Here's the best price I can find for Transparent Labs Protein: feastgood.com/recommends/transparent-lab-whey-protein-isolate/ This is an affiliate link. Feel free to use it or don't. There's no extra cost to you. It simply helps me purchase more product to review for the channel. Also, it's important to mention, an affiliate link is NOT a sponsored link. I paid for this product 100% with my own money and reviewed it independently. I have never received any financial compensation from manufacturers for reviews. Companies never know that I'm reviewing their products before a video gets published. It makes no difference to me whether I love or hate the product, I simply tell you my candid opinion. So while I can receive commissions for referring sales to products, if you end up being disappointed with my recommendation and don’t come back to the channel, I lose my audience trust. This is why I always set a very high standard for my review process, and constantly strive to provide the best, most honest, and most helpful information.

I can't justify that cost. I've always done 100-200g whey on top of my meals for almost 2 decades. It's insane how expensive isolate has gotten. I wouldnt be able to afford even 3 scoops a day with my meals. Im currently doing fairlife as the cheapest alternative i've found. May not be grass fed, but it's the most affordable option i've found so far since the whey pandemic about 4$ for 78g of protein. Honestly the increase in prices of whey was the worst part of the whole pandemic. Retailers saw they could gouge prices and still make sales, so they probably won't be returning to lower prices that were affordable. It used to be insane to spend even 10$ a pound for whey isolate. Often times sales would give you 5-7$ a pound of whey. It's ridiculous to see how things have changed. It genuinely saddens me.

Funny you say this. I'm just about to publish a blog on "why protein powder is so expensive now". I got access to historical data from manufacturers, and it's insane how expensive it is now (since covid). Industry experts don't think it's coming down in 2024 either.

Too bad they use "natural flavors" which kinda kills their brand of being "transparent". Sure, "natural flavors" must start with a plant or animal product, but then the chemists can add artificial ingredients from there. "Natural flavors" are thus some of the most non-transparent chemicals out there. I will stick with my Levels grass fed whey concentrate protein as they truly have all natural ingredients even though protein concentrate has a few less grams of protein than an isolate. I'd rather put natural stuff in my body. Thanks for making the video.

Great review. I buy this, Thorne, and Raw Nutrition, whatever I can find cheapest of the 3 when I need some. It’s hard to find a good protein. Those 3 despite the cost do not even compare to others because of all the crap that’s in the others. Biggest issues are fucking seed oils like vegetable, canola, sunflower, etc. Those do not belong anywhere near your diet or a supplement you’re using for recovery. Many brands put shit like fructose corn syrup or sucralose in there, despite that lactose is sugar making it already sweet and there’s really no need. At least with the aforementioned brands it’s stevia. Soy doesn’t belong anywhere in a whey protein powder either. I don’t really care if it tastes bland, so long as it’s clear of all that shit.

  • @feast_good

I'm actually in the process of reviewing Thorne! But ya, I agree. I mention all of the ingredients of each whey protein I test in the article write-up (it would be boring to cover all that stuff in a video), But I don't mind paying slightly more for a product that doesn't use cheap fillers, sweeteners, dyes, oils, etc. And to be fair, Transparent Labs isn't even that expensive. It comes in right around the average cost of whey protein.

  • @feast_good

Some people purposely look for whey proteins that are sweetened with stevia though. I actually just answered a comment on another video that asked my opinion of the best stevia-sweetened protein powders. These people usually find artificial sweeteners upset their stomachs and are looking for something more 'natural'. So there is a use case for using stevia, and Transparent Labs is filling that need. However, if you and others don't like the aftertaste of stevia, then Transparent Labs is definitely not the pick because they only sweeten with stevia. Some whey proteins use a combination of stevia + other artificial sweetener, so the aftertaste is not as strong in those products. If you're interested in those kinds of whey proteins that use a combo of sweetner, then check out Ascent, Optimum Nutrition, or Legion. There are videos of each of them on the channel.

  • @feast_good

Natural flavors” is a term used to describe compounds that enhance the flavors of food or supplements. The original source of a natural flavor must be an animal or plant source, but after that, it’s created in a lab by food chemists called "flavorists". Many labs that create natural flavors don’t disclose everything that goes into them. This is to prevent competitors (or even the brands that buy natural flavors from a lab) from stealing exact formulations and taking them elsewhere.

Tbh I haven't tried NutraBio. Just looked at the product though. There are more thickeners and fillers than I like. It has both xanthum gum and sunflower letchin. One is fine, both are probably unnecessary. I also don't like how there's no fat content transparency on the nutrition label. They don't state how many grams of fat are in the product. It has 25 grams of protein (100 calories), 2 grams of carbs (8 calories). The product is 125 calories, so I'm assuming the remaining 17 calories come from fat (1.8 grams), but the label doesn't show that (I'm looking at the vanilla caramel label). That's not a good look for transparency at all.

We've written about this before on the website, here's a snippet about natural flavors from one of our articles: “Natural flavors” is a term used to describe compounds that enhance the flavors of food or supplements. The original source of a natural flavor must be an animal or plant source, but after that, it’s created in a lab by food chemists called flavorists. Many labs that create natural flavors don’t disclose everything that goes into them. This is to prevent competitors (or even the brands that buy natural flavors from a lab) from stealing exact formulations and taking them elsewhere. Furthermore, companies aren’t required to disclose everything in natural flavors because the FDA doesn’t regulate them. That said, natural flavors are safe for most people, and many protein powders contain them (source: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6062396/).

In that article, I talk about the differences between "non nutritive" and "nutritive" sweeteners and where stevia fits into the mix. Read that portion of the article if you're interested: feastgood.com/best-protein-powder-with-stevia/. Essentially, Stevia is a natural non-nutritive sweetener. There is some processing involved to turn it from a plant to a powder. But it it 100% natural and contains no calories. Sugar, on the other hand, is a nutritive sweetener, which means it contains calories.

The best bet is to go with an unflavored option if you want to avoid "natural flavors". Transparent Labs doesn't have this option, but you could consider Bulk Supplements, which I have a review coming out for in the next couple of weeks.

That's not necessarily a bad thing at all. Are you looking for lower sodium? The French Vanilla flavor has 180mg. Most flavors are around 230mg, which is right around the average sodium per scoop for whey protein (across every brand).

Interesting. I definitely didn't experience that. Not sure if your issue was related to shipping, but they recently opened a second shipping warehouse to increase shipping times, and I think there are some kinks working out the process for that. But when it comes to customer service, I've been very pleased on my end. Hopefully you got your issue resolved!

So here's the thing, I took a sample of the 50 most popular protein powders on the market in December 2022 and found that the average cost of whey protein is $1.34 per serving. Transparent Labs Grass Fed Whey is $2 per serving, so comparatively it's one of the most expensive whey proteins on the market. The thumbnail for this video is "I tried the most expensive protein on the market", which is now incorrect. After publishing this video I found one other protein that's more expensive. But safe to say it's still an expensive whey protein. You can bring the cost down to $1.70 per serving if you use Transparent Labs "Subscribe and Save" feature, but I don't do any of my calculations based on promos or deals. I also want to be clear, I think this protein is 100% worth the extra cost, and it's why I still mention it in a lot in other videos.

@@feast_good you can't do it at serving level, that is not an equal comparison, you need to price it per gram of protein.

  • @feast_good

    @feast_good

@@pearlharbor8065 I understand what you're saying. The easiest way to do this though is based on per serving. It's quick back-of-the-napkin math to create a baseline. This is because 1) the majority of protein servings are between 21-25g. That's the standard range for almost all whey proteins. There aren't very many companies that fall outside this range, at least the ones that I'm reviewing on this channel. Maybe it would make sense to do per gram if we saw wildly different serving sizes, but we just don't see that. 2) even within a single brand there are variations between flavors. So if you really wanted to be specific by using grams you'd have to calculate a per gram cost for EACH flavor for EACH whey protein. Honestly, that is just too much work for something that won't generate significantly different results. If you go ahead and do the calculation based on a per gram per flavor formula, you will come to many of the same conclusions, i.e. that Transparent Labs is still well above the average, and verging on one of the most expensive brands on the market. As of right now, I don't know of any other KZread creator who has gone even as far as I did in trying to calculate some sort of 'average cost' for whey protein. Even if you Google something like "Cheapest Whey Proteins", all websites use a "per serving" formula, not per gram, and no website, tells you the average cost. They just say "this is $0.80 per serving" without giving any reference points whatsoever. So for our purpose, the average is $1.34 per serving. Is it perfect? No. But it allows for quick comparison.

@feast_good I get what you're saying but I work in accounting so numbers matter. Actually, Jeff Cavalier did a video on per gram vs per serving...not that I like to throw his name around a lot but none the less. Also, regarding the "natural flavor" , Transparent Labs told me (for example) the Vanilla is flavored using vanilla beans. Thanks for the quick reply and keep up the good work!
