This "Country" is the Last Stronghold of the Soviet Union (Transnistria)

Welcome to Transnistria. The breakaway country, recognised internationally as part of Moldova. Often dubbed the last stronghold of the Soviet Union ( USSR ), Transnistria, located between Ukraine & Moldova, is officially a frozen conflict zone and travel here used to be very difficult.
After the breakup of the USSR, a conflict broke out between the new Moldovan state and the mainly Russian speaking majority slavic region of Transnistria ( Pridnestrovie / Приднестровье ). The conflict ended in a peace treaty in 1992 and despite officially being thought of as an autonomous region of Moldova, Transnistria & its people have, for all intents and purposes, been operating as a completely separate state ever since.
This 'country', with its own army, borders, passports, tax and legal system, has fascinated us for years and whilst being in Chisinau, we couldn't resist the opportunity to travel east to its 'capital' Tiraspol. Let's explore Transnistria together!

Thank you: Just an observation to 21:09 "discovered, despite what we'd read, the shelves were actually stocked with food and drink from all over the world, including some of the large Western brands" It is because Transnistria is officially considered part of Moldova, and the Western brands have NOT left Moldova. Also, sanctions to not concern Moldova, only Russia, and even if they had, sanctions NEVER concern food, consumer products and medicine.

That's so odd seeing your home country from this perspective. Seeing streets of Tiraspol from the eyes of the tourists. Same places I used to walk by when living there for a year. Myself being from the northern part of the country, the small town of Camenca. Things that are so normal to you and so new and weird for the foreigners. Thank you for this video, for shading some light upon my home :)

Hello ! May Allah protect and guide you to his light and happiness in this life and the hereafter, God bless, Ameen. Excuse me for giving a little presentation of Islam, because it is very misunderstood nowadays, especially on those « Antichrist's » times, where media and politics are mixed to distort history and truth. Thank you very much for your time. Islam is an arabic word that means the Surrender to the One and Only God, our Creator, Protector, Provider, who gives us life and all that we have, we are safe and sound by his will and grace, we are His and to Him we return, and we have to thank him in this trial life by submitting to him by our free will, or later in the Day of judgment when it's too late to save our own skin. Islam was the original Religion descended to earth from heaven with Adam and Eve (peace and blessing be upon them) in the beginning of humanity. and was passed to people with the succession of the 124 000 prophets and 315 messengers of God to all nations and civilizations since, passing by Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Ismaël, Joseph, Moses, Aaron, Joshua, David, Solomon and Jesus (Peace and blessing be upon them) during the history of mankind, the last replaces and completes the previous, until the succession of the last messenger of God fourteen centuries ago, Muhammad (Peace and blessing be upon him) to complete the noble morals of all mankind, to bring humans and jinns out of darkness into light, and to purify people's religion and belief from corruption and polytheism, and return it to purity and true monotheism, like it was in the times of the prophets (Peace and blessing be upon them). Many Religions that we know nowadays, at their beginning were true and under Islam, initiated by one of the prophets of God, but their original teachings, history and scriptures have been corrupted over time with falsification and polytheism, or lost and replaced with false ones. That's why Islam is the only Religion accepted by God nowadays, which consists in bearing witness that there is no god besides Allah (God in Aramaic, the original language of Jesus and the Gospel), and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger, just like Jesus and Moses and others are His servants and messengers. Never a messenger of God said he was God or literally son of God, it was the people after him who changed the words of God and corrupted the Religion. God is unique and absolute, He does not need to have a family and sons or to associate anyone else with His kingdom, He can simply create whatever He wants, everything belongs to Him, and to Him everything will return. Allah said in Surah Al-Mu’minun : “God has never begotten a son, nor is there any god besides Him. Otherwise, each god would have taken away what it has created, and some of them would have gained supremacy over others. Glory be to God, far beyond what they describe. The Knower of the hidden and the manifest. He is exalted, far above what they associate. (91-92 / Translated by ITANI). Allah means the one and only God, the God of all prophets and creatures, the creator of the universe and mankind, and the Master of the Day of judgment, where our destiny, Hell or Paradise, is decided based on our faith and deeds in this trial life, and above all, Allah's mercy. Allah said in Surah Al-Ikhlas : In the name of God, the Gracious, the Merciful. Say, “He is God, the One. God, the Absolute. He begets not, nor was He begotten. And there is none comparable to Him.” (1-4 / Translated by ITANI). Allah said in Surah An-Nisa : O FOLLOWERS of the Gospel! Do not overstep the bounds [of truth] in your religious beliefs, and do not say of God anything but the truth. The Christ Jesus, son of Mary, was but God's Apostle - [the fulfilment of] His promise which He had conveyed unto Mary - and a soul created by Him. Believe, then, in God and His apostles, and do not say, "[God is] a trinity". Desist [from this assertion] for your own good. God is but One God; utterly remote is He, in His glory, from having a son: unto Him belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is on earth; and none is as worthy of trust as God. Never did the Christ feel too proud to be God's servant, nor do the angels who are near unto Him. And those who feel too proud to serve Him and glory in their arrogance [should know that on Judgment Day] He will gather them all unto Himself: (171-172 / Translated by Muhammad Asad). Allah the Most Merciful said in Surah Ali-Imran : Behold, the only [true] religion in the sight of God is [man's] self-surrender unto Him; and those who were vouchsafed revelation aforetime took, out of mutual jealousy, to divergent views [on this point] only after knowledge [thereof] had come unto them. But as for him who denies the truth of God's messages - behold, God is swift in reckoning! Thus, [O Prophet,] if they argue with thee, say, "I have surrendered my whole being unto God, and [so have] all who follow me!" - and ask those who have been vouchsafed revelation aforetime, as well as all unlettered people, "Have you [too] surrendered yourselves unto Him?" And if they surrender themselves unto Him, they are on the right path; but if they turn away - behold, thy duty is no more than to deliver the message: for God sees all that is in [the hearts of] His creatures. Verily, as for those who deny the truth of God's messages, and slay the prophets against all right, and slay people who enjoin equity - announce unto them a grievous chastisement. It is they whose works shall come to nought both in this world and in the life to come; and they shall have none to succour them. (19-22 / Translated by Muhammad Asad).. God said : Say, “We believe in Allah, and in what was revealed to us, and in what was revealed to Abraham, and Ishmael, and Isaac, and Jacob, and the Patriarchs, and in what was given to Moses and Jesus, and in what was given to the prophets from their Lord. We do not differentiate between any of them. And to Him, we surrender.” (2:136 / Translated by Community) Salam (Peace)

I love Transnistria and have visited several times. It is unfortunate you did not show it in the summer when all the plants are in bloom. I think what is just as important as what you showed is what people do not see. The streets are clean, no graphite, people are so friendly and it is safe for the children to play outside like it used to be in the USA. It is rare to see a policeman and can go 2 weeks without ever seeing one. When you do they are probably directing traffic for an event and not carrying a weapon or dressed like a navy seal. Young people are polite and well behaved and not wearing their pants down halfway to their knees showing their underwear. It is like stepping back into a Norman Rockwell painting but it is real. You can walk anywhere there at any time day or night and be safe. I love your analogy of the ants in the jar. Why are we in the United States constantly at war? We shake the jar.

I wonder if you would ever consider showing a foreigner like me some of these "beautiful and interesting things" outside of Tiraspol that you speak of. And my next trip there is next month :)

hi, guys. thank you so much for the work you are doing, in sharing your experiences places which are not so known or visited in eastern europe. i am originally from Chisinau, and i greatly appreciate it. nevertheless, in the context of current international events, i want to say some things, regarding your words about the soviet family. soviet union expanded so much as result of 2WW not cause the eastern front was fighting together against nazi germany. at least in case of moldova, the territory was taken forcefully from romania. it wasn't at all a democratic choice of the people. and i suppose it was similar in case of other countries/nationalities. and judging by the speed of soviet union fall, everyone was just expecting the moment to declare itself independent, because noone wanted to be in it. individual citizens of the soviet union might have acted like family and lots of the people who lived there and are still alive romanticize the good life they've had back then. but no family member ever goes to another family and kidnaps a member from it. no family ever steals food from other family members and let's them starve. no family member takes another to a concentration camp. and no family member ever tries to erase the history and national identity of another family member. would be good to be aware of such sensitive historical and cultural matters before romanticizing the past. i am sure you didn't mean it in a bad way, and i hope i didn't destroy the good vibes of this comment section. transnistria is such a sensitive topic for moldova's internal affairs (and since we want to integrate in european union, also external affairs), and it was artificially created by kremlin to keep moldova dependent, and to keep it from developing on its own.

Thank you for saying this. It’s the same thing the Kremlin is doing with “Abkhazia” and “South Ossetia” in Georgia, not to mention the invasion of Ukraine. And it’s all because Russia refuses to abandon its chauvinistic mentality and thinks it has the right to rule its former colonies and deprive them of the right to act independently.

Haven't you thought that Russia has the right to defend its borders from NATO encroachments? And does it as sees fit. Many people in different countries regret the collapse of the USSR, there were many good things - education, medicine, work, free housing and, most importantly, peace and security. What did your give identity in Moldova and Georgia ? Puppet government, debt and poverty!

I'm ashamed to say that I'd never heard of Transnistria before watching this great video. I think maybe the news was dominated by the war in Yugoslavia 30 years ago, but even so, I'm shocked I knew nothing about what had happened in there. I absolutely love learning about new places and being educated about modern history is a huge extra. In these days of high tech and instant access to the Internet, it seems incredible that so little is known about this remarkable little country Thanks for a really interesting, entertaining and informative film. First off, I do want to say that I throughly enjoy watching your trips across a parts of the world that I spent a fair amount of time back in the mid-90s and I do understand that you’ve got to censor yourselves on what you say or you won’t be able to continue this videos, but…. As for ‘everyone’ being part of the old SU, the vast, vast majority didn’t want to be together - the majority didn’t have a choice, they were forced to be together. During the Russian Civil war from 1917 to the 1920’s, look at all the ethnicities/regions/countries that tried to go on their own and to be free from Russia - some succeed but many failed. Only Poland, which had to defeat the Soviets at the very gates of Warsaw, the Finns (who had to fight 3! wars against the Soviets) and the Baltics succeeded in the 1920s. Ukraine failed in 1918, Georgia failed, Armenia failed, Turkmenistan failed, Moldavia failed, Caucasus failed, Azerbaijan failed, the list goes on and on. I have little doubt that there are many regions in Russia today, where the people are not ethnic Russian, would leap at the chance to be independent and free. It’s this same ‘nostalgia’, mainly by Russians, for the past that’s causing the war in Ukraine today. I don’t hear anyone in Warsaw or Helsinki or Yerevan saying, man I wish we were still part of Russia/Soviet Union….. Peace.

In fact I have noticed as well that it’s always Russians who feel nostalgic over the ussr which to me seems bizarre (cause as far as I know, well those times weren’t also, let’s say, the most pleasant in Russia from a wellbeing point), - some of the countries oppressed see those times as nothing but oppression and hurtful past.. I'm older so I don't remember all the nostalgic "Kumbaya" from the Soviet days, there were uprisings all through the Soviet era: Poland, Czechoslovakia, Georgia, Hungary, Ukraine, and many others. The Soviet held the lid down. But everyone knew that if ever someone let off, the lid would blow. But people won't live under bayonets and tanks forever. It's sad, but the way we tribal human animals are without a VOLUNTARY focus on a unifying factor like religious faith or some ideology that helps us rise above old tribal struggles keeps us divided and miserable. I don't know if you are worried about upsetting (or putting at risk) Julia's family in Russia, or if you are worried that being straight will damage your ability to travel, or will turn away some of your viewers, or if you are, indeed, siding with Kremlin in its genocidal war against Ukraine and, frankly, against its own people (I hope not). I would love to keep watching your videos, so I would love it if you could clarify this.

From my perspective, the two of you walk a very fine line. Trying to convey the everyday life and goodness of a people and country at odds with their neighbors and other nearby countries. I understand they are on the precipice of war with Moldova and there are significant political tensions between governments as demonstrated particularly at the border posts. I also understand that Transnistria is well equipped militarily and could take Moldova with little resistance. I don't really know what part of that is true but I believe in the right of a country and people to self determination. I honor the right of a Russian to be Russian but when they endeavor to takeover another sovereign nation (or nations) then I stand against them. Russia has left itself without options. It is all or nothing at all. This whole area could soon be at war. Not just Transnistria, Moldova, Ukraine and Russia. “How many wounds have been left behind the crumbling of the Soviet Union ..and how many ethnicities found themselves in foreign countries pitted against each other.” Don’t put everything in the same bucket - I do want to point out that for a lot of those nations it was quite the opposite - the Soviet Union is the reason of many deep wounds left in those nations, and after the break of the Ussr, they did not merge into new countries but came back to being their own countries prior to the occupation. To refer to the oppressed countries of ussr as a big, sharing family is very off. May seem like a minor thing, but something I just wanted to point out.

And there are also many countries within the former ussr that since it’s crumbling have become ‘ethno-states’ for the first time in their history. Many ethnicities that have lived in peace for centuries were forced to move because of the ethnic conflicts that arose 😞 The Armenians of Baku and Azeris of Yerevan are an example of this, as are the ethnic Uzbeks of southern Kyrgyzstan etc ❤️🙏🏼

I really enjoy watching your videos, but I think your "takeaway from Transnistria" is leaving out one important historical aspects. Divide and conquer was the strategy of Russia during the existence of the USSR. It was them who created artificial borders between various national and ethnic groups of people. USSR was one country, but the internal border were not free or easy to cross. And it was not just about drawing borders, another thing was the violent relocation of millions of people. Russia purposefully created future conflicts between other nations decades before the collapse of the USSR. And before anyone tries to blame me - no, I'm not a "Western spy", I come from one of the countries that the USSR had been raping for decades.

USSR has developed every nation within its borders to a highly educated and civilized state (some believe this was an intentional preparation of the future break-up). Had the republics been too russified, they wouldn't have kept their heritage and able to rise as fast as independent nations in just a few years after Aug 1991. The predominant role of the Russian language and culture was directly inherited from the Russian Empire which ruled all these territories (except for those acquired after WWII). And the acquisitions took place when every major democracy of today had been an Empire, too, rejoicing in expansionism, militarism, and colonialism (which were good words back then).

Transnistria is internationally recognised as a part of Moldova but is currently under military occupation by Russia. It is very similar to what Russians did in Abkhazia and South Ossetia, as well as in Crimea in 2014, and recently in Donetsk, Kherson, Luhansk and Zaporizhzhia (all four are part of Ukraine). How can anyone be "fascinated" by Russia's red terror over small countries? The terror that deprives the people and residents of this country of the opportunity for democracy, human rights, freedom and development for decades? Knowing this, it is very inappropriate to claim that Transnistria is the "last stronghold of the Soviet Union". Because it is not by its own will but because of the Russian occupation. Without the Russians, Moldova might already be a member of the EU today.
