Traveling to the Country Everyone is Trying to Leave.
Moldova - the least visited and one of the poorest countries in Europe. A country most of us know nothing about. But we wanted to travel here and find out what the real Moldova is like, beyond the continuous negative news headlines in the west. So we booked a last minute flight from London to Romania and then crossed the border in to Moldova, where we travelled on to the capital Chisinau, to explore the country and try to learn more about this little known country on the edge of eastern Europe. Welcome to Moldova! 🇲🇩

Hi people, I am from Moldova and I am glad to read your comments about my country. If you will be able to visit Moldova, try to visit a village and try their food and wine. It is the best what you can eat and drink ever. Also there are some touristic destinations whici you must visit, for exemple Soroca Fort, Orheiul Vechi. Wine Factories, etc. Thanks for emotions.

I am from Poland and when I buy a wine here I buy it mostly from Moldova. I think the relation price/quality is very reasonable, very good. In my opinion the quality alone is also very good. It is much better than the west european wines, especially from the same price range. Except Moldovian wines I like wines from South America - Chile and Argentina.

I'm from UK and spent two memorable weeks in Moldova in 2018 and stayed at a lovely little guest house in Trebuijeni. The weather was baking hot but thankfully the guest house restaurant had air-con! The country may be the poorest in Eastern Europe but the Moldovan people are the most friendly and welcoming. I will always remember you fondly.

We visited Moldova in 2018. To the question ‘why going to Moldova’ and our answer ‘holidays’ both the old Romanian and the young Moldovan border guards reacted the same way - “Holidays!? In Moldova!?” (We went with Moldovan friends). We weren’t in Chişinău, we were in a smaller village. green, like a garden, wonderful people, cool wine tunnels. Not many ‘tourist attractions’, though Orhei Vecci is really worth a visit.

I had a great time in Moldova over 20 years ago having cycled there all the way from England. It took 2 months to get there and I needed a visa for US$30 bought at Sculeni border crossing east of Jasi. I met some great people there and ice-cream vans were everywhere, and water wells in every village, most of them very ornate and with religious symbols as it was the source of life. South-east of Chisinau I encountered a Russian border control which charged $5 for a paper visa to transit the breakaway republic of Trandniestria, and then I was off to Odesa in Ukraine. Moldova was much different back then with no internet or mobile phones.... I just had a page ripped out of an old school atlas for orientation - Great Times 🙂 Thanks for the video, though, it brings back some memories.

I actually travel off the beaten path and went to Moldova and found it interesting, people where for the most part very friendly. Good food and wine. What struck me was the beauty but unkept. Broken walkways graffiti on beautiful buildings and of course the Soviet block apartments. The contrast were so surprising to me luxury automobiles in front of run down buildings. But the people are amazing and as I would struggle to translate was met with smiles and answers in English. It’s well worth the trip. I actually will travel again there.

@beebkapeepka
Жыл бұрын
@@alexandrudodon1 You say it is the poorest country in Europe. I guess it is not always about material things you have and can have but in the soul of the people. As for me, as I come from former Czechoslovakia and experienced Soviet rule, many things are understandable. People were kinder then and more together, thinking about neighbors. Today many people are competing like wild animals. There are too many criminals walking free unpunished that would have been behind bars doing what they do today to their very own citizens. New riches are mostly stolen or acquired by scam. The new system is detrimental to people's soul and compassion. Also, no one believes it if I say this today: there were NO homeless people at all. So I do not see all the best happening in the last 30 years. Hope to travel, may be even to Moldova. Hope the war will not spread, God forbid. Good luck to you and to your country!
I had the opportunity to visit Moldova once, as my wife is Moldovan. During my visit, I couldn't help but notice the abundance of Orange and Moldcell stores. It seemed like there were more of these stores than there were people in the country.

The city did look a bit empty in places and in need of renovation but it's expected after such a long economic struggle, and young people fleeing for jobs elsewhere. Well done you two. xo Suzi

Thank the Romans 2000 years ago for making this country a part of their empire. After it fell the natives maintained their culture and language over the year. Amazing.

Think Roma (as in the Eternal city), Roman, Romanian. There you go, hidden in plain sight.

Romanian is basically latin with some slavic and turkish influence, Rome created this buffer state to divide the slavs, as the Germans did with Austria and Prussia.
People of Moldova endured a lot worse calamities throughout history than not having tourists. Eventually they will weather this one out too.
Great overview. I stayed there for close to seven months in 2010 and I am happy to see some things got renovated in the city centre. Would love to visit again soon.
Forgotten places & spaces..... hidden charms and discoveries, these can be the best experiences....really enjoyable film thanks to you both.
I did not see this coming. Well pickled or fermented watermelon rind is well-known by me (for instance very old recipes in the US etc. exist). The method the seller used to ferment a whole watermelon and durance was very new to me. Thank you for sharing and stay safe, regards from Germany

It's just pickled watermelon in light salt. The rest was bs by seller.

Yes but not as easy as it sounds when doing it for 70days and getting these results
I've seen several videos on Moldova and it was nice to watch another one. It's wonderful to see such happiness from the people despite their country's plight. The fermented watermelon was an interesting highlight, even if it wasn't a cultural food...that guy obviously perfected the process. Thanks for sharing!

pickled green tomatoes and pickled cauliflower are the best if you wonder what's an absolutely 10/10 recipe from that part of the world, it's "ciorba de burta" or tripe soup

Westerners will have to learn how to make preserves shortly--once bananas from Ecuador or raspberries from Spain are no longer flown in at the drop of the hat. The watermelon preserved in that way is called 'wet watermelon' (Romanians make it too, and by the way, the dude selling them is definitely not from Moldova). There's also 'wet apples' although I wouldn't recommend them. They should have also tried fermented eggplants and peppers stuffed with cabbage; fantastic taste and good for your gut!
Thanks for the video. I am going to Moldova next week and found your insights very useful.
Wow ... I enjoyed this video, and seeing the happy couple traveling in Maldova 🙏🏽
When the national and world politics get depressing because of the way the politicians mess things up all the time with no way to change things individually there is no better way to feel better than to watch one of your videos. They bring back so many memories of the travel times my wife and I had in Asia and Europe while in the military. What we loved most was the people and their different customs, etc. What I liked most was the FOOD! I miss being able to travel like that ever again, especially to the places where you two go to countries I wish I had opportunity to visit myself. I always wanted to travel into Russia, Siberian territories and Mongolia. Can only make it in dreams now. It's the people and their cuisine that makes the world interesting and fun the world over. Kaiten sushi I could do every day.
I was in Moldova for 2 days in October during my Eurotrip tour. Stayed in Chisinau. I surprisingly liked it. I got a lot of stares at the airport and immigration officer was like WTH you doing here lolz made me present flight out of the country as proof too. But I hit all the tourist spots in one day and surprisingly enjoyed all of them. I can see why people say it’s boring cause nothing is spectacular about to. But I’m glad I went to where most people won’t. There was this lovely park I really liked and a museum too. The fall trees had just fell it was beautiful out
Thanks Matt and Julia. I am to old to see it happen but I am hoping my children and grandchidren will visit a happy and prosperous in the future. Love you videos
Impressed that you are able to converse so fluently with the locals!
Oh Julia, best laugh of the morning when you asked if Matt would like to go for a poo before stepping on the second set of scales. 🤣👍 But I love that you take the time to interact in the lives of ordinary people and are open to buying local items which is a real contribution, not only to personal finances but shows respect for local customs. I learned a lot about Moldova! Thank you!

Great video, gonna check out more of your channel.

Thank you for the memories! I lived in Chișinău in 2001. I can’t wait to get back for a visit
I have been to Bucharest twice now and wanted to take the night train to Chisinau, but COVID restrictions prevented me from doing so. I have also been to Ukraine twice (Lviv & Kyiv) and I can definitely see bits of both Romania and Ukraine in Chisinau. Great video guys, I enjoyed watching this a great deal.

Considere to take a plane, or at least a sleeping sit. From Bucharest to Chisinau by train you can travel like 8 hours. It is way to much even for a hush romanian stomach.
