How adventure makes you smarter, stronger, and attractive: Tyler Tervooren at TEDxConcordiaUPortland

Tyler Tervooren is on a mission to help every person in the world improve their health, work, and adventures by taking smarter risks. He's an independent entrepreneur who has founded 8 businesses, traveled to 25 countries, and ran a marathon on every continent to connect with the the world's greatest risk takers and adventurers and learn their secrets.
His research in psychology and human behavior has lead to insights for harnessing the power of the brain to successfully navigate through high-risk and high-stress situations. After 10 years in the field, Tyler has found that by combining your passion and intuition with proven research and strategy, you can win at almost anything you want to.
In this talk, he explains how adventure makes your brain smarter, your character stronger, and your ideas more attractive. Tyler's resources, risk tests, and adventure strategies are available for free to his community at riskology.co
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Hi Tracy. There is not just one source for that info. I took the death rate in the U.S. as reported by the CDC, the happiness index as reported by Harris Interactive, and the #1 regret from the book, "Top 5 Regrets of The Dying." That's where the figures I stated in the talk come from.

What did I take as a gold nugget here again? Was it about how you explain, by way of the "wall example" that we become smarter by adventure? Or was it that we become stronger by way of a problem being an "eh, could be worse" one. Ah yes, I remember, now. It is the philosophy that you do not care so much what people think at the expense of doing what's important to you. You just don't do that. Thank you.

Ah, yes, and what I learned about the building and bringing about of a team that you mentioned by the explorer of the South Pole. A tip that I've finally found as being directly useful, relevant, and applicable to me and my set up of life where it is a career goal for me to make it to a spot on the College team and to start in a game at the JUCO College level. Selling myself long on interest, dreaming, uniqueness, this kind of goal setting that sets you apart as you mentioned, and so on and so forth. I also like how you talked about how what once is new and scary that you once had to go through, but were maybe forced, then became old and routine after some expansion and taking of courage. Then, the way you described how every time you step forward out of your comfort zone, I could just imagine the circle moving with it as you go and the outer edges always being another place to step and turn into your comfort zone. Thank you for all this as well.

It's a good presentation but running a marathon on every continent and having a penchant for travelling makes you an incredible adventurer? What? I don't buy that. It just means you have the funds to travel to 7 continents. Many, many people would be delighted to do that. I've run 8 marathons in numerous countries, all under 3 hours (that is the hard part). It doesn't make me anything special. I'm not aware that Tyler has any qualifications in either risk or psychology either? I don't see how he can legitimately position himself as either a world-beating adventurer or an expert in risk.
