If you think about it, most of the original G1 cast are repaints of Diaclone toys that overshadowed the originals.

Not exactly. I mean the original Diaclone versions did come out in other color schemes that were never used for Transformers but they never actually repainted the figures for Transformers, they already existed in those color schemes. Optimus Prime for example you can find in a different color pattern that's pretty similar to what would eventually be his SG colors (at least to my color blind eyes) but there's also a version that's already in the more traditional Optimus Prime colors. The only one I'm aware of that is a repaint specifically for Transformers is Ultra Magnus. Convoy, as far as I'm aware, had 2 variants, the red and blue version that would become Optimus Prime, and the blue/purple and black version that is similar but not quite SG colors... and I only know that because someone told me cause for the longest time I thought Optimus' SG colors were based on that Diaclone variant. Anyway Powered Convoy which is what would become Ultra Magnus was original created and pitched as an Upgrade for Optimus Prime. In the Diaclone toy line the cab section was unchanged from original Convoy release. Early trailers for the 86 movie show Ultra Magnus still in his Powered Convoy colors back when the idea was for him to be Optimus Prime in an upgraded armor. His color scheme was changed to the White cab and the more recognized Ultra Magnus we know today when it was decided to make him a separate character. So that color scheme was specifically made for Transformers and was never part of Diaclone. Blue/Purple and Black = Diaclone only Red and Blue = Diaclone and Transformers White = Transformers only Basically Optimus Prime technically isn't a repaint, all they did was change some of the sticker details. The Autobot and Decepticon insignias were made for Transformers and not part of the Diaclone toys. Ultra Magnus is a repaint though. Hasbro has been bringing more of those variants into Transformers though with Powered Convoy's original colors becoming Delta Magnus and being the inspiration for Ultra Magnus' SG colors. The red version of Tracks becoming Road Rage.

@@RialVestro Skywarp, Blitzwing, Devestator, the Insecticons, and the Jumpstarters were all brand new color schemes. I do not believe that the decos used for Sunstreaker, Ironhide, Hoist, and Tracks’ toys were ever part of the original Diaclone line before they were imported as Transformers. I could be wrong on that but I’ve never seen evidence of those colors existing for those toys in Diaclone before 1984.

@@davewire87 Bluestreak as well. While the deco used in the sunbow animation was based on the silver and black variation of the Fairlady Z Diaclone toy, Bluestreak's physical toy used an original all silver deco.

Remember that in Japan "Armada Red Alert" is Ratchet and "Cybertron Red Alert" is First Aid. They look different and are different characters. It's the English translation that made them the same guy.

They have a few traits in common because the initial plan was to make them the same character, but that idea was dropped early enough that Takara could make First Aid his own character. Hasbro, on the other hand, had attachment issues.

It's Takara who made a mess of things because even in the original press release for Galaxy Force it was advertised as a sequel to Super Link, yet for unknown reasons was dropped while Hasbro continued with the original plan for it to be a sequel.

Tbf, it would make sense that ML Ratchet and GF First-Aid would look similar but be different characters as their G1 counterparts are the same way. Aside from Hasbro's push to make it a trilogy, I think trademarks were also a factor for the Western adaptation. I want to say they didn't have First-Aid available at the time but still had Red Alert even though they might have been able to reuse "Autobot Ratchet" due to the Universe 1.0 toy.

I grew up with RID 2001, so they were my introduction to the Combaticon concept. They'll always hold a special place on my heart.

If we're mentioning combiner teams, I feel obligated to mention Dino King. I didn't even know Monstructor existed until 2019

The Beast Wars II Seacons recolor is one of my favorites. I think the white and gold color scheme is awesome.

@@burkeperrotta4495 it's not really "opinion based" it's just not fitting for the topic. I mean "cool color scheme" that was never used again is not much of overshadowing. If you think that it's a cool repaint fine, but it does not overshadow anything, it's just 1 time thing like that green and blue beast hunters Prime. Shattered glass OP on the other hand since than became basically a standard repaint for any Prime figure, if you ever see a new figure of Optimus you know that no matter if it's licensed product, model kit, or even a third-party you'll gonna get out of it 3 more repaints: Ultra Magnus, Nemesis Prime and SG Prime. When charecter becomes a standard now THAT'S OVERSHADOWING, and I think that was the point of the video.

Getting an updated God Neptune would be a dream come true. I got the Gen selects one and it does not want to stand up.

I know everybody’s gonna bring up classics such as RD 2001 Scourge and Sky-Byte. I would say Universe 2003 Reptilian is an absolutely beautiful looking figure in comparison to the original beast wars Transmetal 2 Iguanas

Shadowblade Megatron was a great toy with a fantastic deco, but he doesn’t overshadow the main Megatron. Nightwatch Optimus definitely ended up defining the 07 Leader mold though.

I think tfcc thrustinator would also count. But he is a retool of a retool. So maybe not.

IDW Tailgate and Swerve were conceived as personalities first before they decided which character it should be. They originally wanted Bluestreak and Powerglide but couldn't use them.

Cybertron Galvatron is my favorite repaint. I do not really have the money for repaints, but I just really like that color scheme better than the Megatron figure.

That’s how I feel about G1 cliffjumper.

I will be 100 percent honest. I love the Legacy Laser Prime mold. I hate the Laser prime colour scheme but absolutely love all the repaints. I have the Legacy Scourge, it really pops and love the vibes it gives off. Toxitron is fantastic too. I even like the colours for that Target prime.

I love both the Seacons and God Neptune

8:33 I picked up that toy at a swap meet and the condition of the mint , but not rough.

Keep in mind that I'm color blind as you're reading this and this is just my opinion based on what I can see. Gas Skunk is nearly identical to Stink Bomb except for some added chrome silver parts that were not even painted on the original. He's the least different out of all the TM2 repaints. Sky-Byte and Cybershark to me look like they share the same colors just some of the color placement is different. Night Glider actually looks better to me than Dark Scream cause there's more color variation that I actually see and the repaint is just all one color. I think Slapper is the only one that stands out the most to me cause he's red, red is one of the only colors I can actually see clearly. Scourge the only one who really over shadows the original.

I think 2001 commandos are interesting characters compared to the G1 combatcons mostly because well they’re actually toy accurate the various colors for the G1 team may be interesting, but if you want a toy accuracy, the commandos are the way to go

Raving about Gas Skunk's color scheme being so superior was a joke, right? Because they're essentially the same. I actually prefer Spittor over Slapper, but both are great and in my collection.

As someone who owns the X-9 Ravage, a repaint of it that I always wanted was the Botcon version in white that in fiction was the post Tigerhawk body of Tigatron. I am kinda hoping that they will repaint the WFC Ravage into a homage to that Botcon Tigatron, however I’m not holding my breath.

I kinda liked the Arcee repaint of BW Blackarachnia that they released at that same BotCon... I ended up getting both talking and non-talking versions, and had to take extra steps to cover up the talking version to help stop the battery from running down. Never did open up that Arcee or Tigatron, but I personally liked the looks of the x-9 Ravage myself.

It's a remold, but I always thought 2011 Generations Wheeljack overshadows the Tracks that the mold was made for. The proportions fit Wheeljack better, the small wings looked terrible for Tracks, but were in line with Wheeljack, and the c-clamp attachments were better hidden in vehicle mode and fit Wheeljack's inventor personality with how customizable they were.

I was unaware that Sky-byte was a repaint, I never saw the Original one.

I think Cannonball could work as a repaint of an Armada-styled Red Alert just as well as it would a Cybertron-styled one (as it did originally). It's his paintwork that's iconic more than any of his body details (beyond maybe the toolkit in his legs which could easily be worked into the Armada design). Sure it'll be less 1:1 accurate to the original, but I'm personally less of stickler for that (as is probably evident by this suggestion).

I'm waiting for the new Legacy United Gears to be redecod into Swerve. Also can't wait for Windcharger and Tailgate!

You forget another that fits two categories' you already covered, Shattered Glass Ravage. You see a white Ravage, it's not Glyph it's his Shattered Glass counterpart.

Swerve was also in the revenge of the fallen toyline as a red sideswipe nothing wrong with a little red Corvette.

Ok first off, personal take, I prefer the original Seacons and am sad that the Gen Selects ones are so expensive and hard to find now. Second off, one of my favorite examples of the repaint being better than the original toy is interestingly enough Beast Wars ravage, but not the one most people talk about. Im talking about the Beast Wars Walmart Edition Tripredacus Agent, or Transmetal 2 Ravage. Like Transmetal 2 Cheetor looks cool in the show but the toy itself is HORRENDOUSLY under decoed. No spots, Purple Crome and from an engineering and design standpoint the Transformation is awkward, the beast mode is comically scrunched up with that dumb back arch and the toy version of the robot mode looks nowhere near as clean or as dynamic as the animation. With Ravage I’m able to overlook the sculpt and engineering issues because the black and silver paint with the gold Chrome just looks awesome, with more of the Cyborg elements being painted and visible, and because It’s ravage, I don’t have to transform him all the way so that solves the ugly robot mode and Jank transformation that makes me worry im gonna break him, and instead make him look like he did in the old IDW comic. I love the Cyborg Murder Furry aesthetic they gave him in that, as well as his character arc. Ravage is my favorite transformer and Transmetal 2 Ravage is my favorite Ravage. Here’s hoping we get new figures of Transmetal 2 Cheetor and Ravage soon.

Is Dreadwing even out? Never saw it. I definitely want Machine Wars Starscream , but I am getting worried it ain’t happening as he still isn’t announced.

How did you NOT mention Car Robots Baldigus/Robots in Disguise 2001 Ruination!? It's a repaint of the Combaticons in a much more badass color scheme. Then Hasbro did the snow camo version that just takes a huge 🐳💩 on anything not Baldigus. And then Takara took the already badass UW07 Bruticus and turned him into the even more badass UWEX Baldigus... Also, Laserbeak. Wasn't Buzzsaw the first to release with Soundwave back in the day? Then the cartoon happened and Laserbeak just magically became the de facto Tape Minion *not named Ravage or Ratbat*.

Imo, the blue and pink seacons are better. The white isn't as memorable.
