Travelling quickly is a waste of time | Nick Hunt | TEDxYouth@Manchester
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. TEDxYouth@Manchester is proud to present its 6th TEDxYouth conference on Wednesday 5th November 2014. Our event is presented to 450 post 16 students from The Fallibroome Academy in Macclesfield, UK and to over 150 invited students from local schools. We live stream our conference around the world and our theme is ‘Reset’ and the exciting programme includes brilliant speakers, and stunning student performances.
Nick Hunt is the author of Walking the Woods and the Water, an account of a 2,500-mile walk across Europe in the footsteps of Patrick Leigh Fermor. His writing and journalism has appeared in The Guardian, The Economist, New Internationalist, Resurgence, Geographical and other publications. He also works as a storyteller, and co-editor of the Dark Mountain books.

Wonderful !! One of the best ideas shared here !! I have walked for 44 years to plant 20 million trees through India! I completely agree with sir. Love this talk. Thank you TedTalk for sharing such a wonderful walker.

So true. People who claim to "travel" first class and in 4 or 5 star hotels are tourists at best, not travellers.
I like your TED talk. I actually watch more of that. I have never experienced dog attacks in Eastern Europe, but then I actually drive that way instead. I have learned that people enjoy being kind. The walker has homes everywhere. I camped for the last four countries of my walk. Thank you so much for sharing those words of wisdom.

Thank you for sharing your story and inspiring me to go on a journey of my own. In April I will fly into Stockholm, Sweden, and head south from there and back pack tent camp for at least 6 months. I have a general idea of how I'll start off my journey, but I want to leave it open ended, because there might be somewhere I want to go that I didn't have I mind before I start.

Inspiring story indeed! Thanks for sharing your story. I travelled alone in 6 countries in Europe and I can say that was the biggest and happiest experience I ever had. I learned so many things about those country, got more educated than I was before. If only travelling is free I will be gone else where forever 😊

I agree with you Sir that your journey gave you alot of good experiences that one can miss if he travelled on air or on any means faster that treking. The dispointment though they may bring sadness gives you strenth to pull through and finally laugh at it.

What a gentle soul. I agree with your premise. I did not walk but spent at least a year in each place. To understand others you need to see how they live, what they eat, etc. The downtime is for reflection. I am happy you found an audience, Nick. I wonder if you found the need to travel again.

@@teodoraz3742 I worked as a teacher overseas. There are websites you can go to to look for jobs. The school or university will sponsor you for a work visa.

I travelled a lot this year, but because of a bitch called depression, I didn't enjoy it as much as I'd have wished!

I think there's a way to talk about your travel journey without putting down other ways of travel... there is no right way or wrong way to travel.
It is the real traveling! I feel the same about people from East Europę - they are the best!

Yes it s true. I live in Roma . 15 milions tourists every year. The average stay is 3 days or less in a city with 80 museum and 3000 years of history as a cradle of the civilisation. 15 milions of ignorants Who waste time in Roma.
Excellent talk. Wonderful to hear of the beauty and friendship preserved in the people of Eastern Europe. The West has much to learn from them. Sadly they (the West) never got to live the beauty of Orthodox Christian culture, real Christianity. And sadly the days of such hospitality may be numbered with record numbers of muslim/african illegal/economic immigration, Europe's very own 'freedom of speech' and 'human rights' look to be being used against them as a weapon, as they are replaced and conquered by foreign people with a different history, a different culture.

The root of many problems lie in the upsetting of traditional culture. The laissez-faire attitude of western parents... the immoral practises condoned under the moniker of "liberty" and "freedom"... it is not the way of the ancestors, not the way forward. On the one hand it seems like progress, on the other western families become colder and stranger. Compare your average western household to the Eastern European or even Iranian household. Which one is likelier to invite you as a guest and have you stay for dinner?

I thought the stereotype was that the black man was the violent one, but then that stereotype changed to the victim of verbal abuse. Just get rid of all prejudices that our modern culture has of other people and travel. There's a TED talk by a man called Bryce Conway where he said he went to developing countries where there was war, crime and poverty bringing no weapons apart from smiling when necessary.
