down on a cairn near the summit. I made the journey back past lots of walkers coming down. Happily, my camera was sitting where I'd left it and many must have wandered past it. I was stuffed after that double walk ! If it was a hat, it might have stayed there :)

I know the feeling man. I lost my old Akubra that had been round most of Australia a couple times. Wasnt until i did a deep dive into the memory bank i work out i left it sitting in a shelf in the service station next to the west gate bridge when trying to make what ironically turned out to be the worst coffee i had ever had

Here's my theory (and I practice what I preach) at this juncture get yourself three bucket hats of different color schemes, I have a woodland camo, tiger stripe and black, wear them at different times, that way one lost only takes up 1/3 of my concern:) Cheers.

Rob...I know the feeling....I had a blue floppy "Stussy" hat I got from Bali about 1996...I have had that hat on ALL the hikes/tramps I have ever been on....The last I remember or could find evidence (photos) when I had it last was on a weekend trip to Mt Bogong back in 2019........I have looked hours at home and even on a trip earlier this year I looked on The Long Spur where I may have left for a break" i had.....but to no avail did I find it!! I’ve got a favourite camping hat too. I’ve got a big head, 59cm I think. Buying a bucket hat is incredibly hard. Too tight and I get headaches. One day years ago I was at GAZMAN and they had XL hats. I tried on heaps. There were some that even though all listed as the same size were actually bigger. I bought three I think. Still got two. They are pretty daggy so only come out on camping trips. Good luck Rob. Finding the gold was fun though. I see your Subaru is still going. Great car. I had a red one years ago. The gearbox had issues. I’d still have it if it wasn’t so expensive to fix.

@@Rob.Parsons Great! Neither do most Tasmanians (nevermind Australians), which is a bit sad for the rainforests. But basically (I'll give you the general gist): The Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area (TWWHA) classifies with 7/10 UNESCO criteria, which is the highest in the world (along with Tai Shan). In 2014, the government requested its delisting (luckily that got rejected, right? Yes, it did). The Tarkine (where you explore) has the same qualifications as the TWWHA and has been recommended for World Heritage or at least national park status (it almost got there too). It was placed on the future national park register, but got removed when a new government wanted to make more forestry and mining jobs (sounds fine if it's sustainable). Instead, the Tarkine became future potential production forest (now production in April 2020), and mining leases have been handed out to companies (including one owned by the Chinese government) to extract minerals (see the Savage River Mine). The Tarkine is Australia's largest temperate rainforest (the 4th largest on Earth, and 4th oldest) with many endangered species. Now forestry employs 500 people, which isn't as much as the government hoped, and the value of native forest isn't as good as plantation -- which is why fire is used to clear the rainforests and replace them with monoculture. Forestry Tasmania (rebranded as Sustainable Timber Tasmania) mostly exports pulp to Asia and has a deficit. It needs Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification in order to compete with sustainable forestry globally, but has failed twice due to clearfelling, burning, and irresponsible behaviour towards endangered species such as the fastest parrot in the world (the swift parrot) or the largest eagle by wingspan (wedge tailed eagle). Charities like the Bob Brown Foundation (remember the Franklin River?) have been protesting peacefully and advocating for a just transition of workers to allow for more valuable specialist timber harvesting and the leatherwood honey industry to move in as well. The government refers to them as extremists, and has tried multiple times to pass anti-protest laws that would make it easier to keep them off public land (owned by the people). In the case of the Wielangta Forest case, the government was charged with illegally logging reserves, but reclassified them afterwards and appealed successfully. So, that was that. Heh. Because not many people are aware that this is happening, I was thinking that you could bring it into the bubble for people to care about the well-being of our Tasmanian wilderness. You don't have to get involved, of course, I'm just a bit desperate because of years of repeating forest wars. Another thing I would suggest, is always looking to (drumroll) the Netherlands in terms of economic innovation, because I know Tasmania can learn a lot from them on getting the most out of a poor situation (like agriculture, which is worth twice as much in the Netherlands than all of Australia, using half the resources). Thanks.
