Hello Tony, Great video and great advice. I am visiting Lisbon on 10/27 and have the afternoon off. Is it worth the trip to go to Sintra after 12pm. Do you think I have enough time to visit Pena Palace and Castle of the Moors? Can I use Lisbon Card for the train from Lisbon to Sintra? Sorry for so many questions. Thank you so much.

THANK YOU very much for this wonderful video of Sintra!! Question... Is it 1 hour on each attraction (Pena Pl, Moorish Cstl, and the Quinta) enough? I know that it depends on how much time I want to spend on each, but I'm doing a day trip and I don't want to miss any part of the attraction because I spend too much time in one of them. How long did you stay on each attraction? Thanks again

@@PYJacob hi, one hour is absolutely not enough. It's more like two hours, even more in the case of the castle where you have to walk a lot. The Quinta da Regaleira is quite extense, too.

We recently visited Sintra using your tips and managed to skip the Scotturb buses. We went uphill and downhill using Bolt(or was it Uber) from the centre. It was rather cheap at 1.9euro due to promo 😂. Bought the ticket to Pena palace only when we arrived there, as we were early and due to December cold weather , there was no queue. Later we strolled in Sintra town centre.Thank you for the tips! The stroll upward from entrance of Pena Palace is not recommended for those with weak knees, leg problems. Definitely need to use comfortable shoes! Thank you again for the great tips. Lots of love from Malaysia!

Nice video. My wife and I visited Sintra in this past April and the place was jammed with tourists. We stayed at a hotel for two nights and if you are going to visit Sintra in anything but the dead of winter, I recommend spending a couple of nights there. We stayed at the Sintra Nova Hotel and loved it. There are city buses that run up to the Pena Palace, but we took an Uber up there for about 7 Euros. The lines are long, but, the views are really worth it. As the video points out you can then walk down to the Moorish Castle, which is very impressive. After we toured the Moorish Castle, we walked down to the center of town and it's all downhill. Don't try to walk up to the Pena Palace or the Moorish Castle unless you are in pretty good shape and have some very good footwear on. Since we had extra time, we visited The Sintra National Palace downtown, and if you have the time I highly recommend it. We also went to the Quinta da Regaleira and that too is really worth visiting. Again, if you are anywhere near the high season the place will be mobbed.

When we were in Sintra in 2019, we walked from the train up to Quinta da Regaleira. We had been talking about possibly moving from the U.S. to either Spain or Portugal. On our walk up to Quinta, we passed a dilapidated but beautiful old Moorish mansion. We wondered how much we could get it for and invest into renovation. We decided to discuss it when we returned back to the U.S. About a week later, it was all over the news that Madonna had purchased a home in Sintra and wouldn't you know, it was the exact home we had been looking at. When we found out what she paid for it, we were grateful that someone had the "MILLIONS" necessary to renovate it. But from what I hear, she lives in the guest house and nothing has been done to the main house to date. Oh well. If you look at a screen shot of your video at 15:16, you can see the back side of her home on the lower left hand corner.

I went back and forth on Pena Palace first or Quinta de Regaleria. Mainly because we want to see the same 3 sites in your video but also not sure if we need to book tickets in advance during first week of March. What are your thoughts? There are so many tourists around these days, everywhere, that we no longer feel confident recommending arriving without a ticket for the most popular attractions. All the best.

The main information is to use bus 435, but there are too many negative commets about their services. Then I saw this video and your advice to use Uber. This was the best advice ever. Thanks for the advises, we took good use of them! I haven't found hard to walk between the main spots. Metro station - Quinta De Reguilera was about 30 min. Then from there to the Moorish Castle was about an hour (with a 65 years old, not very fit lady) and I would never switch that experience with going up by car. The hiking trail is very unique. Scammer tuk-tuk drivers are trying to scare you that it take 2 hours to go up, but if you are fit, you can do it in 30 mins. Pena Castle is quite close to the Moorish Castle but we finally skipped that one, had a nice view on it from the top and didn't wanted to go inside neither. We arrived lasy around 10:30 to Sintra and left at 17:00 so there is still enough time to visit everything if you come earlier.

Boa noite por todos😁 I am a great fan of Portugal and have been many, many times to the town center of Sintra, and the National Palace of Sintra, as a tour guide with my clients. However I have never been to the Sintra mountain, with the Pena Palace, the Moorish Castle and the beautiful gardens up there. In a few days I will be travelling in a group of four from our Lisbon hotel to Sintra. We will visit a Fado place in the evening, leaving us limited time to stay in Sintra. Would you say it is nonsense to take a taxi from our Avenida Liberdade hotel to Sintra, the top of the mountain, if possible and a train on our return journey to Lisboa? My experience at Rossio station, going to Sintra, was not good. The lines to get tickets or to reload your card were very long as two out of the six ticket machines where out of service and a third was, for some inexplicable reason, only accepting change, no cards or bills. When I finally got to load my card I had just enough change to get to Sintra and back. Someone who worked on the platform told me to take platform three. What he didn’t tell me, and what was not mentioned in the video, was that platform three was also used by another suburban line that stops in Sintra/Meleças which is a small open station in the middle of nowhere.. I waited another half hour in a very cold wind for a train back to Rossio and never got to see Sintra. Please be aware that Rossio station is very busy and very poorly managed. For this reason, be sure to come very early. Also, be aware of the trains final destination so that you don’t end up on the wrong train. Don’t count only on the people that work on the platform to provide adequate information.

Sorry to hear of your experience, we've never had problems with the machines at the station. We check the train schedules before the trip and then confirm the platform number on the screens.

It's hard to compare an individual city with an entire continent. But the centre of Sintra is an heavily visited tourist destination.

First of all thank you so much for the video and warning about the bus, I did have a feeling that it wouldn't be that fun with the bus business. I wonder if it is just worthy taking car for rent for 2 days? I am only not sure of the car can get around there or this is a non emissions zone.

Hello, if you drive a car to Sintra the first thing you'll have to do is to find a place to park it safely - no mean task. You cannot drive up the mountain with a private car. We wouldn't rent a car just for Sintra.

@@ROADTRIPSpainandPortugal I watched your video about 20 mistakes and I realized that renting a car is not such a good idea. We are flying from Málaga to Lisbon only for 2 days, so even though I am trying to win more time avoiding buses and trains, I realized I only would lose it all on parking and stressing out driving. Thank you for amazing tips! You have very impressive channel.

Hello Tony, what do you think about renting a car for a day from Lisbon and going to Pena Palace, then Cabo de Roca and Cascais and returning back to Lisbon? We are not sure if we have parking problem with the car in Sintra.

Hi Halil, the thought of going to Sintra and only visiting Pena Palace sounds so strange to us? Why not visit the other wonderful sites in the city? In any case, with your rented car you would first have to struggle to find a place to park at the base of the mountain in Sintra and then you would have to get an authorized transport to go to Pena Palace. We recommend a full day for Cascais.

We haven't got any experience of leading groups, but are aware of the challenges involved. If you could find a local operator offering the trip for you, it might be a good idea. Otherwise, you can always try it on your own following our advice. Transport in Sintra will be the biggest challenge.

If we buy a ticket at the airport to town center with zap fund, can that card and there are funds still available can that card be used for the train to Sintra. A Sintra tourist guide mentions the following "It’s important to note that if you previously acquired a “Viva Viagem” card to use on the metro or trams, it can only be used for the train if it has no fares left. Your balance has to be zero, otherwise you must buy a new card for the train." So I am confused, do I have to buy another card?

We paid for our train trip to Sintra with zapping credits in a card we had previously used to travel around Lisbon. In actual fact, we paid for the metro ride to Rossio station with zapping credits and then the train to Sintra with zapping credits.

We are planning to pick a rental car up from LIS after spending 3 days in Lisboa. We are going to Sintra staying 2 nights staying at NH Sintra Hotel. Is it possible to drive to the hotel and drop the car then continue our sightseeing by Uber? Some information says we must park outside old town. How do we get to our hotel? Or would you suggest we take the train to Sintra and not pick up the car at LIS until we are finished in Sintra? The rental will be just sitting parked in Sintra. We are looking for the easiest way to plan this, thank you in advance from 4 Canadian Seniors :)

Hi John, please, please, next time give us more time to be able to reply to your questions. We like to rest on Sundays! If you want to travel by train, you need to buy a Bilhete 24h CARRIS/METRO/CP , which is more expensive. We would use zapping credits. Have a nice trip!

Question: I read that Lisboa card covers train tickets to Sintra, do you have any idea how to use the Lisboa card to buy the train ticket to Sintra or just tap the Lisboa card on the entrance like the metro, tram and bus? Lisboa card also provide discounts to the attractions in Sintra, should I buy additional 24hr of Lisboa card to get the discounts in Sintra?
