TRANSNISTRIA, the Country Still Living in the Soviet Union (Between Moldova & Ukraine)

Welcome to Transnistria, the thin strip of land between Moldova & Ukraine, which roughly 500,000 people call home. It is a self declared, unrecognised country that fought to remain independent from Moldova after the breakup of the Soviet Union. I explore its capital city, Tiraspol, where statues of Lenin can be found amongst its Soviet styled streets.

    A state that is not recognized by others is still a state. I don't see how you can deny that. Its just an unacknowledged state. About the statue, of course there are still many places with Lenin-statues, a statue doesn't make a soviet union (that is its values, its ideology, not the facade). The place looks pretty regular. There are many places in the world that look like that and people, relative modern cars driving around etc. In that sense the footage of the rusty playground is a bit pain full... then again, thanks because it does give an interesting picture. I value the fact that you just walk through town and downtown.

    Very interesting to see Tiraspol 9 years after I was there in 2010. A lot of changes! First, in 2010, border control was still very strict, and we were told we had to leave the country by 9pm or we would be in big trouble. Secondly, we saw almost no cars; the centre has an old soviet 6 lane motorway, but nothing was on it. Third, there were beer vendors everywhere on the streets. Fourth, we saw almost zero young men, but the university was full of young women. We also saw train loads of steel still sitting were it had in 1990, unable to be exported because neither Moldova nor Ukraine would take it. On leaving, we were shaken down for a bribe, but had hidden our money and played dumb long enough that the guards let us go.

    Great video. I've always wanted to visit Transnistria. It has a fascinating and complex history. Soviet architecture interests me too. I think Transnistria is recognised by a few other unrecognised breakaway States, isn't it? Like Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

  • @JasonBillamTravel

    @JasonBillamTravel

    Correct, good knowledge! But of course, those disputed states only choose to recognise Transnistria because they are looking for some kind of acceptance in return. Not a single UN member has given Transnistria an endorsement, which is what really matters.
